Roland TR8 vs TR-09 vs Cloud - TR909 Comparison
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- A quick look to see how the various Roland emulations of its own magnificent 909 compare with each other.
There some speculation about the different technologies and algorithms - this demo is purely looking at IF there are differences between them..
This isn't meant to be a fully fledged demo or review of the drum machines - just looking at if there are sonic differences and if so what are they.. :)
and there are!

TR-09 is my fave drum machine.
Same 👍🏼
Great 909 comparison. I’ve had the original since 1990, all sound good but the roland cloud sounds the best plus extra editing.
This just prove that sometimes having less (features) means more (or better sound) TR8 / TR8S try do to too much but nothing really great while the Tr-09 just do one thing but do it great... thanks for the video!
Crazy how different they sound! Thanks for the comparison!
From this video, the TR-09 overall sounded best. To me, the snare and kick were better, while the open hat was no worse. Having the original workflow and pattern storage definitely puts the TR-09 a step above the TR-8 in just about every way.
The TR8 was the first digital hardware recreation from them and I think they've refined in since then. Ihave a TR8 and have always been disappointed and not used it that much, very clean and flat - when you switch from 808 to 909 on it you realize how similar they are on the TR8 on a lot of sounds.
Another great comparison video. Thank you.
They are different, I asked Roland, they told me the output stage of hte TR09 replicates the original where as the TR8 has a more mastered output stage to make it sounds more like a finished produced sounds. That was what Roland said years ago via email.
You could have gotten an orignal in this too tbh that would have been awesome!
Haha - if I had an original I wouldn’t have the others :). .. but of course I agree. If anyone is in the Liverpool area with a 909 they can bring over...
Yeah I was impressed when the boutique tr-09 came out. It immediately sounded like the tr-909 I used to have. I stupidly assumed the later released tr-8s would sound the same as the tr-09, and traded it in towards the tr-8s, but they don’t. Now I want to buy a tr-09 again, but they’ve shot up to about $600/700.
They're about 200-300€ used in germany...
@@konradhausmann6359 I would love to visit Germany. Any good German sites that ship to US that you can recommend?
@@JaredNichols909 music Store and thomann are both great. For used synths I'd look on ebay Kleinanzeigen
@@konradhausmann6359 Thank you!
@@JaredNichols909 you're welcomr
This might be of interest: the Roland TR-6S has two 909 snare variations, both ACB (909 Snare1 and 909 Snare2). I isolated the snare hits from this video, and compared them to the TR-6S models, thereby following Starsky's edits to the Tune, Decay and Snappy parameters. 909 Snare1 sounds and behaves exactly like the TR-8. 909 Snare2 sounds and behaves exactly like the TR-09/Cloud909 (I strongly suspect the perceived 'differences' in sound between the TR-09 and Cloud909 as heard in this video all stem from amplitude and velocity variations).
Yeah, I’m pretty sure they use the same ACB algorithms tbh but Roland aren’t clear on this. Nice test ;)
The TR8 is my favourite drum machine of all time! I always have a smile when I'm using it & still comment EVERY TIME about how much i love it. I'm a TR8 bore! But still, isn't enjoying it why we do this?😂
Although I got the TR8S I kept the TR8 for its instant hands on approach. Love it. Not too deep .. does what it does and does it brilliantly.
@@StarskyCarr if you ride the delay just right, it can be spectacular! Yeah, as a performance drum machine, it has no equal imho... Plus 808 kick & 909 hats in the same kit!!! (chefs kiss)
Sorry, getting carried away! 🤣
Thanks for doing this! I think it's interesting how on the TR-09 snare, you can hear the noise oscillator trail out even after the envelope finishes, but with the other two, it's as though they have a noise gate. As far as Roland analog drum machines, I've only owned a DR-110 and a TR-606, but the behavior of the oscillators in the TR-09 feels the most authentic. That being said, it's such a minimal difference between the three, and it seems like the choices made in the cloud & AIRA versions probably save a standard step or two in the production chain.
In your own research, have you seen any comparisons of the TR-8 to the TR-8S? I'm assuming they share the same algorithm, but then with Roland, you never really know until you do a side by side comparison.
I've heard the 8 and 8S sound the same, but haven't played the 8S myself. I agree that the TR09 feels m most authentic - which is a shame as I was hoping to save cash by having the 808 and 909 all in the TR8. Not sure I can bring myself to sell it now!
Was a little bummed when I realized the Tempest doesn't include the full 909 sample set - somehow didn't notice all these years till I went to make a TR-Techno kit!
This gives me hope that Roland can release a TR-606 Boutique that sounds right! Is there a Cloud 606? Would love to an improvement on that TR-8 expansion kit.
all 3 sources are great. no matter what, regular listener don't care about analog, vst or emulation. its all about final product. anyway thank you for your time and presentation.
I love the midi drums the TR boutiques spit out, I finally have the holy Grail drum computer I've been searching for all these years.
The TR-8 is a cool sound card with an xox grid and a middle finger salute to all things cloud based.
The TR-8 is amazing for playing live... so flexible you can program as you play. Like any instrument it takes a bit of practise, but once you've a few tricks up your sleeve you can play for hours.
Starsky Carr I'm not much of a performer so I'll never use it in such a manner. I like digging for patterns an scrolling / scanning through kits with those patterns searching for the "perfect" beat. I really was disappointed with the TR-8 and regretted buying it after the TR-08 & 09 were released, I felt burned by Roland and to add insult to injury, these MF'ers released a TR-8S. WTF!!!😡 That's what the TR-8 should have been from the word go.
TR-09
Love your track at the beginning and end
If you want to get your TR-8S 909 kit sounds like the 09, use the « 909 Bass2 » on BD and the « 909 Snare2 » on SD (instead of Bass1 and snare 1 who are TR8 version).
I forgot to thank you for this « Vs » video . Nerdy AF 🤓
On the kicks I like the TR-09 the best. The others sound lifeless. The 8 is louder than the cloud but missing something that makes it impure.
On the snare the cloud and the 09 sound great! 8 not so much.
On the open the 8 and 09 were similar, but the cloud sounded tamer that the others. That may be better is certain situations.
Ultimately unless I needed a hardware feature or technological advantage I would not sell any one of them to procure to another.
@@LucasS095 If I did not already have a TEMPEST I would take the TR-09. I'm just going to sample drums and phrases into the Akai FORCE anyway. But a laptop studio person could do better using the cloud and recording to their favorite DAW.
via expansions didn't the tr-8 have several 909 sounds available?
did they update to match the tr-09
Yes, it has 'attack kick' and 'attack snare' that are slightly more aggressive. I've not included them here as they are processed so not comparable with the dry TR8 or cloud versions.
I doubt the differences in these two come down to something a simple as this one or that's chip being "better" than the other. It's far more likely Roland's designers made the intentional choice of creating variances in the algorithm's settings. Remember these are software instruments. They're complex models of analog circuits. Even the digital sample sections of the machines like the 909's cymbals are getting colored by analog circuits being modeled in software since those samples get played back through vintage DAC hardware. The TR-8 was clearly designed for what Roland imagined one type of user would want, and the TR-8 goes after another. The good news is we have options. They all sound really good.
They all use a compressor in the chain, right? Even when compression is off, it's still part of the signal chain. Could be that this is implemented differently?
The compressor is off in all these, but yes you can add it in the TR8 easily with a dedicated compression knob per voice. On the TR09 it’s a couple of key presses to get to the compressor/gain.tune menu for some of the sounds.
The TR8 seems to be tuned slightly lower.
the tr8s greatest advantage is the possibility of assignables outs!
I loved your voice work in Portal 2
Cloud (VSTi) Wins!!! Simple As That... But Make Sure You Turn The Velocity Down To Around (88) The "Sweet Spot" In Your DAW To Correct The Distortion. Great Comparison Vid, Plus Editing, Nice One... 👍
Funny that.. my latest v video on the 808 clones decides just that.. :)
Cool... I Did a Vid years ago, Sent close Friends the Audio Version & asked "Name the Tune" They all got back saying "Mantronix Bass Line" Then I Shown the the Vid. Here is the Vid: ua-cam.com/video/-hWv4FYrcIw/v-deo.html 1-1 last Week.... @ Old Trafford. 👿
tr 09 vs tr8s would be intresting!
I think the TR8 uses the same engine as the TR8S so (obviously ignoring the TR8s sampling capabilities) this should be the same: ua-cam.com/video/_nHkHu4Ysak/v-deo.html
@@StarskyCarr you have a typo, not tr8 -> tr09. yes i know but i'm sure there is a difference in sound btw. tr09 and tr8s. would be intr. how much it is.
If Roland had made a larger version of their TR-09 I would have been totally happy, but Its micro size and lack of outs made it sort of unusable for me. I have experience with the cloud version and a TR-09. I have found the cloud version to be the most accurate to the original.
Tested the TR-8 today and I am happy, that i didnt buy it. I didnt like it enough and thanks for the comparison.
now compare 2 different tr-09's and 2 different tr-08's with each other. :D
First. Happy 909 Day. :)
plz make a rd 8 vs tr808 vs "xyz 808 clone" :D
i like your approach they sound Different I do have the Roland TR-909 Cloud & The Arturia Spark 2 the cloud is amazing the Arturia Spark 2 has some nice 909 808 707 606 & Linn drum Simons kits as well as EMu Driumulater & Oberheim not a bad collection .Thanks for the test drives \
I’ve got Spark - but rarely use it. I’ll have to dig it out again. I liked playing with the ‘analog’/modular style sounds plus the vintage collection you mention. Thanks for the reminder!
Sometimes Cloud and TR-8 sound most alike, and sometimes Cloud and TR-09 sound sound alike. Go figure :D
