Chris, I've been singing my whole life, I've been in and out of voice lessons and have always been told I was great. I know I'm a good singer, however, vibrato was the missing link I never had. That small beautiful wavering was always out of reach. This video had me being able to reproduce vibrato, on purpose, after the first watch. Today is the second day going through it and I'm already feeling more in control of being able to turn it on and off. I hope you understand how much unlocking this means to some people. I feel like I will now be able to fully express the emotions of music, thank you so much and have a wonderful day.
I'm watching at work and stifling my laughter. Yet it all makes so much sense. Can't wait to give these ideas a stab tonight after everyone I live with is fast asleep and I can commit to the silliness of it all. Great stuff.
By far the best vibrato lesson I've seen or done. I love the way Chris brings body awareness into his exercises so I can feel the necessary sensations at the extremes and then dial them back for something that sounds pleasing.
this is literally what i’ve needed!!! my vibrato always seemed to come out forced and inconsistent although i have pretty good breath control. i was wondering what the difference between learned vibrato and natural vibrato and now i understand. thanks for helping me finally find my natural vibrato! this video is such a life saver!!!!!
ummmm I was NOT expecting that singing clip in the beginning -- DUDE YOU HAVE AN EXCELLENT SINGING VOICE JEYSUSSSSSSSSSSS! The toneeeeeee….. I’m flabbergasted … and benevolently jealous XD -- you look like a bald muscular gladiator with the voice of a rock star angel…. DAMN. Leave some goodness for the rest of us. 😂😂😂 awesome vid man
This is far better than any previous instruction I had. I can do short "tremolo" vibratos by modifying air pressure, but the subtle sustained vibrato has always eluded me. For the first time I can "feel" its foundations without "cheating". Really nice job, man!
This is something I've had difficulty understanding over the years cuz I have a tendency to overreach the note when I go into belting from soft. The way you explain it here hits home.
New subscriber here. I must say this method has worked pretty much instantly for me. I had tried a lot of different theories, but this worked indeed. Chris, you are the man!
Thanks for these tips, Chris! I'm planning on practicing this technique over the next several weeks, likely from the insulation of my car during my commute. I don't care how ridiculous I might end up sounding in the process. But I'm eager to give my voice that extra edge, especially since I can't currently sing with vibrato, and it's limited my opportunities so far. I was able to find and fine-tune my mixed voice with your help and was able to add over a half octave over my normal chest range in the process (without sounding strained or "thin"), so I'm confident that, if anyone's technique might finally help my vibrato find me, it'll be yours. I'll check back in after some time. Also, thanks for keeping humor an element in your videos. It's a reminder to me to lighten up and enjoy the process!
Really cool explanation Chris. I've been teaching singing for 15 years and vibrato speed is something that I personally find hard to control. Vibrato is a minefield. This was a really interesting approach. Thanks.
I used to sing opera a lot and my trainer (a legit opera singer) told everyone NOT to learn fake vibrato (or the sheep technique, as she called it). When you have the right singing technique, you will be amazed to find out that vibrato is indeed not a technique. And surely enough, was I amazed!
I've been mostly using the tremolo technique to achieve the faster vibrato, (I just like the way the really fast vibrato sounds and I've been trying to figure out a way to speed mine up) but it's kind of inconsistent, when I can activate it. I thought it wasn't possible to speed up the laryngeal vibrato until I found this video and tried the techniques. It's not consistent either yet, but after continuing to practice these techniques, I can hear short spurts of the laryngeal vibrato that is much faster than I thought I was capable of. Thanks a ton for this video Chris.
Around a month since I made my last comment and the advice you gave me helped a lot. I focused on the vibrato i could already do. But came back to attempt these techniques and made it much easier for me to do vibrato. Thank you
Wow. I've been trying to figure out vibrato on my own for several years with really poor results. And now, just by watching and following this video, it just clicked and I can easily control the vibrato however I please! You're a wizard, Chris :D
I really appreciate this video Chris, as I have never been able to achieve a natural sounding unforced vibrato until I watched this video. The description and way you lead us to the feeling in the chest/abdomen region is helpful to pinpoint what you should be aiming for. I managed to find a helpful shortcut for me to achieve pretty reliable vibrato thanks to this understanding of the mechanics. What I do is having a decent support of the note in the abdomen and diaphragm, when I want to hit the vibrato (and like you said it seems to really work when you change the pitch) I notice my belly goes out instead of up and in, and my chest drops a little and in, maybe slightly compressing. With this I can almost hit it on cue. Thanks so much man 🙏
Hi, i believe that this is the best training ever above all the others when it comes to vibrato training, however its already three-days now, but I've already seen meager results from these exercises....love it.. keep it up. .. im from the Solomon Islands
Ive been singing my whole life, i even took vocal lessons in highschool and my teacher complimented my vibrato. Im now in choir for the first time as a 22 year old freshman in university and i was told that i use a "fake" vibrato. I didnt know there was such a thing. Im now having a bit of a crisis trying to learn to sing with a real vibrato
I joined the 365 group. I learned so much just from your warm ups. I did the fry and head voice thing along with you and locked in this wicked cool tone I've never even heard myself make lol
That was such a great tutorial, i just started having the hang of tremolo since basic control over my voice from my well trained music ears and i am a good copycat, but this was what i was looking for, and its like the 10th video for vibrato and tremolo i am watching trying to understand the technique, pretty awesome and fun to watch too! Yes it sounds ridiculous, but if you ask me, I love ridiculous =D
My friends passing my practice snippets of weird noises on my back and my mum laughing at me all the timr but hey, i can sing. Thank you for all the stuff chris
woOOOOAAAAH!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I FINALLY ACHIEVED IT!!! YOU ARE THE BEST !! ha ha I couldn't contain my laughter trying, but i finally did it with your help!!
NO WAYY!!! This is the ONLY video that have helped me to even find vibrato! (If im doing it correct). It was the thing that letting the larynx lose by having your power from the stomach. Then your larynx could go up and down
I've never tried to work on vibrato but I noticed it happening a few times in the last week or so. So today I'm on a journey to learn more about it and i'm starting with your videos Chris
Have you ever delved into the vibrato technique that opera singers use? It is a sort of relaxation response that creates an oscilation and a ton of resonance, which makes the note loud as hell. It is awesome to use in belty rock vocals.
@@chrisliepe huh, are you sure? It sounds and feels totally different, though. When I use it, I don’t control the oscillation “manually”. It will just happen with relaxation.
@@weoddity8622Unless you are stuck on the ealier steps of this, this will become a natural vibrato. With the rapid movements you teach the chords to get relaxed and then you have to get rid of the "forcing' and tremolo. It's hard to get rid of it, many singers just keep using it because it's easier.
Thanks Chris.. super interesting! I've been singing a long time, but have always struggled with vibrato. Maybe using these techniques, it will finally find me!
Really enjoy your videos! I have been singing for a long time but it's never too late to learn new techniques and tricks. And the way you instruct makes it super easy to learn. Thanks a million!
My vibrato just came through the years of singing, some call it 'the Elvis thing' 😊 or crooner style voice. I have learned to control it so that I can use it wherever I want. thx 4 the vid. (goolge transl. i am dutch)
I lost my vibrato because of anxiety and tensions. And then tried to find it again for 25 years until my voice was almost completely gone. One of the saddest tragedies of my life.
I can do the slower belly laugh, and it feels like I've got good breath support, but in your "restraint" section around the 4:15 mark (after you eliminate the "H" sound), I find it very challenging to "bounce" around at that same fast speed that you're doing. Only slowly. What might be the problem here?
Wow, at :30 you can actually *see* the vibrato on his t-shirt, under his right arm (viewer’s left) near his rib cage. That’s insane. Does that come from diaphragm movement? I know when I do vibrato (or attempt it, to be more accurate) my larynx moves visibly, which I’ve heard is not a good sign. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen this visible movement near someone’s rib cage before. That’s impressive.
I just waited for my parents to get out of the house! There's no other way to run these voice experiments. More importantly, this is extremely beneficial for your health. We excercise other parts of the body, but never bother to look into the muscles that are seamlessly recruited during vocal practices.
Hay Chris, could you to some tear downs of blues singers? Examples would be like kaleo or radio company. The range, dynamics and styles seem to have some different kinds of engagement from rock well still keeping that intense feel. Love your videos! And thank you, your videos have been a big help building the confidence to approach singing in my musical journey as a guitar / ukulele player.
I noticed there's two ways (well, three, but that one is not using the same muscles and sounds fake) I can do vibrato, and on the most automatic way I can do it (slight modification of oral cavity while doing a comfortable note with zero strain or push) it is harder to do it with some vowels
Sounds like finding vibrato is like finding enlightenment
Agree with you
Enlightenment is easier though
@@rishiii8t814 haha… good one.
You have to try and its not impossible
i've found enlightenment but not my vibrato :(
Hearing you sing acapella was so good on my ears. After all the ugly sounds I've been making this month, this was pure heaven Chris.

Well taught, Mr. Lieppe! You remind us of something too often ignored or, worse, forbidden: singing is music and music is play.
That's an amazing in depth way to help vibrato happen naturally!!! Great singing in the beginning too!!!
Thank you Jamie!

Yes! This is essentially what we are summoning here!! :)
