    Respectfully disagree. The Sony 15/1.4 is smaller then the Sigma 24/2, let alone the 16mm. The Sony 11/1.8 is a small wonder. Both Sigma and Sony have really small high quality wide angle zooms that cannot be matched by full frame lenses. The bodies are smaller to. Adding price, and APS-C is a great small and cheap alternative. I take out my A7r4 for the highest quality and my A6400 for the most fun with APS-C lenses.

      APSC lenses are great, I just think Sony needs some more compact f2 primes. How is there no 27mm f2.8 pancake for Sony APSC or a 18mm f2?
      The Sony 15mm f1.4 is probably fantastic but still over priced in my opinion

      @@gerardneedham Depend. Sony 15mm F1,4 almost twice lighter (any gimbal accepting) and much smaller than Sigma 16.

      APSC (a6700) bodies and the A7C bodies weigh exactly the same. So forget that.
      The Sony 15mm 1.4 costs 630 EUR, which makes it even more expensive than the Sigma 24 2.0
      Agree on the Sony 11 1.8. It's really a gem. Unfortunately never had a use for that wide of a focal length myself

      @@DDHDTV the A6700 is lighter: 514gr for the A7cII and 493gr for the A6700. But that is so little difference it is almost the same. And yes, the Sigma 24/2.0 is almost €150,- cheaper then the Sony 15/1.4 over here a.t.m., but the A6700 is €700,- cheaper. So, the A6700 with 15/1.4 is €550,- cheaper then the A7cII with the Sigma 24mm.
      Yeah, have to love that 11mm and yeah, that 15mm should be cheaper. I feel for a lot of people APS-C is the better compromise. I run both full-frame for "serious work" and APS-C for hikes.

  • @fofopho
    @fofopho 5 місяців тому +20

    A few corrections -
    #1 - full frame doesn’t really affect sharpness, but it can effect noise and relative depth of field. Lens quality and pixel density will determine maximum sharpness. So using the same lens at the base ISO you will get slightly more sharpness from the a6700 than the a7 iii or the a7s iii or even the a9 (I, II, or III). What’s probably affecting your sharpness is the sigma lenses, which are great, but not technically amazing compared to Sony G and G Master offerings.
    #2 - you aren’t experiencing more missed focus because you are using APS-C lenses, you are experiencing more missed focus because you are using third party lenses with slower stepping focus motors. The Sony G aps-c lenses hold up really well compared to the full frame G lenses (but there are obviously no g master tier lenses in the APS-C world).

    • @fofopho
      @fofopho 5 місяців тому +2

      As a note, I have the a6700 as well. I pretty much exclusively use it when I’m shooting in dangerous environments (steel fab shops, blast tents, paint bays, etc) - for basically all of my other work I use the a7 IV and my a7s IIIs. I appreciate using the a6700 and cheaper lenses because I’ve had flying chips of molten metal and fine silica particulates destroy lenses (24-70 g master), camera bodies and tripods - so having a cheaper body and lens in those environments is good for my mental health.

    • @gerardneedham
      @gerardneedham  5 місяців тому

      Even the Sony 15mm F1.4 fir APSC isn’t amazing when you used to Full frame, my A7IV is much sharper than my a6700 and then I recently used a medium format and that is much sharper, the larger the sensor the more detail you get period

    • @plutonium5156

      @gerardneedham stop. You're making things up. My 6700 holds its own against my a7r iii with GM lenses.

    • @fofopho
      @fofopho 3 місяці тому +6

      @@gerardneedham again that’s due to lens quality not the sensor being sharper or something. The a6700, when used with GM glass is sharper than the a7 III OR A7C with the same glass. Certainly more detailed than the a7s III in both photos and videos. My point is that the limiting factor isn’t the “sharpness” of APS-C sensors but rather the glass in front of it. Personally, I basically only use my FF GM glass when I’m shooting with the a6700.

    • @fofopho
      @fofopho 3 місяці тому +3

      @@gerardneedham also, the auto focus on the 15mm G lens tested quite fast in my experience (which was my only contention in the original post). I don’t currently own one, but I’m not fully sure what you are on about. The 15mm holds up very well compared to some of the FF G glass as well.

      @@gerardneedhamthe difference between a cellphone sensor and an APS-C sensor has nothing at all in common with the difference between an APS-C sensor and a full-frame sensor. Try comparing the actual things you're talking about.
      You may also want to look into what image resolution in the files a "100 megapixel" smartphone sensor is actually producing, because they're measuring things differently than real cameras. A 100 megapixel smartphone sensor will give you, at most, a 25 megapixel image file.

      Uh... 100 megapixel is 100 megapixel. If there's a difference in detail, it's the glass you're using. An aps-c lens has to be sharper though since the sensor is smaller. A lens might be perfect for full frame, but not sharp enough for aps-c (with same resolution on the sensors)

    Thank you for the video. Been to Japan many times but never Australia. Live here in the US. I bought a A6700 to try as well. I own many full size full frame Sony cameras but now trying out the A7CII to get a body as small and with the same great sensor as the A7IV which I sold last year. Take a look at it. I’m impressed with its upgraded features over the A7IV even with only one card slot. I do use both Sigma I-Series and the Sony small G lenses on the A7CII to keep it small. On APS-C really like 15mm f;1.4 G Sony. Take care.

    Thanks for the update! Agree that the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 largely defeats the point of aps-c because of its size, especially when when compared to smaller full-frame options. The better option for aps-c is the Sony 15mm f/1.4 g lens! It's an identical focal length and DoF as Sigma 24mm f/2 on full-frame, while being smaller and with flawless autofocus performance. Really wish Sony would make a full f/1.4 lineup of G-series primes for aps-c (much like it did for full-frame with the compact 24mm, 40mm, and 50mm g lenses). That would really allow the a6700 to reach its full potential.

    • @vvlad78
      @vvlad78 4 місяці тому

      For cooking videos you don't need f1.4 lenses for sure. Due to short shooting distances you will get too narrow depth of field. Apertures f2.8-f5.6 will be your best choice for this scenario. Same for aperture specifications, an f/1.4 FE lens is still a f/1.4 lens on a aps-c body. The internal focus specifications may affect their individual performance. • @egotist11
      @egotist11 4 місяці тому +1

      while price doesn't really matter when you can afford it, i'll say weight is a dealbreaker for some.
      for example:
      280g - Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN | C
      371g - Sony FE 85mm f/1.8
      the cropped lens is about 100g lighter, feel like nothing on paper, but carrying it, even a 50g matter, and that's only a f1.8 glass.
      If we're talking about 1.4 head to head:
      280g - Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN | C
      820g - Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM
      plus the body itself you save tons of weight

    I agree with going back to the a7iv. My first camera was an a7Siii and I'm completely spoiled. The covid thing made me sell my a7Slll to pay rent, and now I'm getting the a7iv for sure. The a7Slll shot 4k at 120 fps, but only with the CFexpress "A" cards. SDXC is just fine with either the a7Slll OR the a7iv, (4K@60) There was very little difference between the 4K@ 120 and 4K@60, which made the 200.00 CF Express "A" card superfluous. -Thanks for the hard work and generosity to share your findings...

    Heavily agree with your take on the Sigma 16 1.4. Been using it for ages and never really got warm with it.
    The Sigma 23 1.4 is the reason I'm switching to full frame now. Was waiting for a 35mm equivalent, and when I saw how big and heavy it is (also kinda expensive), I started thinking about FF.
    After our Japan trip, I decided to reduce the kit even further, by using zoom lenses (18-50 2.8) but was not impressed. Well, got my hands on the Sigma 28-70 on an A7C in Japan and was blown away after I saw the pictures at home on the big screen. My APSC sigma lenses where never that sharp.

Valuable heat dissipation tips,a plus. “Secret lens” a tease😊; cute “like button double tap” advice (how about 3 times?😂). Subtle product promotions.
