years ago, I used to fish from a certain bridge you are very close to, down by Big Pine Key. One night, my friend had a 14/0 spooled in one run. I would like to say it was a thousand yards of 80 or 100# line, but we already had some out. It was like hooking a submarine, it just kept going to the Bahamas, did not slow down nor a head shake. Scary! I couldn't make up my mind what it was for years because it wasn't like a tiger and damn sure had more stamina than a typical hammer. Now the sharks have returned after being fished out. @@larryroberts6413 The history is complicated. In general though, the automobile road crossed the gaps between the keys on bridges with enormous boxy wedding-cake pilings connected overhead by arches. Sometime in the 80's they began replacing these with more conventional pilings and a new roadbed. Sometimes they tore out the old structures but often they left them alongside the new ones as fishing piers etc. As someone who has dived every single one of them, I can tell you that the old pilings with their flat shelves underwater were abundant with marine life. This 5 days series is great! The Keys are like a wonderland for fishing. I was just there on vacation and saw several sharks. You never know what you're going to see down there.
I have spearfished under most of the bridges from the 3 mile on down south to Bahia Honda. A couple of years ago I lost a nice grouper to a shark, similar to the one in the video, under the 7 mile bridge. That ended our fishing for that particular day. The problem is that the water is murky under those bridges making it hard for the sharks to distinguish between their natural prey and the spearfisher.
Finally!!! This was so worth the wait! I screamed so loud after that shark attack I startled the whole house! Now, I can start my week thank you for the incredible content fishaholic! Shaka brotha!🤙👍
I’ve fished nearly all the bridges in the lower keys while living on Big Pine Key and the best way I found of keeping the tarpon hook up ratio higher was switching out all trebles on hard plastics or stick baits to very strong extra sharp black nickel or similar single hooks and a stiffer action rod with a good strong mono or braid if you prefer. We preferred 25-30lb mono because when you only have out 20yds casting the stretch is minimal and allows you to get a good hook set but after a 40lb+ tarpon pulls 50-75yds of line off the reel the mono acts like a shock absorber on the powerful crazy jumps and we felt it helped us to stay hooked up even tho tarpon will usually throw the hook more than 50% of the time anyway. However without very strong extra sharp hooks, strong line & stiff rod to initially stick the hook good you won’t have to worry about the crazy tarpon jumps. The Keys are my favorite place to fish, even on bad day you can always find something to catch and on good days the fishings unbelievable.
As long as I could do the cardio, I would make the swim in a heartbeat! I grew up in the keys. Not many "man eaters" normally roam down there. Respect for the kayak fishing though, that is a lot of work.
Another Awesome video. Since I'm a droner now...I Love your drone footage. Filmed many shows, Palm Beach, Florida and at Bud n' Mary's in the Keys when I had my tv show. I love florida fishing. Your narration is great too. You have a great channel.
I'm from South Africa and growing up we used to go fishing off my uncles boat. I was about 14 and never forgot one day about a mile from shore, we'd been fishing for only about 30 mins and the boat was surrounded by mako's and great whites so we relocated. That was quite scary, I'd never fish like you do on that tiny thing :)
In some parts of south Florida .......if you catch a tarpon and let it pull you.............you may very well be getting hauled around by a hammerhead that a lot bigger than your kayak ! BET !
Woah, this is amazing. We have a similar problem here in South Africa, sharks are thankful to the fisherman for bringing them lunch and will sit under kayaks and boats and wait! Great video, as always. Sending positive vibes your way and thank you for the awesome videos.
please don't have bad matches on your kayak, get some water proof matches. if it gets really windy and rainy so you can't return to shore, you're gonna want to have some matches that will still work.
All that action near the bridge; the hooked fish diving to the sea floor, the tarpon breaching to spit out the hook, the splashing on the surface, you rang the dinner-bell for larger predators. As the kayak drifted under the bridge alcove, I was clenching my teeth. The only ingredient missing was a bucket of chum. It felt like the equivalent of the young woman taking a twilight shower at Crystal Lake. Great video!
Amazing fishing! Sometimes it's like that, the conditions are right, you've found the fish, they're feeding aggressively and you catch again and again. That tarpon was huge and so was that shark. I wouldn't hang around there in a kayak after that encounter, if you got into trouble for some unexpected reason it probably wouldn't take long before becoming fish food.
that shark was pretty scary.. could have easily tipped the yak.. dang!! scared the heck out of me.. I'd have left the place then n there... oh and by the way, youtube should make a super duper 'like' symbol as well. cause this video was definitely insane..
Haha yeah I’ve watched the incident probably 20 times by now and it makes me feel like I’m back there on the water again and my adrenaline shy rockets 😆. Glad you enjoyed though!
I’m sure someone else has already said it, the Jaws scene. I think we’ll need a bigger boat !! Fantastic, that first Tarpon, when it launched in to the air… huge sheath of silver… amazing… Keep them coming….😲🤭🍻
MATCHES PRO TIP: You don’t need to strike the entire length of the strip to light a match. In fact, you can use as little as the size of the match head. That way, you can save the strip and light more matches. Happy striking! 🔥
Awesome video, tight lines my friend. I fished the long key bridge yesterday and there were so many tarpon and bull sharks. We caught mutton snappers, no keepers though.
HOLLY s@#$ !! That was freaking awesome !! I'm so hook on your videos. I fish out of the same kayak. I'm trying your swim baits this year for pa bass fishing. Didn't make it to the Jersey shore this . Maybe this fall. God bless, stay safe in that kayak. 👊
Rich... What a fantastic video. You really knocked yourself out. The lead up, the death preview, the overheads, the awesome action at the old bridge... just fantastic. Terrific video adventure. Thanks for all the work to put that video together. Lots of work and pre-planning. I like how you set up a quick fish-fry stop-over, half-in and half-out of the water. Haha. Nothing fancy, right? Very much appreciate all your work here at the consumer end. I'll be following you on a regular basis. Be well.
So Just a quick story. This clip was how i discovered Rich. It was on the Radio up here in Mpls, mn on 93x about the shark almost flipping the kayak. They talked about how insane you were to keep fishing. I found the clip on UA-cam here and been watching ever since! Rich was making international news.
Awesome video Rich. One of the best fishing videos I’ve seen on UA-cam. You’ve done an awesome job incorporating the drone. Sick shots. Then the FISHING! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Gonna binge on a bunch more now. Keep up the great work!
I've got some film of my son catching a beautiful Jack that probably twice the size of what you had here. Took probably 1.5 - 2 hours to get him to the kayak. As he was reaching down to pull it out, it dove straight down and took another 20 minutes to get him back to the side. We found out why he dove... as my son pulled him out of the water, a 6.5ish foot bull surfaced and bit the Jack in half. If it wasn't caught on film, nobody would have ever believed it. It sure changed his tune at wanting to catch a shark on the kayak. haha BTW, love your kayak setup. I'm a minimalist as well and take only what I need. Never understood why kayak fishermen felt the need to take everything including the kitchen sink.
Well, that my friend was the best shot I have seen in a long time. That tarpon cleared the water, and you caught the whole thing on video. Wow, that was truly beautiful. Keep fishing.
I loved the Albright knot for years. Until... I learned the FG knot. Now I definitely prefer the FG. Especially for extra long leaders for fishing from rocks and jetties.
Fished there many times in 9ft inflatable. Lots of big wakes from getting towed by tarpon and sharks. Rumor about BIG MOE hammerhead hanging out on the old bridge. "Bow to the king" when they jump to stop them flipping the hook
I stumbled onto your channel earlier this week. Great content. This episode was insane. I'm sure someone has already answered this, but based on the nose, tail, dorsal fin and the fact that you're fishing a bridge in the keys for Tarpon, I'm fairly certain it was a Bull Shark.
One of the most enjoyable, entertaining, and informative videos I've ever seen on YT. I'm not even that much into fishing. I found your cooking at the end just as entertaining as the rest of the video. I really think you may have stumbled upon a formula. If you put a little more emphasis on the cooking part, I think your hit count will explode. If you create a series of showing fishing/preparing/cooking then it will be internet gold.

@@monkilla165 mako or less likely a blacktip
Definitely a hammerhead. Playback at .25 speed.
"Got him out.....OH MY GOD!!!.....we're gonna have to break that off." 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Absolutely!
Glad I’m watching this sitting on the toilet! I jumped as if I was there! Crazy!
Lmfao 🤣 yah got me.
This 5 days series is great! The Keys are like a wonderland for fishing. I was just there on vacation and saw several sharks. You never know what you're going to see down there.
That’s what I like to call a “CODE BROWN” because it’s time to change your shorts!!
Haha 😆 you got me laughing. I had to check.
Lol
🤣😂😂💀🤣😂🤣
@@FishAholicTV nobody would have said anything if you shat your pants there... i almost thought it was going to tip over....
For the match, if you reverse the paper and hold the match, it will give more resistance and the match should lit up easier
If that shark ate you your last meal would have been power bars. You really would have wished that breakfast place would have open.
My gosh my heart was pounding rich!
Haha tell me about it. It gets me every time still.
This series is amazing! Glad you are OK. I almost had a heart attack watching this one.
New challenge: hook on a tarpon, let it pull you, then throw out a jerkbait and troll while the tarpon pulls you.
That would be legendary
Bro imagine a big cuda or mackerel on the other rod I’d drop weight lifting for that type of action
Imagine if he catches a fish that way.
That would be crazy tbh.
In some parts of south Florida .......if you catch a tarpon and let it pull you.............you may very well be getting hauled around by a hammerhead that a lot bigger than your kayak ! BET !
Oh man I couldn’t watch - I knew it was coming but didn’t know when. Amazing fishing man. I would have brown shorts for sure
Woah, this is amazing. We have a similar problem here in South Africa, sharks are thankful to the fisherman for bringing them lunch and will sit under kayaks and boats and wait! Great video, as always. Sending positive vibes your way and thank you for the awesome videos.
You crushed em. That close call with the bull definitely kicked it up a notch
please don't have bad matches on your kayak, get some water proof matches. if it gets really windy and rainy so you can't return to shore, you're gonna want to have some matches that will still work.
Out of curiosity why would you need matches on a kayak
All that action near the bridge; the hooked fish diving to the sea floor, the tarpon breaching to spit out the hook, the splashing on the surface, you rang the dinner-bell for larger predators. As the kayak drifted under the bridge alcove, I was clenching my teeth. The only ingredient missing was a bucket of chum.
It felt like the equivalent of the young woman taking a twilight shower at Crystal Lake.
Great video!
That right there would've been the end of my kayaking forever!
woooow... it was very surprising when the shark went up, the spot was very beautiful and there were also many kinds of fish, good job brother 👍👍
Sharks in the water. Kayak goes into the water, you go into the kayak....
Farewell to thee, my fair Spanish maiden....
Brilliant!
Gotta love Quint!
looks like I'm your 200K subscriber. Congrats
Amazing fishing! Sometimes it's like that, the conditions are right, you've found the fish, they're feeding aggressively and you catch again and again. That tarpon was huge and so was that shark. I wouldn't hang around there in a kayak after that encounter, if you got into trouble for some unexpected reason it probably wouldn't take long before becoming fish food.
your right
Dood this content is superb. Love the fish grill and simple nature of it all.
that shark was pretty scary.. could have easily tipped the yak.. dang!! scared the heck out of me..
Fantastic, that first Tarpon, when it launched in to the air… huge sheath of silver… amazing…
Keep them coming….😲🤭🍻
Damn I would shit myself too LOL
As they said in Jaws I think we need a bigger boat !
The Old Bridge always has a surprise believe me for years the best spot.
MATCHES PRO TIP: You don’t need to strike the entire length of the strip to light a match. In fact, you can use as little as the size of the match head. That way, you can save the strip and light more matches. Happy striking! 🔥
I have a fishing kayak up north fresh waters and I love it
Thank god you ended fine, what an adventure
Yep I would need a fresh pair of shorts after that one
Awesome video, tight lines my friend. I fished the long key bridge yesterday and there were so many tarpon and bull sharks. We caught mutton snappers, no keepers though.
Bruhhhhh I don’t know how you didn’t drop that rod😂, that was awesome to catch on camera tho
Total boss mode
Dude tbh the sun was in my eyes pretty bad and I didn’t even really know what happened fully until I rewatched the video on the GoPro.
Be well.
The perfect fishing video doesn’t exi- 😳
I got so in to the tarpon bite I forgot the shark encounter was coming - awesome footage.
Living the life kid, always drempt of doing a kayaking vacation to the keys!
Frank Decaprio, go do it, never too late! Go get that dream!
That was a heart pounder- holy crap! Great video
Damn I need a day like this 🙏🔥
I've got some film of my son catching a beautiful Jack that probably twice the size of what you had here.
Anyone who is willing to go in those waters with a self powered boat that small deserves a thumbs up. That looked like a Bull shark to me
Haha thanks Joe! Yeah I think your right. Those Bulls are crazy fish.
Well, that my friend was the best shot I have seen in a long time. That tarpon cleared the water, and you caught the whole thing on video. Wow, that was truly beautiful. Keep fishing.
There isn't enough money in the world to get me to swim that channel at night. Or in broad daylight for that matter
Haha definitely
Right! 😂
I'd do it for a million. The chances of a shark attack are very slim. Playing the percentages for a million bucks.
Wow! Glad you're safe! That was crazy. Poor grouper though...he was hiding out safely until the tugging pried him out into harms way.
LOVE THE FISHING
I'm guessing the 105 thumbs down are from those that swam across the channel?
They’re all from bull sharks
I can't believe people posted thumbs down! This was spectacular!!! Well done---GREAT!
11:27 😲
nope not watching that again.
not all heroes waer capes! cheers
I loved the Albright knot for years. Until... I learned the FG knot. Now I definitely prefer the FG. Especially for extra long leaders for fishing from rocks and jetties.
This shark was not targeting you, I don't think there was any threat to you at all.
I’m so glad to see that your ok, this happened to me a couple years back when I was kayaking in the same area
Totally clutch video Rich! The shark encounter was sick! I'm becoming a big fan of your high quality productions. You fish hard bro!!!
