      It's so people don't just buy AMG crate engines and put it in something they don't want it to be in. Realistically the engine probably costs at most 20k to make.

      Ship a rare engine from germany and find a guy who can change it out and keep the warranty valid, and tax -international tax on a rare engine. --- costs more than the car new--- yes sounds right to me.

    Hey man, I'm a Bimmer guy but happened to come across your last video where you explained what happened and first found out you hydro locked. While I'm not a Benz fan at all, I still feel for you. It sucks that you worked so hard for it and this happened. I understand the love you have for your car and I respect that a lot. One thing I've learned in life that I wish for you. Sometimes God takes away things from us only to give us something better. Whatever happens, there's a reason. You might not see it now but sometime either in the near or far future it'll all make sense. Good luck and I wish the best for you.

    I wish you good luck and all the best with the upcoming and your new car in the future.

    So if the engine is 71k and the total cost was 88k,,,, you're saying the vehicle without a motor is only worth 17k? Sound to me like a stealership ripping off an insurance company on the engine quote. Hoping the insurance company would bite and they could make a ton of $$$ Off the insurance company.

      I think there is a translation problem because the motor isn't 71k, my buddy work at a Mercedes dealer ship and he accessed the parts list and a new motor (short block) is $12,500 and a complete turn key motor is $23,700

    • @masongarcia8203
      @masongarcia8203 7 років тому +43

      no this price is indeed correct, I am a mercedes technician and have seen several amg engine quotes go through. recently we quoted a new cls 63 engine the 5.5l bitrbo engine, complete assembly from germany guess how much it cost to buy? 127k. everytime mercedes sells and amg product they loose money, the motors are handcrafted, built by one person and one person alone, then on top of that they have to be transported over to the dealer ship from germany and then put in by a technician, on a job like that we can easily charge 20-30 hours due to all the adaptations and software we have to update along with the break in we do. so yes a regular say e350 engine might be 23k an amg is not.

    • @masongarcia8203
      @masongarcia8203 7 років тому +31

      @alexander i can assure you that is the case. these engines are not produced by a machine, they pay a man salary to build these and go over a detailed inspection of the engine before it is deliver and installed in a car. each engine has the persons name that built it on the engine. they put it there by hand. the head bolts are tighted by hand, the wire harness is installed by hand, the pistons each individually inspected and lubricated are installed by hand. you do not have to belive me if you do not want to, but i have no reason to lie to you and gain nothing by sharing this information. I simply want to stop the accusations that these engines are cheap or the dealership is trying to rip somebody off. i have put together a quote on a crashed e 63 entire front end rebuild, it came out to be 32k just for the suspension, this did not include the body work.

    71,000 Dollars WOW!!!!!! Merc better cut the check for this one. The car is under warranty and you drove the car in normal conditions. Like wtf seriously, A little bit of heavy rain should not fuck up a car like that. Get on the phone with Mercedes Benz USA and tell them to take that car BACK.

      Warranty cannot be applied to this case, because it wasn,t a factory defect. About the price of the engine, it might be hand build but 71 grand for a new engine... AMG are nuts

      Have never seen this on a vehicle of this caliber. I drove my stock ass jeep patriot through a HUGE 4 foot deep water puddle and wound up with an engine with 3 bent rods And I'm talking water over the headlights deep & the damn thing still got me home. He didn't drive it in "normal" conditions, I'm guessing there's a piece of the story still somewhat missing. I'm assuming a very large amount of water came up while he also happened to hit water and he sucked some in. Hell he had a small amount of water in the intake a day later, clearly, he sucked in a good chunk of water.

    • @hasanal-habbobi4018
      @hasanal-habbobi4018 7 років тому +49

      Shawn Reding
      It wasn't the rain that got him, it was the fact that a car hit a deep puddle infront of him which caused a giant wave of water to hit the front of the car, so its almost like a flood......and it comes down mostly to bad luck. Almost any car would also be effected if the same thing happened to it. So no it didn't just hydro lock because of rain... You can even watch his vlogs where he drives he Merc in the rain countless times with no issues.... Rather its because he got hit with a tsunami of a wave at the worst possible time
      This is why this isn't a warranty issue.... nothing broke because of an mechanical issue..... it was due to weather. Mercedes would honor it if it was just that but anything else falls under insurance. That's like saying a Ferrari should be better engineered so it won't have hail damage, and if it gets caught in a hail storm...and is damaged, FERRARI should warranty it. the car's systems can only handle so much of an influx of water at once. It can filter some out and cope with it, burn it off, etc. But he got bombarded with a large wave of water that's harder for a car, any car, to cope with. That's why you avoid driving through high water or when there's a chance to get a large level of water in the car. That's one of the things I learned when driving you AVOID large puddles because there's always that chance enough water can get into the intake and hydrolock the engine. Regardless, it's not a warranty thing, the car didn't fail because of any mechanical or design flaw it failed because of operator error/"an act of God." Merc designed and built the car, but they're not the ones who allow large sums of water to get thrown in the intake. I mean the car has to have an intake and anywhere it is it risks sucking in water. Avoid puddles. If you driving on the road and you see cars in the oncoming lane splashing up large amounts of water from puddles either movie over to another lane, get off that street, or pull over and wait for the rain to die down. Cars run on fuel and air, they can't run at all on water.
      I think its a little suspicious that he "wasn't recording during that time" and probably drove fast through the puddle but he doesn't want to admit it... But this last part is just my conspiracy theory if you will.

    • @wykydytron
      @wykydytron 7 років тому +10

      Hasan Al-habbobi no it wouldn't happen to any other car, even to older mb, intake on that car is in wrong place, seen older generation of that car drive over flooded street to the point that water covered half engine bay and nothing happend to it becouse intake was where it should be, near upper part of engine not under it

    • @Desaroo15
      @Desaroo15 7 років тому +5

      +Shawn Reding why? The position has nothing to do with it. It was just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. If the puddle was smaller everything would have been A-Okay

    Ok......For the people who are ignorant about how insurance works, and based on some of the comments, there are many here. pay attention.
    His car was not 100% paid for and it was financed.
    Since the insurance company has totaled his car out, any and all money will first go to the lien holder of the car and not to Mike himself.
    The insurance company will look at the used market value for his car and if they`re an ethical insurance company, this is the amount that they will pay to the lean holder minus Mikes deductible.
    If the amount they pay to the lien holder is less than what`s still owed on the car, Mike will have to come out of pocket for the difference.
    However, if Mike also has GAP insurance, any money that he`ll have to pay because of the difference between what`s paid to the lien holder from the insurance company and what`s still owed on the car will be covered by the GAP insurance.
    Overall, the best case scenario is that Mike will only be out of pocket for his insurance deductible.

    If you go rewatch the original video, he mentions a car passing him, and in the process that car splashed a HUGE amount of water onto his car and thus into the intake. Though it's pretty rare for this to happen and tough to do (usually), so maybe this was a poor design from Mercedes for this particular car? Hydrolock isn't something you see every day.

    • @snake120696
      @snake120696 7 років тому +3

      It is poor design, but a high performance car like this one is built to allow the maximum air flow into the engine. I guess AMG tested the car in heavy rain conditions, but never expected a huge ass water splash. As a mechanical engineer myself I would say someone in AMG fucked up and didnt do his/her job properly by designing and testing the car in conditions a daily car can face. I know this is a high performance car, but it is a still a car for the everyday use. Not even an F1 car has this kind of problems in wet conditions, and they get splashed with several gallons of water by the car infront during race time.

      That's fairly typical for any new car. Once you buy a car it becomes "used" and immediately loses value even if the condition of the car doesn't change. You could buy a car at the dealership and immediately turn around and try and sell it back to them and the car will be worth less simply because it's previously owned.

      FinestSPEC i agree with your first 3 points but while it does drive well its more of a gt car and not as fun to drive as the amg which is more track oriented. And if you go as far to compare the lc500 then he can opt for the s63 which (as good as the lc500 is) is arguably better than the lc500... So much so that it even competes on rr and Bentley level... Let alone maybach!
      Lexus is more reliable to some extent sure but you are definitely over exaggerating it...every single car is prone to breaking. Especially modern cars with the greater amount of complexities technologies and amount of things controlled by electronics... Don't even pretend like it won't break.... This is way overexaggerating what is already an overused stereotype.

    I think you're better off in the long run even though you may lose a little money and some time with the car. That thing was bad luck from the day you got it. You almost spun out and crashed after the first burnout. Then the spoiler you installed wouldn't stay on. Then the differential went out. Now the motor is hydrolocked. Bad karma/bad luck car. The first new car I ever bought in 2012 was that way! I had been driving for 14 years and I'd never had an accident, never broke down, never curbed a wheel. Nada. The first year of having that car I was in two accidents that were not my fault. Plus I curbed a wheel parallel parking. So I had it replaced ($$$) Then I got cut off a month later and had to go up on the sidewalk to avoid being hit and I blew apart the new wheel and tire I had just replaced. So I replaced it again (3rd fucking wheel I had to replace and 2nd tire) There were 3-4 more close calls over the next 6-8 month so I traded it in and got the same thing except a 2014 and I haven't had an incident since.

      Yep happened to me as well. Was having an epic second year in uni, feeling myself.
      Then snowdrifted and plowed my new Cherokee into a freeway barrier driving back from holidays with the family. My fault. Gotta learn to grow up the hard way right
      Got it repaired, and 1 week later it got stolen from school. "What the hell is going".
      Filed a police report, never found. "Of course its freaking stolen."
      Bought a hoopdie for 1200, which I really did not have, as a student. Took it to a mechanic buddy to inspect it and pre-clear it for me, another 300. "At least I have a car again..."
      2 months later the alternator dies. "Fuck it! Im renting from now on" Now I just car-share from 3 different companies, Car2Go ( GLC, CLK ), Turo ( Teslas, Bentleys, Benz, you name it ), ZipCar ( BMW X1, Mini's etc )
      What did I learn as I grew into a man from all this?
      "What the fucking point of owning something that will sit parked 90% of the time and depreciate 30-50% of its value in its first 3 years when I can just rent the newest and coolest whenever I need to."
      Stuck with me ever since.

      Zipcar is the one i use for the long distance travel. And its price really depends on your need of use. When I was 9-5ing, I was driving the car for 90 mins a day. About 16 bucks a day for a MB. Not too bad.
      Then I just stopped working for others and started making my own money. Dont really need the car more than 3 times a week.
      Definitely not viable if you need it everyday. But it is depreciative debt that eats a good chunk of your worth away.
      If I only had a car for 2 months and lost 70K because of a rainstorm, i would be way less calm about it

    all the experiments you have made to see what happens to cars, and it took some standing water to fuck up your car.

    Mike, i strongly suggest you have the engine rebuilt, go through a shop with good reviews, that way you can avoid the cost of a new engine or a new car

      Roberto Martin Agree just have the motor rebuilt. Work a deal with MB and insurances. Rebuild less than 12K

      Blackerflash warranty is already gone. He can do whatever he wants with the car now but the insurance company won't allow him to keep it if he wants them to declare it totaled.

    I feel for you man. I bought the perfect truck and got rear ended before I could even make my first payment. I made my 1st and 2nd payments while it sat on my driveway waiting for parts (bed floor for 1st year model took weeks to get) and then my body shop of choice to have an opening for me. Oh and 2 years later it was hit again totaling it that time.

    Now you will know how good your car insurance company is. I totaled a 2016 SL550 that I custom ordered from Germany. My insurance company did a very good job. But keep in mind the people who price how much the car is worth is not the insurance company it is a separate identity company. So you must make sure that all options you ordered or on the essay. And do verify that. I only lost $15,000. The car just turned 10,000 miles and it was nine months old. Most options they will give you half since yours is 7 weeks they should give you more than half on your options the ones that are on the car standard and the ones you ordered if you put on a special paint coverage LoJack or anything else make sure all of that is on there including the condition of the paint and the body. It is imperative that they get everything. so I was able to replace it with a custom order new one from 2017 and with a little more options that I got. I would have gotten an AMG but took me 40 years to save up for the SL I don't think I had another 30 years . I have somewhat engineering background and I can let you know that this is an engineering flaw. Sometimes you don't know about them until after they get there. But it is something to keep in mind to mention to the Mercedes-Benz people remember they designed the car and they're responsible for the design. You can also find out how many other cars of your model in the world this has happened to by going through Mercedes of Germany your dealership can help you. This is how recalls are formulated. Good luck and in a few months you feel much better I did

    Bad design. Is the C43 Intake set up the same way? It SHOULD fall on Mercedes or as you say it AMG.
    Some AMG tech is gonna scoop that car up for pennies on the dollar, fix that engine and be rollin real nice for real cheap.

    How extensive was the damage? I wonder why they just wouldn't have just replaced the rotating assembly (the crank, rods and pistons) ? Did the block or heads crack?

    I've seen new and old Toyota and other Japanese cars drive through a foot of water in Louisiana floods without an issue. You're telling me this "#superior " German engineering built 80k$ AMG hydro locked in a few inches of rain water ?

    Is this not insurrance covered? In my country this is seen as storm caused damage, such as hail and covered by a premium insurrance as well (and ofcourse all-risk).
