  • Japanese maples and dwarf conifers in Spring 2020.
Japanese Princess, Usugumo, Ukigumo, Monumentale and Geisha Gone Wild are always the last to push out their leaves.

What month was this filmed please? Also, it’s amazing your Japanese Princess is so colorful and your Ukigumo so white with so little sun. I’ve heard they typically “green out”, producing more chlorophyll. If this is spring, I’ve never seen an Usugumo anything but green. What part of country you in? Looks like Pacific Northwest. If so, your soil is probably on the acidic side which may be making a huge difference. My crappy soil here in Dallas is alkaline heavy clay. Sorry for so many questions. Just amazing, congrats on your garden. I can totally appreciate what you have there.

Well maintained garden. Appears like myself that eventually spacing is going to catch up with you.
Keep an eye on geisha gone wild. Here in the East it never grew well for me and always died out at about the size you show. Should yours do so check out the ghost series developed by Talon Buccholz
Do you need to irrigate in the PNW?
Finally you have an amazing source out your way as well. Stanley & Sons nursery In Oregon

How long (time period) do you run your soaker hoses for your in ground shrubs?

It really depends on our seasonal rains but 30-45 minutes, when needed. This is in the PNW during the summer.

Beautiful video! Usigumo, Ukigumo, Butterfly.. Other than Usigumo having larger leaves, I can't tell much difference in them. Could someone please explain? Are they all equally shade tolerant?

Usugumo is a Pictum and Ukigumo is Palmatum. Usugumo’s leaf shape is like a batwing. Pretty neat. They are both spring color trees. Not much fall color. They both require dappled sunlight or they’ll burn. I haven’t owned a butterfly so I can’t comment on that cultivar. Usugumo has a very nice spring transition. Like uncurling hands from peach to white and green. These behaviors are for trees planted in the PNW.

How much sun exposure does your Japanese Princess get? It’s gorgeous!

The in-ground tree is behind a large atlas cedar and some mountain hemlocks so only a couple hours of direct sun. The container planted tree gets about 3 hours. That’s mid summer. I’m moving the container tree this year to try and increase colors.

does the Ukigumo get any direct sun light?

No direct sunlight. Only mottled. It’s under a big fir and some hemlocks.

It took me 3 years of looking locally. You could ask Mr. Maple about their waiting list.
