I was introduced to this song by one of my young students who was very polite and quiet. She was 11 yrs old at that time, her parents were divorced and she stayed with her mother, has no contact what so ever with her father. All what she remembered from her father is that he used to sing this song to her until she sleeps. She said Ms. Would you listen to this song ? .. don't worry if you don't understand french, you will feel it.
And it's true, I felt amazing.
Much love to her 💕 i hope she got the chance to meet with him again ..

Wow!! Somehow, I have awayss known this song, especially the melody...but, I never knew what it was titled! So, this is a special day for me, as I now have the opportunity to learn the lyrics eventually!

Thank you so much for the lyrics and translation : ) We have just spent Sunday in the wonderful town of Chartres where mon amour chose this beautiful tune from all the music boxes for sale by the cathedral. The highlight of our short but sweet (and his first) visit to France was wandering by the river and through the old town listening to this melody over and over.... We have been together nearly 24 years but I know that from now on this will be "our" song. Vivre la france, vivre la vie en rose!

I served in this french departement, I have visited many cathedral (Paris, le Mans, Trier (Trêves) etc... and indeed Chartres is particular and pretty)... Historically, Chartres was the post where Jean Moulin was serving in 1940 as Préfet (representant of the french gouvernment in every departement, highest civil authority then)... Jean moulin refused to sign a paper to Germans authorising thme to execute french african soldiers because of invented facts... he eventually evade after his refusal and his arrestation and join De Gaulle in London, then took the heavy charge to unite all french resistance movements from extreme-right to extreme left, not an easy task, but he succeeded anyway... Leader of the french interior resistance, he was captured, tortured and died without having given a word on his brother in arms. :)

Hold me close and hold me fast
    The magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose
When you kiss me, Heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see la vie en rose
When you press me to your heart
    I'm in a world apart
    A world where roses bloom
    And when you speak
    Angels sing from above
    Everyday words
Seems to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
    And life will always be
    La vie en rose
When you press me to your heart
    I'm in a world apart
    A world where roses bloom
    And when you speak
    Angels sing from above
    Everyday words
Seems to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
    And life will always be
    La vie en rose

I used to listen to the song without seeing the lyric. And just write what the song sounds like in a note. And then i will match them with the actual lyric. It helps me to sing the song.
Now i have duo lingo and youtube. Haha

Deirdre Coulter there’s part of the song with YT channel & title: “ ‘French at Home with Steph’ la vie en rose.” What I did was write down the French on one line, on the 2nd line I put the phonetic spelling of the French & on the 3rd line I copied the English. It took hours...I had watched about 8 videos! Some are a bit different both in the French wording & the French pronunciation...

  • @yju135
    @yju135  12 років тому +47

That's right. It literally means that. :)
I'm not an expert in the language and I don't pretend to be, but since this line is in the same verse of the song where the guy or girl you love utters words of love to you, surely it would touch you right in the heart? lol Anyway the song is like a poetry where it doesn't always mean literally that way. It's how you interpret it right?

I was just in Paris the last week of September. As we walked up to the Louvre from the Tuelleries Gardens, there was a man playing this song on his accordion at the arches, out in front! I went to him, gave him a tip, and thanked him for playing my favorite French song! He gave me a perfect moment I will always cherish/remember! ♡

      • Len Is Shook • That was an English adaptation of the lyrics, to where they’d take the original translation and try to match it with the rhythm and meaning of it. They do this because sometimes phrases are either too long or too short, or they’re lost in translation, so they replace it with lyrics that are different but still mean essentially the same thing.
