    John Donne was an 18th century poet and philosopher, his most famous words here written in 1624. The poet coins the phrase 'no man is an island' to highlight that all human life is interconnected, and that we share responsibility for each other.

    "Any man's death diminishes me
    Because I'm involved in the mankind"
    Such a searingly real poetry...more so, in the harrowing times of pandemic which has united the people of the world.. underscoring the much valued inter-dependence ! The arrogance of power n wealth... the pride of fame n glory evaporates in the larger scheme of the universe. Each individual is precious n integral to the resplendence of mankind..
    Thanks for the upload!

      Lockdowns haven't united everyone. We don't all want global government, mass surveillance, and to be under house arrest without anyone even asking if we wanted all our freedoms to be taken away. And the poem, which is one of my absolute favourites, was somewhat spoiled by the fact that whoever made it doesn't know that a plural doesn't require an apostrophe. I feel that Donne's acceptance of death as a inevitability is a lesson to those who illogically want the healthy locked away, with the mistaken idea that this will magically save the lives of the old, and ill.

      If they be two, they are two so
      As stiff twin compasses are two;
      Thy soul, the fixed foot, makes no show
      To move, but doth, if the other do.
      -- John Donne
      The Lord rebuke our pride. The Lord bless our humility.
      The Lord rebuke our greed. The Lord bless our charity.
      The Lord rebuke our wrath. The Lord bless our kindness.
      The Lord rebuke our envy. The Lord bless our patience.
      The Lord rebuke our lust. The Lord bless our chastity.
      The Lord rebuke our gluttony. The Lord bless our temperance.
      The Lord rebuke our sloth. The Lord bless our diligence.
      This multi-faceted perception of God should not be conflated with God Himself. This is our human perception of our experiences of God’s interaction with us. But as James 1:17 yet states, every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. As 1 John 1:5 states, this then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

    This poem has a lot of meaning and good morals in it, but with this music and the voice... It just makes this poem mean much more than just a random poem with a random meaning. Whoever does not understand what the poem means... I feel sad for him or her because (again) this poem has a great "lesson" in it that is a 100% true.💗

    I remember having to learn this poem in 4th grade for a kids Mensa project. When I preformed it in front of the entire fourth grade class I wept, as this poem meant so much to me. Even though it meant so little to the other kids in my class. I’ve never told my parents that story. So here UA-cam.

      They say shape the clay when it is wet and not after it was put it was made hot.. Strike a hot iron while it is hot.
      LOTS of good things have to be PLEASANTLY taught in schools to children. When we grow up we develop any one or more or all of the following:
      Ego, we develop s tendency that we know all, we have no time, life's problems (due to partner or otherwise) make us devote less time to know more or there is nobody to tell/ teach us.
      So, what is learned in young age (good or bad) UNLESS the childhood is a disturbed (for various reasons) remains in the back of mind and directs us throughout the life.
      You learned the right thing in school. The compassion, that is.

    Brilliant reading...true Donne did a stint in the military but when I was studying for an English Lit degree (so not random trivia) Donne was much more renowned first as an unapologetic homewrecker than a military man--his interest in a woman appeared not to consider her marital status. Second he was known as a clergyman (that word doesn't do his refocus justice...'spiritual devotee?') who walked away completely from his former 'easy' rakish life--few people accomplish a complete transformation of behaviour as Donne did. This piece was written in the second [divinely inspired] part of his life, some years after his wife had died and after 5 of their 12 children had died. At the time this was written his commitment to The Greater Than (whatever each person names it) battled with his internal grief and loss prompting him to end his life. 'Do not ask 'whom does the bell toll for?' (gossip)...' because in all cases when the bells tolls if we are appropriately engaged with and empathic towards the community 'it tolls for us'. It never tolls for another--you hear the bell? We have all suffered a loss.

      We are all grafted from the same tree and share in sufferings of this word, even though one's self may differ from another, it is still part of a collective. Humanity is not only person but every body within it. No mind nor being may be intertwined with the other precisely, but we all are reliant on those around. If one were to kill someone, that one person would affect a family. If a president were to commit mass genocide, the entire country would be within his ideologies- keeping that in mind, not one man is an island nor entire of itself. We share interest and ideologies and we grow with those we find a connection to.

    1. “No Man Is An Island” by John Donne
    No man is an island,
    Entire of itself,
    Every man is a piece of the continent,
    A part of the main.
    If a clod be washed away by the sea,
    Europe is the less.
    As well as if a promontory were.
    As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
    Or of thine own were:
    Any man’s death diminishes me,
    Because I am involved in mankind,
    And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
    It tolls for thee

    Trading works but isn't an authentic, meaningful contribution to society. Totally agree it's sensible to make the most of opportunities, but it can't feel positive unless we're being productive. We are human; social, sentient beings.

    This is just lovely. I really like how you use symbolic voices, it makes you appreciate the poem better. However, how do I get you to work on my poetry?

    I am sorry to say this but it is not -- at least in its original form -- a poem. It's an extract from one of Donne's sermons published in Devotions upon Emergent Occasions (1624). Of course, it is also a poem, a great and eloquent one, that just happened to be written in prose. I'll retreat to the Pedantry Corner now.

    ⭐🌎 “No two men can be found who may be said to be outwardly and inwardly united. The evidences of discord and malice are apparent everywhere, though all were made for harmony and union. ...The tabernacle of unity hath been raised; regard ye not one another as strangers. Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch... _So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.”_

    No man is an island,
    Entire of itself;
    Every man is a piece of the continent,
    A part of the main.
    If a clod be washed away by the sea,
    Europe is the less,
    As well as if a promontory were:
    As well as if a manor of thy friend's
    Or of thine own were.
    Any man's death diminishes me,
    Because I am involved in mankind.
    And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
    It tolls for thee.

    Cheers!
    A toast! A toast to you and me and all this world!
    A world of nonsenses!
    Small minds and even smaller hearts!
    Ugly souls and ridiculously ugly spirits!
    Beautiful faces thou and amazing bodies; tanned skins and red lips; high heels and short dresses!
    Ties and suits!
    Lessons and theories! Yet emptiness!
    A world of confusion so confused of itself, so confused of its human beings, so confused of realities that in none of the points match goals and aims.
    When did it happen?
    The turn! The wrong one... when exactly?
    When did we start misunderstanding our own selves more than we could ever misunderstand anyone else?!
    When was the moment we decided to separate the realities from our philosophies?
    When did we say to ourselves "Is ok to not stand up for you!"...since now we were so high we didn't need to!
    When did we exactly got convinced that all friends had turned into snakes!?
    That all enemies could never change mind!?
    That all the ancestors' theories...were a myth!?
    ....it should have been a moment, a second, a full day, a week - that this transformation took place!
    In that moment...we must have told ourselves "follow them "...
    And from then - on, we're living the life we decided to!

    Not to put too fine a point on it, but I’m the ‘No Man is an Island, it refers to a ‘clod’ not ‘Claude’ which is washed away.

    If they be two, they are two so
    As stiff twin compasses are two;
    Thy soul, the fixed foot, makes no show
    To move, but doth, if the other do.
