I saw Stephanie Mills at the Beacon!! She fell during the cane dance with the crows. The Understudy took over after an unscheduled intermission. The audience was a bit cruel when the preformance restarted with the Understudy. A thick sista up front stood on her seat, faced this angry NYC audience and yelled out "Give the girl a chance!!". The audience fell silent. The young lady sang her heart out and got three standing ovations that night during the show and madness ovations at the end!
I forever Thank that brave lady in the audience for facing the crowd and allowing a Beautiful night to unfold. I couldn't find her after the show but she has my eternal gratitude! A Queen and an Angel! ❤
Yes that understudy is Inaya Jafan Davis “Inaya Day” who blew the roof of the Beacon. I caught her performance on Easter Sunday 1993 at the final show which she again understudied and performed standing in for Ms. Mills and I will never forget it!!!

@@noneone2u Theres a video that she made on here telling that EXACT same story but what actually happened to her backstage as she was just sitting around, NOT in costume or make-up. She literally got thrown on. Stephanie came off and she came on, there was no time for an announcement as it was literally mid show. Amazingly talented ladies the both of them.

I wish they had done a cast recording. It was a great cast and her voice had grown since the original Broadway production.

I will see the Wiz again in San Diego, CA January 13, 2024. The first time was in 1976 in Chicago, IL starring Stephanie Mills. She was the tender age of 18 years old.
That was the best audio. Stephanie is so anointed with her vocals. I felt the magic of a performance I saw at The Majestic Theatre !!
I saw this tour at The Beacon theater in NYC. Was an amazing experience! I will never forget that incredible voice. It was a beautiful production.
I did as well and it was an enjoyable experience! I also saw the original on Broadway in 1975 which IMHO was the best of them all!
Man Stephanie got me shouting at 8am!!!!

I wish the new revival hadnt thrown out the orignal book! I mean it won a Tony Award how are you gonna rewrite the whole thing?! Especially the changes to the second act just didnt make sense.

No. Footage of the 1993 revival can be accessed at the Theater on Film and Tape Archive (TOFT) at the Lincoln Center branch of the New York Public Library.
Before dreamgirls was released, I used to go to that library to watch, and I always had to get the permission of the estate of Michael Bennett to do so. This was of course, back in the day before social media.
