Richard Hartman grew up watching the AA/FA legends. Over the years he has driven Nitro Funny Cars, as well as tuned and crewed with many teams. He had a dream, a vision of a modern day Fuel Altered. Together with NHRA Nitro Funny Car team owner and driver Tim Wilkerson, the dream was made a reality. The pair achieved the first four second run in Altered history, followed by the first 300mph. Here is their story.
NHRA needs to bring this class back. Congratulations guy's on this historic run💪💯💯💯
This or have a Nostaglia funny car class.
Absolutely! Way more fun to watch then Pro Stock or Pro Stock Motorcycle
Even a once a year exhibition, at the US Nationals or something, would be really cool!
@@LivingNitro - see my other post. Car needs to be at the NHRA Hot Rod Reunion races! Would be cool to get both cars there for match races!
Yeah basically a funny car without the body, but damn that was awesome.
Please, please NHRA make this a pro class.
Love these guys! 💪
Altereds at Irwindale in '71
I was there.
Yea baby 👍👍
As a fellow altered driver, this is something to aspire to. Congratulations
The world is a better place with more altereds.
Awesome, would love to see this class in NHRA!
I’m 76 so I remember the FA’s of old. Am I the only one that see todays fuel altered’s as funny cars without tops.
I’m 72, and they sure have changed from the Days when I started watching in the late 60’s. Like almost everything else, things change, and mainly for safety.
Congrats Richard..Enjoyed working with you on Bruce's car. Class act and wish I would of stayed around.
I can appreciate the feelings... we sat on the AA/FA record for years (Phoenix FA) I had the privilege to work with Ron Fassl and Amos Satterlee for nearly a decade and learned an awful lot.. Ron and Amos had spoken of you guys and am happy you mention them in the history of AA/FA... Tear em up guys... I can appreciate the "Nostalgia" FA but my heart lies with the "Modern"
Loved watching you guys run at Boise! Ron was way ahead of his time for sure. Had he not had the crash I bet he would have been the first to 300! And yes nostalgia is cool but the "transformer" big show style AA/FA will always be my favorite
@@timwallacemotorsports Boise was always fun.... The night we went off the big end and plowed that field was tough.. But what was cool were the horde of fans that helped us clean the car up while I got the fuel tank fixed.. Could not have done it without the help from fans..
I grew up with fuel altereds in the mid 60 ‘s my neighbor was the owner of “Pure Heaven 2”. R T Reed was his name we raced OCIR ,Irwindale , and Lions.the car is still in the NHRA museum in Pomona
Funny you say Neighbors, our Neighborhood, was always rumbling with Steve Hair, Mike Sullivan and Sometimes Ed Moore prepping for Fontana push starting on the back street by the Flood canals North San Bernardino Nothing like a fuel engine at Midnight I was in Highschool
great work by Wilco and crew....super nice car...looks so so racy.
Excellent! Steve Evans said back in the 80s... "Richard Hartman rarely has an uneventful run."
I love how the run with you two was basically "I've got a crazy idea that's gonna cost a lot of money" And they're like "Hey! I have the same crazy idea that costs a lot of money!" And you both are just like "Sweet! Let's do crazy shit together!" and we all get to watch and cheer.
Love Tim Wilkerson! One hell of a nice guy! Sold me a set of Pistons years ago that had a few runs on them.
That car is so beautifully dialed in.
I liked the channel
Cool how the car looks a little retro with the front wheels and extra cowlings
It defies all and goes faster 👍🏻
I still got goose bumps watching them make that record pass again! Seeing it here doesn't produce NEAR the emotion and excitement as it did saturday when being there to see it happen in person. Excellent job yall!! That was a solid stick and move from the whole team right down to the driver. Thanks for making that day extra special for me and my family more than you know.
Always loved this class, right from the wild willie winged express days? Nothing more explosive, than a short wheelbased blown hemi, not the fastest, but damn, the most exciting? Yeah boi
Nothing thumps your chest like a nitro burning engine. I love how you can tell the moment they stop bottle feeding the engine alcohol and it starts running on basically pure nitro haha
I remember altered bleach burnouts when I was a kid in texas...crazy! You guys took me back... Thank you and big congratulations!
Being there to witness it was amazing first time iv ever seen any car go over 300
Glad you got to see it!
Richard and Tim are my heroes. Good to hear the whole story and watch their progress.
that's a perfect example of AMERICAN ingenuity!! making dreams come alive, well done!!
Great job to Richard and Tim and the team who assembled and service this car! The Hartman family is awesome. They deserve all the great things that come their way. I have been fortunate to work with them over the years. Worked for Virgil from 02-04 on his Top Fuel cars. Was so lucky to get to know Richard and his family through the years. Great racer, and awesome family man!
Drag racing needed this. Congratulations to everyone involved. 🔥
Totally awesome 👏 and I love all this. I’m so amazed and I hope I can see this car run in person. This is so cool 😎! Great job for everyone on the crew for making this happen 👍🏻!
I really hope they get to run the car again too.
Congrats to Tim Wilkerson Richard Hartman and crew. That's one bad fuel Altered.
Been saying this for years! NHRA bring back the fuel altereds! Even Ron Capps races them! Them and Ron Fissel, Ricky Ruiz, Nevada rattler, Alaskan grizzly, the mob, Texas ranger, baboon, pure hell, etc... this would add so much to the NHRA National events!!! Come on guys!!!😉👍
Love the way the camera " gives up" at the end.
@Better Time Yeah you really should see it moving backwards before getting in front of it!
Nice intro music and snipits, nice 👍, good job summit racing, thank you summit, and I remember the Irwindale reunion at my track LACR, with Bernie long John that was a lot f years I helped out when he needed me, , nice thanks BigAl California.
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome. Being an ex drag racer, the ride description had me on the edge. Lol shame the camera couldn't handle the SPEED.
BIG congrats to Richard & Tim, and the whole crew!! 👍👍👍🥳. My first drag race attended was 1965, Irwindale....8 TF FED's, 8 AA/FA's...and I was hooked. 55+ years later I still am, and love racing the Heritage Series 😎
Nitro gets you for life!
I have never seen a car hit the high side of the fuel system like that it’s a total different beast when he hits the high side just before staging the car. Normally you can hear it change the tone but this car hits so hard it rocks back and forth lol that’s awesome
Good pick up!
It is now 2023, but, All I can say is, Amazing video of hitting the 300 mph mark for your Dragster.
Thanks for the video and take care.
Congrats to the Hartman and Wilkerson Crew on a bada$$ run. I have many childhood memories of The Hartman's running @ then Firebird (wildhorsepass) in Phoenix of both Richard and Rhonda in Corvette bodied Funny Cars. And Ron Fassl in "The Phoenix" Funny Car and AA/FA was a staple at all the summer events like The Coors 32 funny car he really could put on a show good times!!
Sometimes I get bored and I watch the NHRA racing but I like it I used to go with my husband RoyRodriguez to the Alamo motor complex but not anymore since I got separated I haven't gone to the races but pretty soon I'll go back thanks NHRA and come back to San Antonio Texas 210 baby
Aww I haven't been to the races in yes either maybe one day we can go
-Mind blown. I must have been under a rock during this project. Congrats!
WOW!!! Thank you for posting this video.
Thank you 'Living Nitro',, this was an excellent video. It was awesome to witness the guys go 4:92 @3:04! They'll be back to go deeper into the 4's and faster. Yes, I clicked that LIKE and subscribed!!
Thanks for subscribing, it really helps the channel.
Indeed Fuel Altereds have been fan favorites since they first showed up at drag strips in the 60's with the Winged Express likely being the most famous. Seeing these guys keep the dream alive and run amazing modern day speed and ET is AWESOME!! I join all others in hoping NHRA take a look at these guys and consider the fans, bring back Altereds and Gassers!!
I watched the really wild crazy altereds run. I'm talking about Pure Heaven and Pure Hell among many others. That was the most insane crazy fast hand full I've ever seen. Those cars were all over the track. It took real steel ones to drive those! You have accomplished something that I never thought would happen. Congratulations on the accomplishment. Well deserved!
Altereds are the wildest.
Congratulations, what a run!!
Cool beans!! I’ve loved fuel altereds since the mid sixties. Congratulations 🍾
Most likely the last major milestones fueled by nitro we will see in our lifetime (I'm 53). Fuel altereds has been a favorite since a young boy and wish NHRA would give them a competitive class like the promods. Congratulations all that was badass!!!!!!
That would be incredible to see. Maybe they could run the class at the US Nationals as a special one-off.
Congratulations! Love what you’ve done! My name is Scott Smeaton and when I was younger I had. A similar dream / concept for a Fuel Altered... thanks to Phillip iller and technical input from Doug Kruse the THE MOB flip top funny car inspired bodied car with a chassis came to be! Seeing your car put a big smile on my car.
Very cool!
Growing up AA/FA were so Bad Azz! Absolutely awesome what your vision and team were able to accomplish. 👍👍🇺🇸🏁
Great video! Chaos Texas was the best race I have ever been to!!! Can't wait until 2022!!
i was there.i know people have said this is not a true fuel altered.i don't care, it was outstanding!
I have no idea where this channel came from but I am SO glad I found it. Fantastic work!
We're new around here haha. Thank you for subscribing and we look forward to bringing you lots more drag racing!
@@LivingNitro I just happened upon your channel during downtime at the track last weekend and it's instantly to the top of the list for me.
Thank you for mentioning Ron fassl. 💯 name... would have been cool in the video to have the old guys from Boise and fire Red raceway runs...like Mac McCord... Ed moore.... Ray higley.... Tim Bennett..... The list goes on and on but congrats on doing the 300-mph hour pass...💯
Kind of think it was perfect the way the camera just reached to the sky in the end :-) Damn, what a great video!!
Thanks! We will say it was intentional 😂
That is amazing. Congratulations to all involved,Woo!
Such a beautiful story and video. Thank you for this. I often wonder... if AA/FA was still an NHRA class (as I so wish it was) and all of the sponsored money, effort and time were put into it that are put into Funny Car and Top Fuel, I wonder what kind of E.T. and top speeds they would be capable of? Thank you again for this wonderful video.
Love the paint, beautiful car guys!
We agree! Thanks for being a subscriber.
LOVE IT LOVE IT, outstanding job to you and the crew, and you talk about women in sports. Its so great to see how excited they were when you ran that 304
Very cool video, Congrats to Tim and Richard
Just pure bad assery right there!
I love it!! NHRA really needs pull their heads out of their asses and bring exciting cars like this to their events
The NHRA have some really cool cars too. That said, this Altered would certainly be awesome to see at one of their events.
Tim Wilkerson is a nice guy for doing this and good things come to nice people
Congratulations to everyone involved! Quite an accomplishment. I was wondering when this would happen.
NHRA is on Notice, Fans loved this! REMIX TIME... 😂... THIS was the coolest thing ever.
Great Job fellas Awesome video, beautiful altered...
Glad you enjoyed it
Really enjoyed that. Congratulations to all involved
The AA-FA class would get the crowds back at NHRA events!
Hell yeah!
Absolutely, me included. Imo, Pro Stock should just go away.
Really appreciate the talk over vedio...really informative 👍
Glad you liked it
This class is like manhandling a wheelbarrow down the track while it has a running nitro engine in it .. Wild willie would be proud
Pro Wheelbarrow!
Love the "March meet" ! But this is special ! Cool 😀
Yes it was!
Would love to see fuel altereds regularly here in the UK. But only one I know of is Havoc,& the owner has retired it,no one knows if that's permanently, hopefully not, awesome machine.
Fantastic journey!!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great job Wilki. Back in the day you would get used parts from the big funded teams, then turn around and beat them with their old parts.now that's using your noggin. JERSEY Bill
Lmao you got that right he bought a set off of Force then hauled ass while John went up in smoke!
Question for ya'll? At the 14:25 mark the guy standing next to the car was pointing down towards the blower as if he was relaying something to you as the driver or something else. What adjustment was he wanting made there. Thanks. And this video is great can't wait to show it to my dad.
This needs to be a class !
I didn’t realize your allowed to use the term user friendly when you are referring to a fuel altered .
Guess I was wrong , Great Job !
I smell a new class that may wake NHRA events up!!!
I would love to see it a couple of times a year!
Was there for Q1 Friday Night
After he shut it off, I knew they'd Hit 300 Saturday!
Awesome runs all weekend.
Eyes wide and mouth open this whole segment. This is how drag racing used to be and should be. Tim Wilkerson.....what a guy, loved this! If anyone can answer, what % nitro would you use for these motors?
Somewhere between 80 and 90%.
anyone else watched this more than once? 😊🤘🏻
That thing is a beast. Imagine if they had some time to pick at it
How damn cool; just to do it, throwback.
The camera getting pushed up, that was the shot!
That was cool AF.
Awesome job guys
Awesome stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it
If i remember correctly it was one armed wild willie borsch at the fremont raceway in the 60s that always drove off the race track in one these cars
Well done Cheers
When you're so fast the GoPro can't handle it.
True that!
The GoPro handled it , it just wasn’t secured tight enough
Just plain cool.
Such a beast.
Oh, super video!!!! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
So its a funny car chassis, engine with a clutch management system, you put a Bantam body on it a make a pass and you are faster than a real traditional AA/FA. Great, so proud of you.
You seem jealous and triggered. He literally mentioned doing things the way he did, out of respect for those classes. Dont worry old timer, he isn't trying to change your repetitive old program. A true drag racing enthusiast is proud of this team. A grumpy old turd is jealous and triggered.
If you can not see the significance of a 300mph run in anything? sorry for you.. Having run one of these cars for almost 10 years? That sir is impressive... hate like you need to but it takes a class act and serious skills to push on of these "Modern" AA/FA to that kind of speed and ET..
Did you forget to take your pills today? Haters gotta hate I guess.
thank you for posting this it reminds me of long time ago with fueled Alters as young man mid 70s Wide World of Sports had everything drag racing NASCAR my introduction to sports a fuel altered car for drag racing was always the meanest thing in the world better than a funny car myself thank you for showing me your car because the front end I would use like a old dirt track racing Ford front end from the 20 30s I would put covers over the tires with probably canards more Formula 1 sports car stuff you know to help keep the front end down that would look cool you got front fenders they're called Wings old school that's kind of the way I would put my front end he could put canards on front side pods of that Ford Dirt Track racer Grill also more downforce on the front figure out the Wing a little better you could put some canards on the rear side panels also in front of the rear tires that might help us migi antique wedge body top fuel drag racers the Mongoose and the snake and yes that's the most important thing ball last one oh my God I'm not even doing this college at you make headed thank you for bringing the show back to the drag races Tom the mongoose the trick Camaro the Mustang stuff like that it's all sport no show anymore Grudge matches pay maybe not you guys so much but they bring in the crowd back the designing ever think about using a couple different wings like in Formula 1 start thinking about something of that designed to break the air in front of the tire
Amen!
Check out the Alaska Grizzley at Ak.Raceway Park. In Alaska. AAfuel altered.
Would love to see that track one day.
Sweet sad things badass ride got to be scary oh God bless you
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is awesome!!!
So cool.
Art
Is there any difference between the engine on this car and the ones used in the nitro funny cars? The only difference I can see is the injector hat isn't quite as tall.
Awesome !!!
Awesome
I really wish they would bring this class back to the NHRA
Ha! The No fun Hot Rod Association? Never gonna happen.
Very Awesome!
Looks alot like a funny car with a different body. So they threw some top fuel aero on it? Nutt birds.
The faster 1/4in the world 304mph 4.92seconds just fantastic
Are these the cars from before the change to rear engine top fuel??
