John Lucas and Gil are so spot on here. Their experience is what basketball feels like in China.
I'm 3rd/4th gen. chinese-american and grew up in a basketball family. Summertime was hot ass gyms, basketball clinics, summer league, and blacktop basketball. He Got Game and Through the Fire was everything. If that was your childhood and teenage years, and you know that culture - let me tell you. I went to China to study abroad in Shanghai a few years ago. Basketball is so pure there.
The weather, the court on every block, people hoopin when they get off work. It's all love and respect there. The game is so pure.

When we had Lucas back in 2009-2011, we made it to the semi-finals. This year, we also made it to the semis, but we lost that fighting spirit from Lucas and Coach Bob Donewald. We also didn't really have a "spiritual captain" like Liu Wei (刘炜). I understand that Lucas is coaching the Lakers now, but the Shanghai Sharks needs him a lot.

  • @slowmoxiong

I am from Shanghai. I can attest to the truth of what they say. John was really good when he played for Shanghai. The network also made a documentary about the Shanghai team that season. Best season since Yao left. My good friend and Gilbert played on the Shanghai team. He said he was the most down-to-earth and humble player he had ever seen. But he likes to play too much. He would have his schoolbag filled with $100 worth of cash before a basketball game. Go straight to the club after the game. He went to the mall to buy his own games and was always patient with any fan, willing to take pictures, willing to talk. It's not like Carmelo Anthony wearing sunglasses and ignoring anyone. Arenas is a rare star who is particularly popular. It's a shame he got injured otherwise we would have liked him to play a few more seasons.
