- This video shows how to shoot a spring-powered air rifle accurately using the artillery hold. If you feel your air rifle could be more accurate, this video will show you how to improve your shooting.
I am a 71 year old disabled vietnam combat veteran .I am greatful to have found this .I am going to teach my grandson to shoot .I made expert with the m16a1 so it is kinda hard to break that old habit .spot wield firm grip thank you for pointing this out .👍👍👍🇺🇸🗽
Good advice! Proven it to myself. I've also noticed different points of impact between rest methods; sand bag, bracing from vertical supports (such as trees or posts) and off hand. I chose to zero in offhand as it's most common in use for me. One of the best ways to steady offhand is to tuck your elbow in to your chest so the rifle "hangs" out in front and your offhand is nearer the trigger guard. Set your scope height and eye relief so you're not "craning" your neck for an upright position.
I take it one or two steps further when holding the gun (or not touching it is more accurate). Push the butt stock away from your cheek and shoulder, (I just barely touch, as little as possible. The butt stock is a long lever. Don't touch it.). Then with the gun just resting on my hands, I try to squeeze the trigger with out moving the gun, (A light trigger setting is much desired, since you are not touching the gun.). Let the gun shake it's groove thing, and groups like that can be had over 60 yards. The gun starts moving before the pellet leaves the muzzle. Remove the force from the stock, and it will vibrate the same every time, so the muzzle will be in the same spot every time the pellet leaves it. I also now use my middle finger for the trigger, and lay my index finger along side of the stock for a bit more stability.
Sight your gun at about 35-40 yards, (so the pellet does not cross the line of sight twice), and enjoy longer distance shooting of spring guns.
Nice vid sir. Doug in Michigan
This video is compact and direct to the point.
Great video and the last statement about holding the cocking devise is very true, Messed up my fingers big time do to being smacked by an cocking rod on a powerful RWS 460 mag!
Thanks SEK
Very good video indeed. Most informative... and very professionally put together.
It's also a good idea to to lean slightly back while resting the elbow/upper arm against your chest when firing from a standing position. Reduces muscle fatigue in the supporting arm after prolonged shooting.
What to do when personal experience teaches the exact opposite?
I'm not trying to contradict the advice given, I will most definitely practice your way.
But I recently inherited an old HW35 from which I've now shot 8 times in three weeks at a small coin from +16m. Trying to develop some kind of feeling. I finally hit the coin, after pressing the rifle firmly into my shoulder with a fairly strong left hand, arm grib.
I'm most thankful for your advice and I can't wait to try it out.
I really love your method of teaching..May you live long...
Good video for explaining.
Combine this with the follow through technique, IE squeezing the trigger, and keeping it held until the pellet/Projectile has hit the target, to minimise movement during the shot, Don't let go until its hit the target, otherwise you will be moving. then you are onto a winner!
I did some surfing and found a guy who told us about the loose hold and you are saying the same thing. You both are right on the money with this advice. I have had a Daisy/Rogers AR 1170 for several years and was very disappointed with the accuracy. The front sight was so tall the rear sight needed to be maxed out in elevation. The other day I had the need for an air rifle when my cat brought a live mouse in the house to play with. Of course it got away from him eventually, oh joy now I have a live mouse loose in the house. I managed to do the little wanker in but it peaked my interest in my springer air rifle again. By the way I did not nor do I advocate shooting an air rifle at mice in your house.
So I brought the unloved air rifle out from behind the office door where it has been for several years and went to work on it. Using some sand paper I wore the front sight down so the rear sight is slightly elevated and the front is just a nub sticking up but still gives an excellent sight picture. Practicing the loose hold method the accuracy improved greatly to less than an inch at twenty yards. I was really impressed with the results. I am sure it will do better with better pellets but what I have now is working pretty well, Daisy Max Speed Premium Grade Pointed Field .177 Pellets at 7.4 grains measured on my scale.
This evening I tried a little test on soda cans filled with water to see what would happen and the pellets went through both sides of the cans! Needless to say I was impressed. From now on the gophers digging holes in my lawn are under double threat from my cat and from me with my Daisy. I live in a rural environment but a standard .22 rifle can skip lead a long ways, too far for random shooting in my opinion where I live. Gophers don’t often present perfect safe shots but with my Daisy I have no worries now.
Thank you for informing us all about the proper way to shoot a springer air rifle, it makes a huge improvement.
This is going to make my accuracy better, thanks!!
Thank you So much Mr. Archer! I have a new Hatsan 125 and can't hit a barn with it so far.. when rain stops I'll try the hold you suggested. :)
Do you use the optima scope that comes with it?
LeMortso bought a hatsan 105 and it's the same thing I can't keep a group at 15m but will give it a try
I have the hatsan 125 sniper .22... Have any of use noticed when you go from shooting with the rifle rest till shooting with a artillery hold you get two completely different grouping. Is this normal? This is my first air rifle
Just bought a umarex ruger black hawk elite
These videos are perfect
Keep m coming
I really enjoy your videos Mr. Archer. Keep up the good work!
Nice video, looking forward to seeing the results of this hold next time I'm out at the range. Cheers.
well done, great vid, used them since I was about 10 years old ,,also know a few more tips, always shot rabbits etc,
Very professional presentation. Immensely helpful. thx.
Lol dat elevator music at the start :)
People with talent who can play musical instruments create music. Anything else is noise. Not just any noise constitutes music.
Junk noise we call music today, is a image of mankind's decline. But at least in the movie "Idiocracy", the idiots were playing guitars. Go figure? :)
Thanks for the tips; I just ordered a seal replacement kit for the Rugers from your store :-)
😱Wow good nice video bro..Super.... .. 😘😘💙💚💛💜💓...😍😘😇👍👍👌👌👌👏👏👏👏...happy shooting...
Problem with most spring-air is that they are break barrel. If the sight is not on the barrel (eg. using a scope), barrel droop / drift can add significant accuracy problem. I found this out by shooting with barrel resting on stand rather than stock, and got very good result. For off-hand shooting, I apply slight upward pressure on the barrel, which makes for awkward shooting position. This frustration led me to look at PCP, and QB79 seem to be just the thing; I may be ordering one soon from Archer Airguns.
Some lock up better than others, and some even have some side to side play. My Gamo .22 magnum locks up perfectly, but for my other break barrels, I grab under the muzzle to pull it up while wiggling it from side to side. Even my worst gun finds it's location pretty good. My Hatsan had some droop, but it repeated well. I was worried about the same thing when I first started shooting break barrels, and theoretically, you are right. But if the design and manufacturing are where they should be, they can lock up just as good and be very comparable to a fixed barrel springer. My buddies Gamo has just a tiny bit of droop, but mine locks up the same every time, perfectly, with out the wiggle/pull method of the breech being home that I do with my other guns.

This is so much better than the Pyramid Air's take on the Artillery Hold.
I've had a side lever slam closed on my finger tips. Heed this mans advice on safety and it will never happen to you.
@knottsscary
The gun ( if you bought it new ) is going through its running in phase mate. Dieseling off excess grease/oil depending on how the gun was assembled in factory, it will gradually get better and better over time bud. It will go through loud and quiet phases, as the spring naturally turns and cycles with a shot, so oil/grease moves about a bit. If it still persists after a few hundred shots, take it back, as you don't want it doing it too much.
Learned about this recently and it does make a difference.
Dude, that's why even tho I think I'm a bad ass I still checked to see if I was doing it right because I just bout an air riffle and something didn't feel right when I shot it, sometimes I would hit a tennis ball at 30 yards and sometimes not even get close so thanks for the great vid.
@ArcherAirguns
Sound advice. Even for regular firearms, just having the safety on doesn't make it safe to wave it around and point it dangerously. If can go wrong, it will go wrong.
Excellent tips thanks .
Ill forward this video to newcomers .
@ArcherAirguns thank you for the quick reply Stephen, I will definitely get the gun checked, and actually I was planning on buy a red dot sight, so thanks for the advice!
@baneat I also have a supersport and find the bst way to hold it is a combination of open palm and firm grip. Do a firm grip and then losen your fingers until you're almost letting go. Works surprisingly well for me.
Great video, going to give this a try. Thanks
thanks for the video Stephen, I always hold mine tight and found the accuracy a problem, i will use this technique from now on. Also are you US based? I live in England and your accent is undoubtedly british.
Great video/tutorial!
Great video there mate, its good for the technique to be explained as many give up through not knowing and go PCP YUCK!!
Thank you Mr. Archer
You could purchase a Weaver Rail from PA or Crosman for less than $20. Then solder it onto the receiver very well.
you should have an eye bell focus located at the end you look through. it turns like your main focus adjustment just turn it till everything comes clear
Thanks 👍👍
The thumbnail for this video looked like his airgun had a huge clip.
cool, its alot better for guns in the US i bet compared to here, (especially because the bad press airguns have gotten over the past few months!) and make sure u always keep your accent, english accents are the best, i love mine haha...
Great video!
Good tips 👍
OK, I've been shooting with one for over 20 years and never figured that out!
Pellet selection can be a major factor too. Some pellets just don't work well with spring piston guns.
Not at 10 yards. Even the wad cutters he is using works well. I bet even pretty round stones would work at 10 yards too.
For my slingshot though, I like to shoot a bit further. :)
Nice vintage video !
The break barrel (AR2025) was clearly already cocked tho..double pump for more power (Joke)
Great info ~ I was just thinking the other day. How many good scopes get ruined and returned to the store because people don't know springers kill regular scopes?
Hello!
I want to say that you are the best. I love your videos. I have a question anyway. I saw that you said something for the right scope for a rifle. Can you tell me the right model of the scope for a GAMO Shadow 1000? But a resonable price :D
Thank you so much.
Good Luck!
actualy perfect practice makes perfect
if u practicing the wrong way ur going to "perfectly" do it wrong
thanks alot of the information now i actually hit the target:)
A must have!!
Все правильно, только левую руку (предплечье) надо упереть в левую сторону грудной клетки, и свободно положить цевье на лпдонь в районе ближе к скобе, слегка придерживая его пальцами.
hi, nice channel for gun lovers, i have one question, which of the air guns are best for both long range and accuracy, spring, pcp, co2 or hand pump, please advice
try tightening the screw that the barrel pivots on when you load it. if thats loose your shot will be all over no matter how accuate your scope is...
Obrigado por compartilhar seu conhecimento.. Aprimorei muito a precisão dos meus tiros em papel a 10 metros com sua dica. 😊
Good video.
Does this also mean you shouldn't use a bi-pod, unless it has a recoiling system like the Dianna Air King
@ArcherAirguns it cut me off in my last comment but i was gonna say i rely like your gold service testing on airguns.
PERFECT VIDEO!!
Hello, I have a BIG trouble finding a rifle that suits me. So this is, want a rifle for hunting rats in a max distace of 20 meters but also a rifle that has the power to bring down a rabbit. So I've thinking about a .177 but maybe is to small for the rabbit ??? Dont know I have in mind the Gamo Whisper Deluxe (.177) or the Gamo Bone Collector(.22). Which will be best ??
Very good and proffessional video thanks a lot
thanks i dont know how many times i have get confuest about my air rifle its an norica massimo very expensive air rifle but do you think its great for target shooting? its 305m/s 22,3j well that is what it stands in the papers i got when buyed it but on the barrel it stands 10j however i whould need your help please answear
Thank you so Much for the info
Thats way i always miss xD
Just à beginner
allo mr archer its Kelvin ere from South West London (UK), i recently purchased a weihrauch hw97k (synthetic) rifle in .22 calibre as my first rifle, in ur experiance (if any of course) what pellets would you recommend for me to use? 9 times outta 10 im more into taking down small game but on the odd occasion a little target practice is needed, any chance you could suggest pellets for game and target practice? hope to see a reply soon & thanx for reading and ur videos are very helpfull.
The scope is center point3-9x39 ar22 series
@ArcherAirguns thanks for your advice about holding. it really worked =) now its realy more accuracy. but which pellet would you propose for me. i like to shoot longrange like 80-150meters. before i used gamo pro magnum but its not accuracy at it all.
@158057 It's not true. The debate is whether they're as accurate as a side/or under lever w/ a fixed barrel.
Mr Archer,
I'm a first time air rifle owner and I just bought an SMK XS38, a very heavy under-leaver spring air rifle, I assume it would also be known as the QB38, as well as a 3-9x56 Mil-Dot Scope
My question: as my rifle is so heavy I struggle to keep it steady, I was thinking of buying a bipod for it, ignore the factor of it being akward on an under-leaver, but would a prone shot with a bipod attached have the same negative affect as a tightly gripped hand, or the posetive of an open hand?
@ArcherAirguns whats the model of the airgun your shooting in this vid, i remember seeing on your site, along with a bunch of other unitderlever and break barrel springers, and i was thinking about buying it, also i was thinking about buying the stoeger x20 in .177 for small game hunting, do you think it would perform well enough in .177 cal, the state i live in dosent allow .22 cal airguns, but i was just thinking of buying a new airgun, and in the past i purchased a qb36-2 from you, and
@ArcherAirguns is the spring one the most powerful type of airgun
wow i never knew that. thanks!
@baneat i also have a bsa super sport and i find it painfull as well i find to do what you just said many people dont like the hold but i find it works for the gun
That's sort of what I thought. Thanks. : )
quick question, are there bolt action rifles? I know there are bolt action made for things like an airsoft gun and obviously real firearms... but I have never actually seen a bolt action pellet or bb rifle... would it be the same principle? the bolt pulls back a spring? and or pulling the bolt back would create air pressure? I dont think pellet rifles like these exist beause I tried to find one and could not seem to come across anything. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Just a technical point. I note that when you load another pellet you return the barrel up to the stock, so that the muzzle is pointed up. When I do that with my break-barrel the pellet falls out. I have to bring the stock up the barrel with the muzzle pointed down. Am I doing anything wrong?
HI ... I got very decent shoots at 25 Yards with a 4 x 32 scope . I can shoot a plastic cup (1,5 inches) from this distance , Im sure I can shoot anything even smaller , Is that cause the scope or is it considerate a good shooter . ?
Also I can nice shoot without the scope but havent tried at that distance
BTW gun is a Beeman® S1000 Air Rifle Combo .
Very decent for the price , just con is a little heavy
I have an underlever spring rifle, I am wondering if this extra weight at the front end that a break barrel doesnt have will have an effect on the recoil and so where the pellet will go?
Thank you
Hi! I am thinking of buying NORICA TITAN as my first air rifle. Would it be a good choice?
Thank You!
xD oh its the best mate! haha
Thank you for teaching us this skill though, Definitely a usable and reliable skill with a rifle. =)
Much appreciated
Kind Regards,
Jake
Great video. Just going to try this hoolding method. I'm shure i'll be very pleased with the accuracy . My gun isn't very accurate , at the moment, for shure is was i the problem , not the gun's! 5*
wow thanks this helped more i new some of that but i am now better at shooting air rifles
@filoIII Well the fixed barrel under lever rifles have always been more accurate in my experience.
@ArcherAirguns yeah it did work and i was able to hit a quarter at 30 yards!
I ALMOST lost a finger tip to an old old underlever rifle after it sprang back it splatted the finger next to my pinkie, the rifle was that old it had a ram rod to push the pellet from muzzle to breach......EEEEK
Thank you very much 5*
thanks.
nice video. : ]
What are some good scopes that are spring rifle rated? Looking to upgrade from the cheap 4X32 that came with my gun, any recommendations?
I have a Tasco scope. I think the model is mil dot 3 9 40. Is that suitable for a spring air rifle?
@ArcherAirguns ok, thank you for your reply. About pcp air rifles, how many shots would i be able to squeeze out of a decent one that you have to refill with a pump?
if you don't know whether your gun is spring powered or not then you shouldn't have a gun at all
Guys he is just detailing the vid
If I combined a DAMPA Scope Mount with a Non-Airgun Rated scope. Will the DAMPA Scope Mount solve the problem of not breaking the Non-Airgun Rated Scope?
Dear mr. archer,
I have an old diana mod. 23 break barrel spring powered air rifle, but it's got nothing at all on it for attaching a scope. This means i had to improvise a little and attached one anyways using tie wraps. It's pretty firm, but would this have any consequenses for my gun's accuracy?
i have a scope design for a fire arm can i use it on a pellet gun or it's not an advisable thing to do?!
Hi archery airguns when I zero in my air rifle I set up a table a chairI use a sleeping mat to rest my hand on and I rest the air rifle in my hang. Is this correct and if so could u do a vid on it because my groupings are a'll over the place.
What do you think of the Gamo silent cat whisper?
@BlankMindStudios What you are looking for is a Pre Charged Pneumatic (PCP) air rifle. look at pyramid air (dot) com. They have a bunch of them.
can you give advice please, im 13 and have trouble holding up my stoeger x20 suppressor for long periods of times. its hard to aim without a bi-pod or rest and its swaying like crazy. holding it in this hold makes it even worse, can you give any advice?
i have a ruger air hawk its got quite a kick and is quite loud only 108 bucks at walmart lol
