As the national anthem played at Texas Motorplex on a warm spring afternoon, few fans were ready for what they witnessed next. Richard Hartman and Tim Wilkerson's nitro-fuelled altered (AA/FA) blasted to the first ever four second run by an altered and set a new world record of 4.92 at 296mph.
Wilkerson and Hartman are both veteran NHRA nitro drivers and tuners - it was great to see them claim one of the last major barriers in drag racing!
When even the track workers are excited, you know something badass just happened.

The reason I love drag racing right here. At 13yo sneaking into Tucson Dragway circa 1975. The AA/FA full fields of all nitro cars. I'd get home all covered in rubber, eyes red from the nitro. The Mob, The Green Mamba. Was living the dream. Congrats to the team. Tim Wilkerson is a class act.

Been out of the game a long time now.I was on a Pro/Stock team 96-97 when I met Tim, straight up awesome guy! So happy for him and this accomplishment!

Hot rods from hell!!!! Fuel altered has always been my favorite class in drag racing. Never thought I'd see a 4 second pass from one the way they are all over the track.

@@pappav77 yes, that's true, nobody is Hendrix. But the guy who's not an American above probably had no idea that's what he was trying to replicate. If you've never heard Hendrix play it and then hear that, you think it's a complete mess.

Strange, yesterday I saw this car run a 4.something at 304 mph and that was the world record. Now what is it???
This was the first run in the fours. The car ran two passes, both were 4.920 seconds. The first was 296mph, the second was 304mph.

Very cool. So the car is a TF Funny car with an altered body on it right? So the biggest difference is the loss of downforce from the FC body. Could be what caused it to start smoking the tires at 1/2 track?

What are the differences or restrictions between a AA/FA and a AA/FC?
An AA/FA requires an altered style body. They are the same chassis, but radically different aerodynamics.
@@LivingNitro I made that assumption. The question I have arises more to the engine. Are they allowed to be or, are they the same as a top fueler or funny car. I suppose I ask more because they don't run near the same et's as a TF or FC. Are they limited in motor or fuel? It might be they have more methanol in the mixture. I think the chassis appears to be a funny car without the body but, why can't they make a faster pass if having the same motor?
@@whizwerx This one is effectively a Top Fuel/Funny Car motor. It's slightly older gear they are running though. Actually, we just posed a video where Richard explains some of that - a lot of the car was made up of spare parts!

An altered has less aerodynamics than a Funny Car. No one has ever pushed this kind of car as quickly before.

An Altered is a front engine, short wheelbase chassis, with an open body. They have reduced aerodynamics compared to a Funny Car.

What does "fuel altered" mean?
Fuel is a drag racing term for nitro. An altered is a front engine, short wheelbase chassis, with an open body.

That is NOT a "Fueled Altered"... they have stretched the wheelbase to a Top Fuel RAIL. Shorten it up by 4 or 5 feet, stick the engine back just in front of the drivers feet...like legit vintage fuel altered were...see if the klutz can even break 275 at 6 seconds. Mph and ET should not be recorded as a record run. Checkout the former record holders car...yep, a legit vintage appearing built and designed fuel altered. This is such a bogus car...like drilling out a baseball bat and filling it with lead...then saying the MLB batter set a new record of 1000 yard home run. BS.
😲 Wow.😲. What a weird thing to gripe about and your analogy is equally weird. Doubtful if anyone feels the same way about this as you do, however I could be wrong. I would not consider myself a race car enthusiast, but I did enjoy watching this accomplishment as it appears most other commentators too.
So, despite the contrary, I think a "that aboy" is in order. The Negative Nancy vibes seem to be skewed a little bit with funny car nostalgia hangover bias. Kinda like Jimmy Hendrix (died Sept 18,1970) playing the Star Spangle banner in the year 2021. It's not going to happen again. Once in life time "experience.". Here today....gone tomorrow. Purple Haze "Nitro" style.
With that said, congrats car racing enthusiasts. Awesome accomplishment. I suppose it's like breaking the 4 minute run mile for the first time as Roger Bannister did on May 6, 1956 with a time of 3.59.4 seconds. Cool. Very "Nitro" (Bannister) cool. 👍🏆⭐🆒
