Just love what appears to be self- orchestrated group of craftspeople producing such a wonderful thing with such, what we would call today, privative tools.

forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question, but when theres a continuous line of nails in line with the grain of the wood as on this nailed planking, what prevents there being a weak spot and a tendency to split along that nail line?
And what do the builders do to prevent the end grain on the planks splitting when its nailed to the stem post (?) and stern post (?) I'm not trying to be clever or critical, just a non-boatbuilder asking how the boat builders overcome that problem!

The rings of the wood are often different if you relate to old and narrow trees, the builders follow the lines and never put a nail in the same lines, in sweden we have lines very near to eatch others, never put a nail in the same line, is it ok my friend?

Thanks for your answer...Seems like in boatbuilding, as in other wood working disciplines, knowing how to read the wood structure and cooperate with it is of vital importance!

To me it's a rather easy choice: Do you want to have tar enough or do you want to sink? No tar? Stay on land. Your choice.
