Diagnosed in college. I was told it would be a miracle if I graduated. I did it in 4.5yrs. -TIS A MIRACLE!- Years later, after earning two Master’s degrees, I heard from a doctor that it was impossible for me to have ADHD because I hold degrees. I never saw that doctor again.

Discovered I have ADHD 2 years ago, aged 51, halfway through my distance learning degree course. In June I got a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Criminology!! I deserved a 1st, but the writing skills was SO hard and so was the reading & trying to decipher written feedback from the tutors. I knew tonnes more than my peers, but to they were better at the academic side. Assessment needs to change to accommodate us and reflect our true knowledge of the subject. My Dad, if he were alive would definitely have 'poo-pooed' the diagnosis 😂😂

As someone who suffers with extreme severe anxiety I can totally relate to her. I would stop eating for days at a time as a punishment. I worry a lot about my life, everyone around me and pleasing everyone. It's absolutely crippling, so glad she got the help she needed, lovely young lady it's so sad that society has 1 in 3 people suffering mental health issues. I hope everyone seeks help

When I was diagnosed in my 60s (you can guess - in the wake of diagnoses for adult children), my husband agreed that it made sense of almost everything, but at some point asked how on earth I managed to get nearly all As in my undergrad studies, a Master’s with first class honours, and a PhD. I had to think about that. My answer - because I never attempted anything in my tertiary studies that I couldn’t do standing on my head. My discipline, subjects, courses, topics and options were chosen for love, and required me to do nothing that I couldn’t do very willingly and without real difficulty (which is not the same as without effort, mind.) I doubt current education systems would be so ready to countenance and reward hyperfocus!

I had a doctor who is supposedly a specialist in ADD/ADHD tell me that I did too well in university so couldn't have ADD. Walked out of his office. He wrote a review and sent it to my doctor that bashed me to cover his butt. Later I met a lady who told me that she had also made the mistake of going to this same doctor too. She also recognized that he had preconceived notions of how well we could adapt. Unfortunately, there is some bad doctors out there.

I have a masters. I loved working on my bachelors. School offered just enough structure for me to lean into but not so much as to be oppressive. I was-- for the most part-- taking classes in subjects that interested me and I didn't have all of the additional life stressors that adults do, like taking care of a home or family or having a complicated job. College was a breeze. It wasn't until I bought a house and had to really figure out the adulting thing that the cracks really began to appear.
P.S. Tenille's Captain totally had Asperger's. Don't know if he was ever diagnosed, but when you watch him in interviews back in the day, it is so clear.

Diagnosed at 50 right before the start of the pandemic they eventually discovered my recurring mental health issues and eventually a burnout had a better fitting explanation.
Having a university degree, especially the kind of degree and training I had - turned out to have been the biggest blind spot. But a curious psychologist asked the right questions and we did the proper diagnostic steps and then it was staring me in the face. Accepting the diagnosis, coming to terms with something that has had such a profound impact on my life - with the stories from other people with this diagnosis having so much similarities that I needed time to find myself again - and see it for what it is. As a tall 1.97m person a lot of my experiences going through life will be similar to other tall people - but I am not “just a tall person” it doesn’t completely define me. Yet for a while the ADHD diagnosis sort of felt that way - especially when getting therapy for it. Oh and trauma (which can be far broader than life threatening experiences leading to PTSD) turned out also to be a part of the issues in my case. Also not incoming for others getting their diagnosis later in life.
And about 4 years later it has turned out to be the best thing that has happened to me as it changed me personally, professionally and allows me to be a better mental health advocate, even among my co-workers.
There’s a whole cluster of adults where the pandemic coincided or was somehow the accelerator for their diagnosis.
Your videos and books were advised by my young psychologist and were a great help in coming to terms and understanding it better from a personal perspective. Thanks for that.

Do it! School was such a discouraging environment for me. My ADHD is the inattentive type and I felt sensory overload and anxiety in classes. I saw a video on ADHD which said that we are about 10 years behind our peers, meaning our brains don’t fully develop until later so we really are disadvantaged at school. That might mean that you cope better now with studying than you did as a younger person. I got an online Open University degree in Natural Sciences (with the main focus on biology) at age 54. Online studying suited me better than sitting in a classroom with other people. However, it took me 9 years working full time! I got a 2:1, which I am happy with but I think that if my memory worked better I could have got a first. I always found exams and retaining information difficult and apparently that’s another ADHD trait. Anyway, the point is that sometimes we limit ourselves and worst, listen to other people tell us we can’t do things. Don’t wait until you are older. Go do your degree asap and I will be here cheering you on!

It's amazing how good it is to know that one has ADHD, or at least good reason to believe so. Go about doing things differently, knowing you are a "buccaneer", skip the organizing techniques and lifestyles of regular folk, the "farmers", booby-trap yourself to not forget things, and life can be good.

I've been seeing a psychiatrist who mostly works with children (I think). He agrees that I have a lot of ADHD symptoms and difficulties as an adult. However, he won't diagnose me with it as he feels it has to have been picked up in childhood. The fact that I was a distracted child, but ok at school until university isn't enough. It's a bit frustrating. However, he did agree to gave me trial ADHD meds and I find that they're helping a bit. Still, I don't much like the idea of not having a diagnosis.

I am the poster child for inattentive ADHD... And I have a college degree. I graduated summa cum laude, perfect 4.0 GPA. However, it took me twelve years and my list of attempted credits (classes I withdrew from) were nearly twice as long as my completed credits. I would get so overwhelmed with boredom in classes I wasn't interested in or didn't get to choose myself. If I was struggling to grasp a concept, I would just drop the class. I had to attempt College Algebra seven times before I was finally able to tough it out to completion. In the 3 years since then, I've attempted seven different masters degrees, one of which I got halfway through (with top marks) before quitting. The struggle of college for me has consistently been an inability to focus, to sit still and just push through subjects that I find boring or pointless, and even to stick to a major academic field because my interests ping all around the map and are constantly changing both in subject and intensity.
