Jim Stafford Boogie Woogie Guitar Tribute to Pinetop Perkins

- On his Oct. 2019 Branson show Jim played boogie woogie on guitar. He explained how in his youth he once performed with Muddy Waters and Pinetop Perkins in Washington DC. Pinetop was his inspiration in the boogie woogie style. Jim's talent and skill is on display in this number. You must see him in Branson. He alone is worth the trip. Twice I drove 17 hours just to see him. My wife came this time and loved it.
Thirty years ago I went to Stroud's Chicken in Kansas City. There was an elderly piano player who was playing brilliantly for the folks in the waiting room and nobody was paying any attention. We struck up a conversation. I was shocked at how well he played and asked his name. When he told me it was Pinetop Perkins it was almost more than I could handle. He told me all about his involvement with the Blues Foundation and a whole lot of other things that I have since forgotten. Such a sweet and gentle, engaging and friendly man.
I 'm 71 and have seen Mr. Stafford play and listened to his reçordings and enjoyed them all. First time I have heard him do the boogie and I think he did an excellent job. Grand performer.
this man is a legend and we should all appreciate his guitar and showmanship skills .
You are correct, sir.
WOW! That is some serious talent.
What an amazing musician!
One of the most underrated talents in the music industry. That was righteous fellow babies. God Bless Jim Stafford.
My respect just went through the roof for Mr Stafford!
You betcha!
Never saw Mr. Stafford in person, but did see Pinetop in NY about 25 years ago. Awesome!
An unrecognized "Legend"!!!
I live near Branson and every time family comes to visit we recomend Jim's show if he's im town. His best wecever saw was aboutv8 years ago when we were foster parents. He put on a free show for all local foster parents and kids plus a few other groups. There was a good " finger food" buffet before the show. He had 2 other young guitarists, both excellent, with him on stage. He joked around a little as usual, but then opened up playing the boogie woogie and it was much more detailed and complicated thsn this version. Then the 3 played several songs concert style; each carrying a different line blended together to form one song. Went on for about an hour. Best I'd heard him or any other play in my lifetime. Wish they'd recorded it so I could replay it today.
Great entertainer, loved his tv show. Thanks
A talent unknown. Where you guys dig this up is remarkable. Short , but quality always beats quantity. What a refreshing thing to find at the end of the day.
It was my pleasure to capture his performance and to share his musical and comedic talent. He's a helluva nice guy to talk to too.
@@TolKOZAK Wow, I didn't realize YOU recorded it and were there LIVE. GOD is Great and Life Is Great and meant to live every day for the best. Your response answer like icing on a cake. I got a simple old blues line for you. You won't miss the cake till its ate. Thanks again.
@@w.h.simpson6465 Cheers from Canada
That was awesome. Thank you, Mr Jim Stafford
Great guitarist. A poor man's Glen Campbell, a rich man's Roy Clark. Or something like that. I've often wished that Mr. Stafford and Mr. Ray Stevens weren't so danged funny. I feel like their showmanship distracted the focus on their very substantial musical talent. We're blessed that both men are still with us.
IDNKT Stafford was bornded in Branson, MO before Branson was Branson.
One of the great guitarist!
Our entire family really liked Jim Stafford. He was a handsome dawg in addition to his entertainment skills.
this was great. that was an awesome arrangement. what a story about hanging with Muddy and Pinetop.fine job Mr Stafford.
Jim Stafford is an amazing musician! Its wonderful to hear him play. Thank you for posting this video! 👍
Truly a master of his craft and one of the best guitarists I have ever had the pleasure of seeing perform.
I have seen Jim 5 times. He is amazing. I wish I could have seen Roy Clark or Glen Campbell live. They would be ranked #1 and #2 in my opinion. (And Jim's)
@@TolKOZAKhave we forgotten Chet Atkins? ❤
Sure and Les Paul too.@@Guitarplayer724
Jim Stafford is a great picker.
this guy is so talented
Jim, I gave you a piano lesson at your Hollywood home near the Hollywood Bowl, in about 1973 or 1974. It was right after Spiders and Snakes, and it was before your ABC Television show. I saw you use one of the piano flourishes I showed you on that television show. You were and still are a consummate entertainer. Audiences love you and you love them and it shows! Thank you for being my friend. The way we met, I had a big notice (:Now you can learn to play FUNKY PIANO etc"on the bulletin board at Wallich's Music City on Sunset and you must've grabbed it off the wall. I think your secretary called me to set it up.
What a nice sentiment to share. I loved reading your story. I agree with you. I had a chance to meet with him 3 times. To quote Ed Sullivan, " He's a fine, decent boy."
That big old sack-o-Wildwood-seeds finally germinated, and look at you now!
That's some fine pickin'!!!
Very glad you are still performing. :-)
Not only is Jim Stafford he is hairisouly funny, he's also very very very talented. Love his music!!!!!!!

Jim Stafford had a great regular TV show I watched when I was a kid in Georgia where he shined his ability to be the Great vaudevillian Entertainer. He had a natural singing style with great lyrics and spooky slide and wha wha guitar. He had some song like ,"What if the swamp crawled up your pipes came out your water spout and told you you move out!"
A lot of talented musicians had TV shows back then. Roy Clark on Hee Haw, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, Jimmy Dean. Plus those shows brought new talent to the stage. Miss all that.
That song is called "The Last Chant" from his first album "Jim Stafford" :)
Thanks! I'm going to look up that Stafford song, chant, learn it I'm playing in my bands sooner not to later gator
Blackwater Hattie lived back n the swamp, where the strange green reptiles crawled
He is a phenomenally talented player
Such a handsome and talented man. Love watching these videos! Such a great voice and amazing quitarist!
just ace int he
I don't like Peopel how speak so much,Iike Peopel how to it good things,Words are like smoke afther sommes Moment is nothings
This was good listening. Pinetop and Muddy doing 'Caledonia' is stellar, though. Thanks :)
That was good and funny. You definitely played that boogie and the woogie. I love the humor and that was some fine picking. 👍👍👍
Oh yeah! So nice.
That's the way that's done thanks Jim Stafford
❤ Just so much talent ❤
Awesome guitarist, big fan of nylon strings too! Jim and nylon strings are under estimated
when people talk about all these great guitar pickers people tend to forget about guys like Mr Stafford and John Sebastian but the real problem is there are just so many great insane pickets to keep track of and one of the All Time Greats is 15 years old sitting in his bedroom picking up a storm and busting strings
Love that Jim..saw him in Branson,oh so funny,I even got hit with a cow patty
Loved PineTops work with Muddy I'm ready dame right i is
That is technically amazing.
Play the dam thang
Love Jim Stafford
You and me both.
TolKOZAK Jim Stafford has got it all.
I have appreciated this man's guitar talent for years..a mean Classical Gas too.(Smothers Brothers comedy hour)
He has written some amazing songs also...
Perhaps because he is incredibly funny, he is not fully recognized for his musical ability..go Jim !
Saw him live in Kitchener Ontario Canada a long time ago
You're kidding! That's where I saw him for the first time. It was a fall fair or something. Had to go to Branson to see him again... 3 times.
The man is legend.
Yup
just amazing
Hes amazing. Love him.
He's excellent 👌
He looks great.
Fantastic love it.
He's good enough to do it. Just like that! Jerry Reed, too.
Id give my pinkies to be able to play like that, but then I couldnt play like that lol
I'm sure he was at least, if the best picker ever.
The Cellar Door! Gatton played there regularly.
Great as always.
Very clever guitarist. Nice work.
I saw Pine top at the Montreal Jazz fest in the 1990s. He was great. He was in Muddys band. I also saw Honeyboy Edwards as well. You could hear the wind of the Delta coming outa his fingers. He was on the road with Robert Johnson when ZRobert got poisoned and died.
Je suis de Montreal.
Je suis un Queblokecois. Lol.
Maudit Anglais. (I left in 1967)@@johngore7744
@@TolKOZAK and we were all glad you left blow me
Blow you? I'm really glad I left.@@johngore7744
Fantastic.
Jim is the genuine article!
I was taught that Pinetop's Boogie was from much earlier and from Henry 'Pinetop' Smith...
You are correct!
The boogie and the woogie.
This guy is good!
Brilliant comment. I got one too...
This man plays the guitar.
Please -Please-Jim come to Ontario Canada !!!!!!!!!!
He stay in Branson these days.
AWESOME! Thanks for that Tol. Jim Stafford isn't properly appreciated for the absolute Master Guitar Player that he is! GIMME MORE MAN!!
You have great taste.
I think his Branson theater didn't survive covid. I really appreciate Roy Clark, Jim, Glen Campbell and others who show off this skill. Didn't as a kid (except for the few times I caught Hee Haw).
Wow!
Turns out he had another hand up his sleeve !
Wow!!!
Bless you my son.
This goes to show that Stafford is not all "Spiders And Snakes" and "Wildwood Weed".
I’ve never heard of Jim doing boogie songs
There is very little Jim cannot play.
fun fact: Pine did not reach his 90s until long after Muddy Waters had "taken the west bound"
Genius.
What. The Cow Patty guy from "Any Which Way You Can" can do this?! Didn't see that coming, at all.
He is a very talented (and under rated) guitar player. Pretty funny too.
It ain't boogie-woogie, but Stevie Ray Vaughn played rhythm and lead at the same time, which is a lot like what Stafford's doing, here.
The original “Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie” was written by Clarence “Pinetop” Smith, not the longtime piano player for Muddy Waters, named “Pinetop” Perkins.
Thank you for your information. However, at no point does Jim say Perkins originated Boogie Woogie. He just says, "he nailed it' and in his opinion it's "the main boogie woogie".He is simply trying to show his respect for the man.
@@TolKOZAK You’re welcome. I understand Jim’s positive intentions.
Great playin ! Is this the spiders n snakes musician?
Yessir
great
Somehow his comedy overshadowed his guitar playing, although most musicians totally understood he's an excellent guitarist!
You are correct, sir. Sober mind, too.
@Huawei is a criminal organization. Chuck was fantastic, but the only good humour I can recall was "My Ding-a-Ling".
He needs to give Buster B Jones credit. Buster has a tutorial and teaches the Buster B Boogie. That is where this is from
Jim is not above giving credit where credit is due. However, in a 90 minute show there is only so much talking you can do. The show is about his sense of humour and musical talent. He did thank his mother once and all the little people.
Thought I heard it.
What guitar is that?
Yak yak yak yak yak yak yak yak yak yak
Some people don't appreciate humour. I find that funny.
Never got his due as a musician in my opinion.
In my humble opinion, right up there, close to the likes of the incredibly talented Roy Clark and Glen Campbell.
@@TolKOZAK Let's not forget Jerry Reed
@@zulumax1 When You're Hot, You're Hot, when you're right, you're right.
Both Jim Stafford and Jerry Reed were under appreciated as musicians. Perhaps it was their comedic style, both were show men as well. Still have my original 45 of Spiders and Snakes. Doesn't show off his talent as a guitarist and neither did Wildwood Weed.
I agree, Stafford and Perkins
Ĵim my friend😊
Go cat go!
All due reverence for the great Pinetop Perkins, but it's Pinetop Smith's Boogie rocking 1928.
I had no idea Jim Stafford was a serious guitarist.
He is very much a guitarist. He's just not that serious, most of the time.
Where is middle c on the guitar ?
I think Jim took it out and put it on his banjo which some experts say is not really a banjo. I dunno. I just like to listen to him play and talk.
I never knew he was married to Bobbie Gentrey !!!
Jim was married to her until he saw " she and Billie Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"
@@TolKOZAK lol
Somebody should teach this guy how to play guitar! Seriously! Come on man! Think about it!
I really had to think hard about what you said, Dizzle. I think you have 'issues'.
@@TolKOZAK
I’d like to see him try to play this !!
🤣🤣
Now if he use his index finger, it would be something. is he a comedian with a guitar or a guitarist cracking jokes?
While I'm not a real psychologist (I do play one on youtube) my diagnosis is he grew up as a shy, sensitive child with a whack of musical talent, who covered up the talent by being a wise guy. That'll be $100.
it's Pinetop SMITH, not Pinetop Perkins.
That was the name Pinetop used when checking in at hotels.
Is this the same Jim Stafford that sang "Suspicion", back in the day? Does anyone know?
That was his evil twin Terry.
@@TolKOZAK lol, Of course, thank you so much, I knew that, my recall just wasn't working. lol One of my favorite songs, he sounded a lot like Elvis in this song, IMO.
Pinetop was good. However he was no template for boogie Woogie piano. Templates: Albert Ammons, Meade lux Lewis, Pete Johnston and later Otis Spann Oscar Peterson or Professor Longhair and more recently Dr. John.
He forgot to mention that each hand has at least five digits, sometimes more.😳🙄🤔

Jim should know better. Perkins co-opted Smith's name and song.
@M Fisher Well, he's been in show biz long enough to know who wrote what - especially something he plays. The least he could do is relay the facts to his audience.
Kootchie, kootchie.
The term Boogie Woogie was invented by Clarence "Pinetop" Smith, NOT PERKINS! He wrote the song Pinetop's Boogie Woogie in Chicago in 1928 and that is where the term came from. Jim, you need to do your homework before spouting off in public.
You seem to have some kind of 'issues'. If you had simply stated what you know about the Pinetops, I would leave it alone. But you had to go on about 'doing homework' and spouting off' so I feel compelled to set you straight. English may not be your first language so I will go easy on you. You're a doofus. Jim never said Pinetop Perkins invented the term Boogie Woogie. HE SAID," Pinetop Perkins is the main Boogie Woogie.' (His opinion) and "Pinetop boogie became the template." (His opinion) "Perkins just nailed it." Either you have selective hearing or some personal dislike. Either way you owe an apology to Perkins and Stafford.
Play...... you speake to much
It's called "humour". Look it up. Jim is a comedian. They tend to talk to pass on their humour. I know this is difficult to understand. Maybe ask your mommy.
Aaah ok
Quite a few timing issues.
Yeah. You'll have to work on that.
Boogie woogie country blues its got the lot :)
