    Would be nice if they redid their horrendous brakes and the problem with the roe lever not clicking back to its ”ski position”. I wonder how many cistomers I have had that has had that problem

    Just take a tecton!! Half the weight, better release, same downhill performance. No one cares about the easy step in while in resort - but you do care about the lack of touring comfort you’ll get with those bindings.
    Yeah - take a tecton! 😇🙌🏽

    The biggest problem with Shifts is the brakes dont deploy at enough of an angle and runaway skis are a big problem, so much so that I can't trust mine in the back country anymore. Its doesnt appear that has been addressed which is disappointing.

      Seen it happen, luckily in spring snow but the owner did not seem that happy

      I have the same problem even on my second set of Shifts with a better fitting brake width. My last ones ran about 300m down a moderately sloping bit of side piste after a low speed pre-release.

    To me the biggest issue was the brakes not folding in. I had quite a few scary moments accidentally going into “monoski” mode because the brakes tangled themself up. Other than that it doesn’t seem like they did a lot but make it a bit stronger wich I don’t know rather it was needed. I have never heard of them breaking on anyone. Still tho, the shift is a great binding. I would recommend the binding to anyone searching for a 50/50 touring and resort skiing binding. To me it is the perfect binding for your good old one quiver ski. Tho I would not recommend the binding to anyone who already has a Shift and wants an upgrade. To me there are just not enough changes or improvements to justify the step up in price.

      Just buy atk, the ferrari of bindings, or if you charge like a mofo (you need to be in like 99,995%) buy cast

      “The problem some had after using it a number of seasons”… I would say the problem that were extremely obvious after five minutes on the first use rather. Unbelievable that this simple fixes were not made before production already in the first edition. But still, good that they are finally here.

    Is there any update to the forward pressure spring or mechanism? Besides the brakes falling off and afd wandering the heel seemed to have just about daily issues with retention.

    • @powder7skis
      @powder7skis  8 місяців тому +1

      No change to that mechanism. There is going to be a 60mm heel rail option for the Shift 10, but the fwd pressure adjustment is still the same. I think the idea is the new AFD should solve some of those prerelease problems, but I haven't gotten to ride the new version yet. - Alex

    Cool bit of engineering...but given that the market for traditional touring bindings has evolved since when these were first in development, I do not see the point in these anymore. You can now buy touring bindings that do not suffer from prerelease and release more predictably in the event of a crash for about the same price but at a fraction of the weight, which makes touring much more enjoyable. If pin bindings are good enough for Nikolai Schirmer - backflipping off a spine over 50 degree terrain in the back country (and then falling because he is a goofball) - I think it is good enough for me earning a few turns on low angle terrain with some friends before gassing out after thousand feet.

    • @powder7skis
      @powder7skis  7 місяців тому

      Yeah, I totally hear you on the increased reliability of tech bindings. I think one big difference the Shift (and Duke/Cast) offers is the elastic travel of a downhill binding. That gives you suspension and dampness through the binding when dealing with challenging conditions. I love my ATK bindings (and ski them happily inbounds after an uphill lap or recently when we bailed on touring one day and went to the resort instead), but they definitely feel more static and less responsive than a downhill binding. Yeah I'll take them off jumps and hits, but they're not my favorite thing to ski in hard bumps. It's subtle, but they just feel less responsive and a bit more harsh in that kind of terrain.
      I don't think the Shift is for the 100% tourer, it's for the person who wants that dedicated one-ski quiver (or is maybe putting this on their wider, softer snow oriented pair) and is inbounds 60-90% of the time on that set. I wouldn't point someone in this direction who was going with a strictly alpine touring set up. Salomon has another great binding for that, their MTN bindings. -Alex

    did they change the ramp angle?
    The toes are SO low.

    • @powder7skis
      @powder7skis  8 місяців тому +2

      Good eye!! We didn't hear about this originally, but now that I'm diving into the catalog it looks like the new "height" (which I'm assuming is toe height) is listed at 24.2 mm compared to the old height of 37mm. That would be pretty wild to drop that much. I'm just seeing one "height" listed, so I'm not sure what the new ramp angle is. My assumption would be pretty similar to the old Shift (9mm delta between toe and heel), and they likely dropped that heel, too. My understanding is the elastic travel ranges haven't changed. I'll update here once we get more info! -Alex

      I meant even the current shifts are so low. It way easier to ski powder with your ramp angle flatter. @@powder7skis

    • @powder7skis

      Drill pattern is exactly the same! So you still have that interesting "front" screw the toe piece attaches to. If you have the old one and want the new one, you just use the exact same holes. -Alex

    • @powder7skis
      @powder7skis  8 місяців тому +2

      The new binding is heavier: 1840 grams for the pair, vs 1780 in the current pair. So, just about 60 grams or 30 grams on each foot. Pretty negliable, but extra heft for sure! -Alex

      @powder7skis  8 місяців тому

      The new binding is heavier: 1840 grams for the pair, vs 1780 in the current pair. None of the materials have really changed, my understanding is most of the weight comes down to the new toe wings that are a little beefier for extra power transfer and shock absorbtion. -Alex
