Gabriel should have unloaded the ball instead of taking about 6 of the sacks OR used his legs more to run up field. He allowed a QB spy to run right at him and nail him. Not all his fault, of course. The line were tackling dummies all game. Congrats Buckeyes. You came to the party and created garbage time before the first half ended.

I'm nowhere near 80 but I heard a lot of Armed Forces radio growing up as a military brat and they played a lot of old radio shows including Jack Benny, and it was pretty clear that during the 40s and 50s the Rose Bowl was already the "super bowl" of college football, as it was a common theme in those old shows to try and get to the game.

I think Texas’s struggles all came down to lack of offensive production. Defense played phenomenal for 3 quarters, but had played on the field for too much of the game going into the final quarter and was tired. Texas could not get a long drive going to get their defense rest, and that allowed the Sun Devils to come back big in the 4th quarter.
Regarding the targeting call, if they’re gonna call Texas for theirs, then they have to call the interception play on ASU where Bond was smoked while defenseless MID-AIR. That one was more targeting than the Texas call IMO. Also, if players can’t use the crown of their helmet to tackle, then players shouldn’t be able to use the crown to truck defenders when carrying the ball. If we’re trying to discourage dangerous play, then that’s a huge inconsistency.

I have to disagree with your complaints about the seedings. Hindsight is 20/20. After Ohio State lost to Michigan there is no way you can say that Ohio State deserved to be seeded above Penn State (Big10 #2) and Texas (SEC#2)? Why should Ohio State have been seeded ahead of teams that played in conference championship games and lost to the #1 and #2 teams in the country. I don't understand how you can legitimately say its obvious that the Big10 #3 should have been seeded above the Big#2 when Ohio State played themselves OUT of the Conference Championship game. After Ohio State lost to Michigan (which should matter and effect seeding) Texas was going to be slated to play Texas, Penn State, or ND. Its revisionist history to suggest its an easy call to say Ohio State should be seeded above all three of those teams. Oregon got hosed by Ohio State mailing in the Michigan game. Its a fairly easy fix. Campus games for the first two rounds, then take 3 of the New Year's 6 bowls ....say Rose, Sugar and Peach....two of them get the semi and the third gets the national championship. Then the next year it's the Cotton, Fiesta and Orange. Then each set of 3 bowls takes turns hosting semis and national championship in rotation. In the off years, it gives other teams that didn't make the playoff a chance to play in a traditional big bowl game. It's a little odd to see one team get to play in the Rose and Cotton in the same year.
I'd love the Rose to host the national championship every year but I seriously doubt all the other major bowls would agree to that.

As for those saying “ the Michigan loss is confusing “ etc.. you’ve gotta learn a bit more about defense. OSU threw the ball more against Michigan than it did TN. It also threw early, but if you remember, their first drive started deep in their own end and they tried to throw wide to get away from Michigans “strength “ and Howard got picked off. The difference is Michigans D. Their coverage and scheme is what limited OSU. They got to Howard early and often and clearly rattled him. His throws became rushed and inaccurate and eventually led to another pic. His performance made OSU have to try to run the ball to pull our coverage up.. but they couldn’t handle our front 7. It’s really simple. Michigan out played and out coached them. Did the same thing to Bama. Michigan’s D really clicked in the second half of the season. If we had any kind of offense we wouldn’t have lost another game after Oregon. To be honest, the only reason we are talking about Michigan having the best D in the country is BECAUSE of its offense. The oline was hurting, QB situation was very rough and the OC was asleep at the wheel half the time. With a decent offense, Michigan is in the playoffs.

Sorry Joel but have to disagree with the targetting. If Taafe didnt lead with the arms to wrap him up - would have been more of a case imo. Youve also said this too on a previous Texas game. You also should keep in mind the final TD by ASU to tie the game was aided by 4 penalties in final 3 or 4 plays - one giving them a 2nd chance at a 2 pt conversion. Speaking of calls late affecting the game

Haven't finished listening to Joel's explanation for "Rose Bowl as National Championship Game," but I disagree for a few reasons that maybe he refutes later.
    1) Pull weather / field conditions out of the picture. Play it indoors, always.
    2) Rose Bowl would effectively be home field for any California / West Coast teams and literally home field if/when UCLA ever makes it back. Can't systematically set it up that way. The natty stadium location should rotate such that it's just dumb good fortune if it is played at or near one of the team's home fields.
    3) Let other venues / cities share the wealth. Yes, the Rose Bowl is iconic, but there are other cities and stadiums that are deserving as well.

How is the season supposed to end at the Rose Bowl? You want the games on campus, you want to not tax the fans, you want more conference games. I like the bowl games being part of the playoff. It actually helps that it “softens” the ticket market. If fans are trying to go to 3 bowl games they are rich anyways. It’s better for the majority of fans to be able to pick one and have a great time. Also if you make the Rose Bowl the college football Super Bowl, you’ll basically keep average people from ever being able to experience the Rose Bowl because it will make the tickets like $10k a piece.

Aside from game 1, they have to get everyone else “at home” Oregon on the west coast, Texas in Arlington, possibly Georgia in Atlanta. The seeding was ridiculous. I put the issue more on Texas offense. Defense played lights out fueled by offensive players in the first half. But I felt ASU just had ton of time of possession in 1H and 3rd quarter just tipped it over the top. I think it was like 13 mins vs. 2 mins with like less than 7-8 plays by Texas. Offense could not keep it going to give a break to defense. And when they still play lights out in 2H but unfortunately lose out on 2-3 trick plays, it does put the air out of the room. I thought defense did what it was suppose to do. 500 yards is a LOT and 31 pts as well, but if offense can help bring some balance, I think defense would've been okay.

It is interesting to me that so many members of the press seem certain that Taafe (UT) targeted the ASU receiver. I was unclear on the rule so i read the entire rule. And in reading the entire definition of targeting (not just a few bullets from the rule) it is far less clear to me. Do i think the player was defenseless = Yes. Does the fact that the pass was tipped matter = No. But, as an example from the entire targeting rule, “Note 1: “Targeting means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle…”. The best example given in the rule is “Leading with helmet ….to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area”. It is important to note that a face mask is not “a helmet”. We can all form our own opinions, but i think it’s unclear that Taafe was “taking aim with his helmet for the purpose of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle. In my opinion, Taafe was making a normal football move tackle, he didnt lead with his helmet (and certainly not the crown of his helmet), and his face mask and likely some of his helmet contacted the defender simultaneously with the rest of his body, shoulder pads, etc.
