    The video is over 4 years old, but this is the first person I've seen who actually understands the engineering physics of how these things work. Others may have some knowledge, but they cannot explain it correctly. I've spent days looking at truly lame attempts by others to explain some of these very complex issues. THANKFULLY I found this. WELL DONE. I'm subscribing.

    The more I watch the more impressed I get . You will probably forget more than most shooters will ever learn about this stuff . You have a unique way of connecting the dots and getting the information to point . I had maby three teachers in my life who could explain things to me in a way to capture my interests and make sense of it . Thank you and please do not stop . "Deeds not words"

    Also to increase rigidity - make your own barrel band - put a hard rubber or plastic spacer between barrel and bottle. Can use a velcro strap to hold them together.

    Hey Matt, I just wanted to say thank you with some of the tips on this video. I was about to get crazy because my new FX Impact X on .22 caliber I’ve just recently bought (this is my second Impact) wasn’t holding the POI at 50 meters and I wasn’t capable to understand what was happening. After whatching this video again, I have just realized that I was zeroing my gun with an Air Chrony installed at the muzzle, not taking into account this was dramatically affecting the final POI. The gun was shooting just perfect (as always... this is an Impact) but my POI was completely misscalculated. Now I’m back on track!!! This little Air Chrony is very usefull to take into the field but it is important to remember NOT to use it while zeroing your gun. Thanks again man. Cheers from Madrid!

    I already had a rudimentary understanding of barrel harmonics, but I didn't realize it could have such an effect on air rifles. I just recently acquired a Benjamin Marauder in .177 and I absolutely love it. Now I have one more element that I can tinker with in order to squeeze every last bit of accuracy out of this air rifle.

    Well explained, Matt. As far as barrel weights are concerned, you might find some clues in the stabiliser systems used in tournament recurve bows. The harmonics involved in long rod stabilisers are broadly similar in many respects to those of rifle barrels. This is highly researched, mature technology and so might give you a few pointers to airgun performance.

    The EDgun Matador has a nut at the end of the barrel, that pull the barrel, stress it. According to manufacturer, it increase accuracy. And after see you video I can belive that creates a node in a great spot, that increase the consistence of vibration.
    Excelent serie Matt! Just waiting for the BC episodes. Cheers

    @jamesvolo7948 Рік тому +1

    Great series! Thanks. Very informative especially for an aged powder-burner like myself. Your ballistic principles are right on. I have discussed this very topic in my book.
    As you point out, although unseen by the shooter, long, thin barrels can vibrate upon firing somewhat like a piano string (but at a much lower frequency). This unseen, but very real, effect can affect bullet placement. Tapered barrels are both lighter and stiff, and they can be "detuned" to avoid resonant effects. Fairly recently some manufacturers have started making thin asymmetrical barrels wrapped with carbon fiber that acts to dampen resonance and affect the placement of nodes. Not being an air gun person, I do not know if this solution has made its appearance outside powder burners (or even if it is practical). Has anyone attempted "damping" by putting tape or weights at the anti-nodes?
    Also a slight lateral and rotational movement of a rifled barrel at the instant of firing causes lateral jump, which also has the effect of a small error in bearing. As the bullet gains stabilizing rotation in the barrel, the more massive barrel gains a rotation in the opposite direction in an indirect proportion to the ratio of the masses. Known as recoil torque, this effect is often ignored, since it is small when compared to translational recoil (a.k.a. felt recoil in firearms) and varies from round to round; but this suggests the need for a stiff and heavy barrel. The heavier a barrel is the stiffer it is; and the better it handles heat. Increased temperature in firearms causes the bore to dilate. Target guns have heavy barrels partly for this reason and to limit felt torque.
    Once again thanks, a great series. Air guns have clearly come a long way since the old "Red Rider" or "Daisy" BB gun!

    Changing the stock will always move the zero. You have released the loading of the screws and then re-tightened them. Even if you removed the action and then put it back in the same stock, your zero will shift. A shift in zero when fitting a modulator has nothing to do with harmonics, it's to do with air moment, as a pellet leaves the barrel a blast of air expands behind it. with a mod fitted this expanding air is taken up by the MOD. changing you zero.

    With regards to spring air rifles, The description with tension on the guitar strings describes perfectly the vibration in the spring. By adding preload (washers etc) you can greatly reduce hold sensitivity by increasing the spring frequency and amplitude that occurs after the shot. By doing this, I've noticed very little if any effect on velocity.

    Although I would absolutely agree that PCPs are better than springersat super long ranges, I do feel like it is worth advocating for them here. You can absolutely be as accurate with a springer as a PCP at typical firing distances if you are consistent with your hold (and you let that spring wear in and loctite every bolt). You will not be able to run out and pick a new springer up and go straight to hunting with one or anything. But if you fire it often and I mean run tin after tin through it until your hold becomes a habit you will absolutely be just as accurate with a springer at a pretty decent range. That said, the major point would be at those super long shots. It may be possible, but I would not trust myself to make a clean kill too far out.

    Changing stocks out will cause a point of impact different just because you have changed one foundation to another! This can be proven just by loosening the action screws a few turns and not even changing stocks. Getting barrel harmonics right I believe is getting the bullet exiting the barrel at the exact same time as the center line of vibration is at its least. And this is done by fps, while barrel length, barrel rigidity and floating barrels are important, the timing of bullet exiting at lowest vibration is most crucial.

    There are two brothers in US or Canada which have done a lot of research and developing on thickness of the barrel in different calibers for long range shooting over 2-3 km. They are kind of high-end nerds, they have a company website which are extremely interesting where they have put out their results and thoughts. I cant remember the name of their company, but they are worth googling. US Special Operations Commando (SOCOM) buys barrels from them. I know this because I am a retired Norwegian and have worked with and been told this from US SOF units. I am not in this world anymore, but I know Seal team six/development group bought barrels from them in 2011. I cant tell today obviously.

    Technical quibble; while it is possible for the totality of all motion induced in the rifle by the shot to result in a minimal amount, or at least very consistent amount of movement at the muzzle when the pellet leaves it, it is not possible for a barrel (or string or whatever) to have any individual mode with a node at the end, unless it is fixed there. An unsupported beam physically cannot have a mode with a node at the end. The barrel end is going to move; just hopefully not when the pellet passes.

  • @Crete1943
    @Crete1943 6 років тому

    Note to oneself: proper tuning involves the matching of the average velocity (i.e., the speed a pellet flies from a chosen barrel, achieving the minimum variation in feet/metres per second), of a particular caliber (a bigger caliber like, say, .30cal., is usually preferable for longer distance shooting, as it is more forgiving in terms of pellet velocity), to a particular size/weight of a pellet/ogive that is plentifully available (and cheap). These two factors, the velocity and the pellet must suit each other perfectly in a specific barrel for a particular distance in order for a quality PCP (or a CO2) air weapon, to perform optimally. Using one single stock helps to tune a precision hole puncher. Changing the stock requires a new test tuning procedure from scratch.

    Point of impact can shift just by changing the stock. Not just by harmonics but also due to fitment. You could have two of those nice stocks and the poi has a good chance of moving because nothing is EXACTLY the same no matter how hard we try to do so.

    .....I am wondering if you might be able to closely determine the locations of the harmonic "nodes" along the length of any barrel, by setting up the gun so that it is properly aimed in a safe direction, and then fired by use of a string attached to the trigger, etc., so as to minimize any "dampening" by the operator/user. Then, heavily "dust" a layer of fine, dry talc, or baby powder, or, fine starch powder along the top of the barrel, all the way along it, and when the gun is fired, most of the powder might fall away, except where those nodes are centered. Good luck!...THANKS, for all of your AWESOME, DETAILED VIDEOS!!!

      If I'm not too late you should go wood. You're paying like an extra 50 bucks or something that's going to feel a lot nicer in your hands it'll have more weight and should help with harmonics.

    The Benjamin Marauder has a floating barrel though it has a barrel band. The barrel does not touch and we are told it should not. What are your thoughts on making it more rigid by installing a semi soft material between the barrel and the band to make it more rigid. Would it dampen the vibrations or merely introduce interference in the standing wave and make the accuracy suffer?

    First of all sorry for my bad english feel free to carrect me in any linguistic errors. I cant imagine that there is a way of getting a node at the end of the barrel, because the refelction of the wave at the end will do a phase jump. So the only way of creating a standing wave is to have an non-node at the end of the barrel. Otherwise it will just do what it wants because the waves are not interfering correctly what means that there are no nodes of any kind. So i dont get how its possible to get a standing wave and a non-node at the end of a barrel. So at my point of view that is not physicly possible. How can this be done? Does anyone know more about the physics behindt it? Also u cant compair a guitar string with a barrel. A string has to fixed ends and the barrel one fixed and one open. But the Video was quit interresting. Am I wrong or is there a trick to fix this?

    Hi Matt, As I understand it, doing a "harmonic" tune on an Impact involves doing a "velocity" tune, balancing the regulator and hammer spring, then using the valve stop adjustment to fine tune the pellet speed so that it leaves the barrel on a "harmonic node". How would you go about doing the fine tune (harmonic tune) on a Dreamline (no valve stop adjustment)?

    Springers are fine for long range hunting, I can shoot cans of a pole 100 meter away consistently. As I can shoot a bird of a pole with a springer. So a springer just takes a lot of practice. Most people say that springers aren't powerfull enough to hunt with, but my Hatsan mod 135 is great for hunting. Ofcourse PCP's are capable of a lot more and are way easier to shoot.
