this is true ~ and mama wasn't a kitten from the outset, either .... yet they are both fine with the chickens - oh and some chickens are savages and swallow a mouse with ease! Having your egg produces be dual/ triple purpose will also help
Yes, I think that you need to get two kittens and let the dogs get acquainted 👍 But keep them out side so they can keep each other company and warm at night 💞 They will do a good job with the mouse problem if they are trained 😞 You can get one from à farmer so make friends with a farmer 👍 God bless the Doss Family Areas and hugs and love 😙
Get two females and get them fixed! Cause believe me if there's a male within 10 miles he will find them then you have a real big problem lol females hunt better than the males plus males spray on everything yuk
agree, over here the local SPCA and the sheriff department's animal shelter always have cats but most folks who have kittens they need to give away take them to the corner feed store to be adopted.
@@13juju...I have 8 too. One is a feral that finally after 7 years has almost become a house cat.He still goes outside to go to the bathroom, but now sleeps on my bed with the other cats. Another 2 are my late mother's cat and her one kitten that we kept. They are all fixed except the feral. But he hasn't ever sprayed in our house, probably because he gets along with my cats and because they are fixed.
It works best with 2 cats. Your acreage needs 2 cats. You will come to love them. In the mean time, build a home for the cats. They need a place in the winter and rain. Look on bulletin boards at church. But I think now that you announced it, you will find them. 🌿💛🌿
You need several cats so they can concentrate different areas of your farm. As others are saying, they need to be spay/neutered so they will also stay on your property
Love the idea of building onto the cabin. It sits up above everything, so youd have a nice view! 2 kitties better than 1. Shelter kitties are good, too! Be sure to insulate soon! Cooler weather is gonna hit before too long!
Adding onto the building is a great idea, maybe even get a larger building and convert into a home. Eddy Family Farm did the same thing until their house was built....and they have four children. Perhaps you can recruit someone to help you finish the roof on the coop. God bless.
You might need 2. Get in touch with Gary at Walker Family Fam, Daniel at Arms Family Fam, Jason at Cog Hill Farm, Kevin at Hidden Heights Farm. They all have barn cats and one of them should be able to help steer you.
I definitely recommend getting 2 cats with the amounts of critters they need to address. Check your local shelters. They fix them and give them all their shots, plus they microchip them. They'll be inexpensive and taken care of. I adore all your goats, but Spruce and Weigi melt my heart and Blue, of course
I had a 2-story barn outbuilding "cabin" built up here, that had a loft big enough for our King size bed, a single bed, a dresser, a mule chest, a night stand, a bedside toilet, room to hang clothes, with a high gambrel roof, and downstairs as a den with computer desk and small kitchen. And I bought a different outbuilding as a "water house" for a large sink, toilet, washer, dryer, and shower. The men who built the cabin did not seal the seams of caulking/sealant, and when we had a rainy season, every seam leaked water, which ran over and down different places, and molded things I had stored around the interior perimeter. We're old, and hadn't the ability or the funds to pursue it, and the builder took weeks to send people out each time, and pretty soon the mildewy smell was more than I could take. The 30+ year old mobile home that was already here was water damaged, which is why we wanted the cabin, but we just ended up with two water damaged places. With Kyle's building skills, and Shanon's ability to help him, y'all could get cabin plans and build one yourselves. Mine cost $12k back in 2009, with a covered front porch. Kyle wouldn't have any height issues, and could put a big king bed in it that would be better for his back. I would recommend a covered back porch, too, not just the front. If you built a water house right next to it, or right behind it, a covered walkway between them would protect you regardless of weather. A mini-split on each level would cover the cabin, and one for the water house would be sufficient. Tall people should not waste their money and time on buildings that are not tall enough for them. You can design and order for bigger doors and higher ceilings, customizing it for your own needs. There might be a barn or cabin builder in your area that you could contract with, and you could finish it out on your own, if you want to. The possibilities are endless. Y'all are young and talented, and I have no doubt you can work it out. As for the chiro doc, go more often to start with, then go regularly about twice a month to keep your progress. Tall people often have back issues. Most of my mom's relatives were tall people, and most had back issues, they called it the Luckey-back, because their last name is Luckey. Taking good care of your back is a must, so you can feel like tending your farm. Wishing y'all all the best ! ❤🙏
My mother converted our six car garage into a stand alone apartment that she rents out. She already converted the main house into three 3 bedroom apartments. (My parents had a lot of foster children). One is rented to my baby brother. She now lives miles away on land up a mountain and now owns five houses that are built up there that they also rent out.
Seeing Bruno in your raised bed reminded me of when our Harley would come out and "help" me in the garden. We always said he was the master gardener. He is no longer with us. Thanks for the happy memories!
My cats love to sleep inside the planters I have hanging onto my porch railings. 😂 Cats are weird about what they sleep on. One also likes to sleep on the cat scratcher pad.
I'm excited about the house plans and getting a couple of barn kittens to take care of those pesky mice ! Wish I could help but I live pretty far away. It would be so much fun to get to do farm life again but I'll just follow you two Shanon and Kyle 😊❤❤. Love to Herc and Bruno , birdarmy and the Sweet goats 😊
Kyle, if there is a dairy farm nearby or you know a dairy farmer ask them, they keep cats because of the mice, and they are always willing to share. And the kittens are already used to life and k own they are supposed to hunt mice.
That is a good idea making the cabin living quarters. My husband and I are selling our home and buying a tiny home. Time to downsize . Have a wonderful evening. God Bless.
I like your idea of building onto the cabin. I like the look of your cabin now, and I can only imagine how pretty it would be with extended living areas.
Thank you for making your mental and physical wellbeing a priority. I didn't ever want to question your priorities but it makes my heart happy to hear/see you .aking your next steps! God Bless
Part of taking care of your animals is taking care of yourself. You gotta keep yourself in good condition so you can get out and take care of them. GOD bless y'all.
Cat rescues are always looking for adopters; you probably want a short haired cat, and may want to have a pair from a litter ~ how you get them to not get frustrated with the guineas' chirping is another entertainment for us! For the Cabins, do you have enough straw to build a straw bale cabin? you will probably want to clad it, though you can use clay or rocks from the property to keep costs down even more, but they are great for walls and wonderfully insulating. If it's a "temporary" building, it will go up fast, you either need timber framing to support the roof, or you could even use the greenhouse frame (another one) and fill each tube with a bamboo cane and some thin-set to give more rigidity; the straw bales will withstand winds, for sure - Worth some research if you are going to have a source of bales each year - you can add a cabin or two each time around a courtyard setting for your outdoor cooking space etc - something more to think about 😅
I've wondered for a few months of when you would realize that you could do a "shed mansion" for yourselves. 1 shed is a bedroom with a door to another shed that is a common room with a kitchen and another shed that is attached to the common room and bedroom. I'm so glad you've finally thought of it. I love that you have a tax break on the sheds. That is truly a great thing to have while you are slowly getting your homestead built up. Prayers you get this going soon. THE CAT situation, you might find a couple of cats so you have better coverage of the mice issue, and you have a companion for them. Just get them fixed. You might find a neighbor that has outside cats that have young ones.
You guys definitely need to build a little place for your own comfort! If your bodies aren’t in shape you won’t be able to take care of all your family of goats and dogs and birds.. 🦅. ❤
I lived in a camper for years, we put metal siding around it. We also put a 60w light under there and no more freezing of pipes. Living in colorado that was a must.
Asking at the Feed Store is a great idea! And you have a perfect place to keep it/them! Your new bird coop! Keeping them outside will keep them where you want them to hunt. An old wive tale says to dip their front paws in melted butter! Then they won't run away!
How i got a cat... my neighbor brought one home and it decided I am it's person... lol I am excited for you all on the building on or whatever you decide! Love you all so much! Continued prayers and God bless ❤❤
Thats what happened to my brother recently. Hes got a cat now....😂😂😂 But thats ok. He needs a companion. He just lost his dogger sev mo ago. They were inseparable.
Your best bet for a barn cat is a kitten from someone that has a barn cat. If you do that the kitten will already be trained by its barn cat mom. I already had a cat when I moved to the country, but the barn cat kitten we rescued was a much better mouser.
I live in a camper in Iowa. I have a propane furnace. Its drafty when the wind blows and I can keep my condiments on the floor next to my bed and the couch! One time my fridge quit! I tried to keep food in a cooler with ice but lost all my freezer meat cause it wasn't cold enough outside! But the milk did freeze beside the couch! Anyway I guess what I'm saying is I know what you're talking about. Its hard but if you have no other options you have to deal with it. I know with Kyle's skills with building you'll do ok!
I just watched a gal in New Zealand who designs tiny houses & she uses the pod idea to add living space. Great idea! Get a massage before chiropractic appointment & your treatment will last longer because your tight muscles will loosen up. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦🌻
You need at least two cats, get kittens. Check your feed store, ask your neighbors, people are always going to give away kittens. Love your videos, God bless you Kyle and Shannon.
Add some plywood to the inside walls You don’t have to cover all of it. Then add linoleum to the floor and up some of the walls. It will make clean up easier. If you want to. You are doing a good job. God Bless
Try your local rescue. Yes, any striped Tom Cat will do the trick, and I bet if you have a kitten who has to stay inside with you guys until it's safe to leave it out with the dogs will turn you into a cat guy. They are very sweet, cuddly, playful and loving. Just your style Kyle and I KNOW Shannon will not be able to resist it either. I am enjoying the Duss acres videos. Keep then up please. I love the animals, but I'm here for all of it.
Oh my, Kyle please be careful when you go to the Chiropractor. I went once because everyone told me it would help. IT DIDN'T. IT MADE MATTERS WORSE. It's a long story. Just please be careful. Also everything I've seen said that it hurts the joints. My back got better after I started taking OTC antiinflammatories. This is just my experience.
Same. And I know a couple folks who were actually injured by chiropractic "doctors" ! One needed surgery for a ruptured tendon caused by the chiropractic "manipulation"! 😢
I have arthritis and l swear by weekly massage therapy. It has helps me recover from soreness and be able to continue to do physical chores around my house at the age of 76.
@@Og-JudyI know. I can't say for sure but I think that's how I ended up with spinal stinois. I had gone a few times and I couldn't stand up straight because my back hurts so bad. They thought it was because of something else and kept over adjusting. Finally one day I couldn't move. I couldn't get out of bed. And started talking anti inflammatory OTC pills, heating and ice pack. 3 days later I was fine.
Get a couple females they are the best mousers. Put up a notice at the farm store. Yellow cats are sturdy. Just get them Spade before turning them loose. Or watch Craigslist.
My Brother & Sister in law had a single wide trailer they had to get rid of when they built their house. They lived in their Garage/Shop while they built their house. Walled off 1 bay, put in a toilet, cheap shower & bedroom. Had the Washer & dryer in another part. Cooked on a camper stove. I'll try to find out what else they did & email it to you. They have fainting goats, chickens, Silkies & Banty Chickens. For sure 2 kitties.
I have 5 kittens available. All are doing very well with the birds, goats, pigs and dog. One of them likes to come in for about an hour of cuddles every day. Bruno and Hercules will be your biggest challenge to keeping a kitten. Unfortunately, I am in Florida and you probably don't want to come get any of them. Also, You would probably end up wanting one of the 4 kune piglets and/or 5 goatlets I have available. 😅
Doing a gradual home build would definitely work. I know a couple who bought acreage outside town and started out building a 2 car garage with a bathroom and kitchenette. they lived in that for a couple years while they expanded, adding on additional living space, full sized kitchen, master suite, office, and additional bedrooms. they installed sliding accordion style doors so they could close off different portions of the house when they weren't being used.
An animal shelter is a good place to start and get two kittens. Start them out in the camper and introduce them to to Bruno first and he’ll become protective of them. The mice will smell cats in the trailer, then start moving them to other buildings and intro to the other animals.
Get 2 kittens from the same litter. They never fight and keep each other company too😊I have sister cats so sweet Get your cat from a shelter that will spay and or neuter it. Usually the cost is to cover the surgery and the shots to keep the cat healthy. Nut bolt and a lock washer would solve the gate issues. 😊 I found your other channel yeah! I even went to Chad's site to see if he had it but I found it today. Thanks for linking it
I would love to love on Herc. You need two cats for your area of living. What is the shed you are working on going to be used for? Where does Herc sleep most of the time? I love your videos. I love you guys including all the animals. ❤❤❤
You have wonderful and handsome 2 dogs. You all lucky to have each other. I just lost my dog a couple weeks ago and I know how you feel about losing nila. Love you Kyle and Shannon. ❤❤. God Bless.
lol lol good helper. Days like this is when I like to work out in the yard. That is so sweet how Herc and Bruno greet each other. Love it! Can't wait to see they run and play. lol lol we all check out turds. Oh Kyle, cats will become your best friend. Yes, kittens, at least two so it has a friend. I bet you have neighbors that have kittens. I love cats. Love seeing the goats play and but heads. Spruce is so funny, tapping Whiggy's head. lol I am enjoying Doss Acres. Peaceful to watch them. Glad to hear your building plans. Yes, take care of yourselves! If you don't you can't take care of your animals. All the best! God Bless.
That is not a crazy idea at all! Loads of people are choosing simple living and buying small buildings and converting them to homes. What ever works best for you. If you decide to build later, that space can be for company.
I was thinking the same thing that you should live in the cabin while you were saying you need a better place to live That's a great idea to add on different rooms You will feel much better when all that is done Good thinking guys💖💚💜🇨🇦🦩 Stay Happy 💫✨🌟✨
My $.02 worth is depending on the price of lumber by you would it be cheaper to get a shed and add on to office, that way you would have the space for what ever when you do/if build your house. Stay safe
Just find a bigger "Cabin" that you could live in comfortably and then put a bathroom/laundry room into the little one you are using as the office with a covered walkway (door on the side of each building). Bruno likes tug-of-war!
Check out Factor for yourself and use code 50KSGETOUT to get 50% OFF plus free shipping on your first Factor box at bit.ly/4fjQ4vb
I love the factor meals! Haven't been able to afford them for a while, though.
If you're gonna keep the cats outside full-time, get two or more kittens so they can pair up to protect eachother and keep eachother warm at night.
When you find a barn kitten you should get 2.
I agree with the consensus, two young cats would be best. If you train Herc and Bruno not to touch them. The boys will protect the cats if they learn that they are part of the herd.
How to get farm cats. Standing in the middle of a local crowd and shout, "I want to farm kittens". Everyone will have gift you their extra kittens.
When I was on a farm we got are cats from a shelter. They definitely keep the mice and rats down.
You can get kittens/cats from local animal shelters.
Some humane society's will have cats all ready spayed or neutered and have had their shots and complete evaluation. Some private shelters do the same. My Rosie came from a shelter and she was fixed before I adopted her.
I remember Grandpa and Grandma saying they didn't want cats and then that they would never be inside cats, and we know how that went ladt winter! Can't wait to see y'alls cat journey! 🤭😉😂🥰

I like your multi shed home idea. Connect a few together, insulate plumbing, electric and you're good to go!
I would ask at your feed store. Farmers usually have kitten being born. I would get more than one. But that’s what I would do. You do you. ❤
Kittens do better with two.😊
Get two females and get them fixed! Cause believe me if there's a male within 10 miles he will find them then you have a real big problem lol females hunt better than the males plus males spray on everything yuk
I think Bruno would see kittens as an entree ...sorry 😂😂
agree, over here the local SPCA and the sheriff department's animal shelter always have cats but most folks who have kittens they need to give away take them to the corner feed store to be adopted.
Jack Russell terriers are also great ratters, but they may also like guineas
Get a couple of cats. Check with local farmers. Make sure that they are spayed or neutered. 🐈
We got 4 and then 4 more, they (8) are all fixed, no mice problem, they love their outdoor cat house that was built!
You can adopt kittens from animal shelters.
Theyll prob have to do that. I dont know that farmers do that so much.

Anyway I guess what I'm saying is I know what you're talking about. Its hard but if you have no other options you have to deal with it. I know with Kyle's skills with building you'll do ok!
I’ve always thought the office would be a great start of a house. You could get a second one and connect them then divide them into rooms.
We had two hurricanes in three weeks and now a third one is in the gulf moving toward Florida where I live.

It's not even a TS yet and depends on other factors could send it into Mexico
🙏🏻❤️
I just watched a gal in New Zealand who designs tiny houses & she uses the pod idea to add living space. Great idea! Get a massage before chiropractic appointment & your treatment will last longer because your tight muscles will loosen up. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦🌻
You need at least two cats, get kittens. Check your feed store, ask your neighbors, people are always going to give away kittens. Love your videos, God bless you Kyle and Shannon.
2 kitty's would be great. I cant wait t see Herc and Bruno together playing. Great video. 💕🍁🌾🍂
Add some plywood to the inside walls You don’t have to cover all of it. Then add linoleum to the floor and up some of the walls. It will make clean up easier. If you want to. You are doing a good job. God Bless
Shelter is the best place for cats
Think the buildings idea is terrific. It would serve it purpose for you.
Hi greeting from down under. (Australia)🖐️
Check with other homesteaders and farmers for cats or kittens
I remember when your septic hoses froze up too, that was terrible. Hopefully you’ll be better set for this winter.❤
I'd get two cats. Our yellow cat is the biggest hunter we've ever had. Catches something almost every day
You are right about getting a kitten. Slow introduction is good. Ask around, you'll find a cat or two, lol
🙋♀️ Good Evening Shannon and Kyle!! 🍁🌻🍂
Good evening Shanon and Kyle❤
You have wonderful and handsome 2 dogs. You all lucky to have each other. I just lost my dog a couple weeks ago and I know how you feel about losing nila. Love you Kyle and Shannon. ❤❤. God Bless.
Sorry for your loss, it is hard losing a beloved pet.
Hello Kyle and Shannon
lol lol good helper. God Bless.
Hello from Seymour Iowa I love your videos and your lives and family both human and animals ❤️❤️😊💗🙏💗.
Hi I enjoy all of the videos you put out. I love watching all of the animals. And the 2 dogs a amazing. A fan from PA.
The question is: how will the dogs react. Kittens Local Animal Shelter
