    Before the "ackshually" comments come in, I know this isn't the most realistic or technical way to do it. That's the point. This video is designed to showcase a simple method for carrier landings that's best suited for beginners or pilots who just want to get it done without worrying about the nitty-gritty.

    One random tidbit i'd add that occurred to me the other day was that getting a good 2 wire landing *felt* like you were gonna overshoot from your position in the cockpit.
    Basically, remember how fucking massive your aircraft is and that your tail hook is a fair distance behind you and below you. Besides, being a bolter beats crashing face first into the back of the carrier because you undershot.

    The lower speed and targeting the end of the runway helped. Thanks for the tips.

    Dude this saved me hours of frustration. My wrist injury makes fine tuning difficult, so landing isn’t always possible for me (doesn’t stop me from enjoying the rest of the game though). Having this pop up in my recommended was a godsend. Took a couple of attempts, but I finally nailed it using your video

    Nah, but a little tip for players, when starting up the game, before choosing the pilot you can go to settings,and there you can find an option which says "hook physics" or something like that.
    With that option you can enable or disable the physics of the arrestor hook, meaning it will only interact with the wires and nothing else, avoiding it from bouncing.

    • @darkstar1592
      @darkstar1592  Рік тому +13

      Very helpful tip. This landing method does work either way, surprisingly, but you need to be more precise with your landing with hook physics enabled.

    Yo fellas, another way to find your RTB point even if the mission creater didn't set an RTB waypoint is to use your COMMS page and call up ground for a rearm. That will always draw a waypoint to the closest rearm point from your current position, and in addition to that it will put the waypoint on the functioning rearm point, so no more hoping from rearm point to rearm point trying to find the one that works.

    My guy, you are a legend! Thx! I was so frustrated after lining up those landings and hitting no wires one after another... carrier landings in SP VR and Nuclear Option got me too relaxed and made me forget why IRL aircraft literally slam themselves on the deck.
    Thx a lot!

    I have been failing at this for weeks, sometimes hitting the back of the carrier, trying to get wheels down before the cables. Holy cow, I never thought I was causing the problem by landing too soon. Thanks for the emphasis!

      300 is fine for a normal runway but 200 is the absolute max for carrier landings in my experience. 180 is ideal.

    I actually found carrier landings to be pretty easy overall, and nailed it on just my 3rd attempt, even before watching this video. The only reason I didn't get it on my first attempt was because I forgot to lower my landing gear, and on the second attempt, I forgot to lower the arrestor hook. LOL

      Landing flaps will push you downward, which can make it easier to land but I’ve found that it’s easier to land on the carrier with no flaps because then my steering will be the only thing affecting my trajectory and AoA.

    • @darkstar1592
      @darkstar1592  6 місяців тому

      I use them on short takeoffs to help generate lift, but not for landings. I’ve landed without flaps so many times that it throws me off and makes it harder when I use them at this point.

    180 seems awfully fast for a landing. That said, nice to see someone using the 'point and power' technique! All this AOA business is over complicating something that is pretty simple.

    • @Darkmouse20001
      @Darkmouse20001 3 місяці тому

      Now I have it installed and I've done some testing. 150kts (possibly lower 150 still strikes me as fast) the auto throttle makes it incredibly easy, just set SPD 150. Put your velocity vector jobber half way down the ship. AoA is for noobs, point and power all the way.

      @@darkstar1592 Great tutorial dude - I see real instructors and students over complicating what is fundamentally a simple technique, and yet you've nailed it. Yes, in theory pitch controls speed and power controls rate of descent, but not on the approach - point the nose (or VV pipper) where you want to go and use power to make the speed right (or the SPD function/auto throttle of the AFCS, as you can't trim in VTOL VR).

    • @darkstar1592
      @darkstar1592  Рік тому

      I don’t think I get 60 fps either, but I play over airlink so that’s probably expected. The best thing you can do to improve performance on a quest 2 is to play connected to the PC instead of over airlink. The cable definitely helps reduce latency. Other than that, I’d check out some of the other optimization guides on UA-cam that give tips on improving steam vr and quest link latency.

      use virtual desktop. ur pc isnt powerful enough to push 90fps in vtol, so airlink just halves it and uses asynchronus space warp to double ur frames to 90, which doesnt look as good as in virtual desktop that uses SYNCRONUS space warp. cap at 45 and use ssw for 90fs, or u can enable 120fps in quest settings and get 60fps doubled to 120. works really good especially in flight sims
