      It's important that we see history from the Russian perspective and that includes the language. I don't have a problem with English subtitles. Dubbing in English looses a lot of the atmosphere and a lot of the narrative does not translate so well.

      There, at the beginning of the cutscene, there is the name of "Фондкино" - a corrupt government organization, the film is practically sponsored by the Russian mafia.

    As a proud and Patriotic American, I have to say - Alexei Leonov was an excellent and courageous Aviator & Space traveler, like many other Russians in his field.
    According many of our American Astronauts that met Alexei and other Russian Cosmonauts in the 70's....they were a Great bunch of Men and connected with each other easily. They were ALL Excellent Pilots that had a passion for flying and challenging adventures.
    I salute and respect ALL the Aviators and Space travelers from the 1950's - today, from both countries, that have risked & lost their lives in the advancement of Aviation & Spaceflight !

      Same here. Sound quality (very poor) aside, the dialogue in the clip is very badly written, as if by a 10 year old. Foreign language overdubs frequently (and ruinously) change the actual script dialogue in order to match as best as possible the characters' mouth movements; I wonder if that's the case with _The Spacewalker._ Perhaps the producers couldn't raise enough money for a high quality _re-write_ for overdub. Whatever. It's always better to watch films in the original language and just follow the subtitles... for me, anyway.

    Russia has been producing some very good movies lately. Both in the story telling and the quality of the production from the sets, costumes and props. Movies like "Kalashnikov" & "T-34" are examples of recent Russian movies that are worth watching. The Russian CGI industry have also made leaps and bounce on the quality of their CGI. The CGI in this movie is fantastic. Brilliantly realistic. It's first rate. It puts some of the recent Hollywood movies to shame.

    General: "Don't sacrifice your engine, you'll need it!"
    Also General: "Sacrifice your entire aircraft instead!"
    Edit: I just wanna point out that some of arguments in the comment section don't make any sense. First off, the ejection seat doesn't need an electric source to work. It is also supposed to be the last thing you resort to when it comes to an emergency. He could've easily performed a deadstick landing (as he did). Furthermore, the ejection seat doesn't have specific requirements when it comes to low altitude and low speed ejection. Therefore if anything were to happen, he could've (in a normal scenario) ejected.

Sheer courage, grit and determination - along with a healthy dose of crazy luck - helped deal with events that go far beyond what you would think the "usual" risks of space flight entail, but they completed the mission. The movie actually came out in Russia in 2017. Great space exploration movie, in tone it's quite similar to "Apollo 13" in how a mission can jump from success to complete disaster and back to success. Solid special effects, the majority of the movie is Leonov's spacewalk and the following search & rescue after their Vostok (or was it Soyuz?) capsule lands in Siberia. Lacks the heavy propaganda angle that the contemporary "Saluyt-7" has.
    I strongly recommend to watch it with in the original Russian audio, if nothing else, for authenticity's sake.
    Definitely among the best space exploration movies I've seen.

    Am I misunderstanding or does nothing here make sense? The officer on the ground tells him to not extinguish the fire, because it will shut down the engine - presumably because the plane would be lost. But an engine fire would probably destroy the plane anyway. Then, he tells the pilot to eject - which would destroy the plane anyway.
    Then, the pilot kills the engine, but risks everything to dive down and restart it. The engine restarts only a few seconds from landing on the runway. If he could do that, he could easily have just come in for an unpowered landing. What?

But the technician forgot to remove the safety pin from the catapult. The catapult didn't work. The pilot had no other choice. It is fast action; but he tries to eject but the safety pin has been left in. He then kills the engine to deal with fire. Restarts to control landing and just makes it. He then removes the pin on landing so the crew chief and his friend won’t get in trouble. He take blame for foolhardy stunt asserting he wanted to save aircraft. The General observes that such a fool hardy pilot may be what they need.
      In the film the scientists and engineers are shown to be pressed by politicians to get rocket in orbit to beat the Americans. The space craft is not properly tested - why they need a cool but fool hardy pilot to take command.
      In the end a Ham radio operator saves the day but is told to be quiet the capsule landed way off course.
      It is a great tale and apparently true.

    • @sprintrider100
      @sprintrider100 3 роки тому +2

      Not true - the engine is necessary for two reasons: you can't glide in a jet fighter dead-stick as they fly like a breeze-block without thrust (that's why Leonov went into such a steep dive to keep airspeed and avoid stalling); you need the engine on to provide the hydraulic pressure for the flight control asist and to lower the gear. Remember, this is a first-generation jet and system backups were few. This sequence is very realistic!

    • @AllThingsCubey
      @AllThingsCubey 3 роки тому

      @@sprintrider100 You... can glide in a MiG 15. You just have to be going fast enough. Stall speed is 150mph, which is high, but achievable with the altitude he had. Considering he lands almost immediately after pulling out of a high speed dive, he's going way faster than he needs to be, and clearly doesn't need the engine at all for speed. His altitude was already enough for a good approach engine free.
      Secondly, MiG 15 is small and light enough that lack of power for the control surfaces isn't going to make it unflyable. He would have had a much less dangerous landing just by doing a spiral descent, leveling out and flaring along the runway, engine free.
      From what this scene shows, all the engine re-light in the dive achieved was causing him to come in way too fast and nearly fail to recover the dive at all. Just done for dramatic effect I'd bet.

      @@AnyoneCanSee i am aviation engineer, thats why i say its rubish and have nothing to do with reality except FE killing engine and pilot being good person and "protecting" technician from punishment for not doing his work properly (ejection seat safety pin)
      So thank you for you pathetic comment.

      @@Tamburahk that is the story line; he can’t eject so they have be reckless. It is movie so I am sure you are correct about the engineering. The story is apparently based on the cosmonaughts biography but I am sure the dramatised the details. It is cinema after all.

      @@russellmiles2861 i dont mind dramatization, but in this scene there was almost everything wrong, it could be same entertainment and still realistic...........

      In real live this really did happen, with one difference: troubles was not with engine, but with landing gears. Rest the same. Malfunction of engine just allowed to add speed in movie scene (as said Leonov, unrealistic speed).
      Scene about “saved technician” actually not about character. It is interesting point of view and how you perceived it. Example of different culture. You know, in USA if someone in school cheat, it is common for rest kids to say about that to teacher. As I heard, it is perceived as something good, “to protect your friend from cheat”. In Russia it will be perceived as total fail, you will be declared as betrayer and you literally have no future in that class. So, actually this scene just about stupid technician, not about Leonov as “big character who saved him”, any other would do the same (technicians often were friends, you just can’t betray own friend).

    This is similar to a book by Jed Mercurio called 'Ascent'. It's a brilliant read.

    As movies with no happy ends seem to get more popular now, Soviet era air and space history would be a treasure trove for good pictures ...then the brave Heros involved would get the recognition they deserve like Vladimir Komarov, Vladimir Bondarenko and Sergei Korolev. There are a lot of rich oligarchs who could redeem themselves a bit and finance these so the world could see.
