- It's no secret that the characters of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends were based on real-life vehicles, but did you know how many of them actually survived into the modern day? Time to find out!
I have an earlier video covering a similar topic but it had mistakes, so this video aims to correct them, and also include HiT and CGI characters!
Hopefully this one has no mistakes, lol.
I’d like to make a case for Edward.
True, Awdry describes Edward as a Furness K2, but in the stories Edward undergoes several overhauls that ultimately end up with him barely resembling what he looked like to begin with.
A closer match to the real Edward isn’t a standard K2, but actually NS 1600. This engine is not only preserved and built by the same manufacturer and works, but is practically a K2 albeit modified to operate in Holland (Where it still remains today in a railway museum).
That Makes Only Thomas and Toby The Dead Characters From The Steam Team, Because All The

Also funny fact, one of Porter’s siblings was turned into a replica of Thomas for a Day Out with Thomas event.

The engine is known as Burlington Eastern District Terminal 15 (B.E.D.T) which was purchased by Strasburg and arrived on May 9th 1998 before being rebuilt into Strasburg Thomas which still exists now although rumor or truth a supposed incident involving a test run of the rebuilt porter supposedly the eyes of the face had melted from the heat leaving 2 large holes where the eyes were which might have been why the face was revamped
Nia is based on a Kenya-Uganda Railway (KUR) ED1 class, a class of 2-6-2 tank locomotive built by Vulcan Foundry for the Kenya-Uganda Railway between 1926 and 1930. Primarily used for shunting duties, they were also used to haul branch line trains. They were later operated by the East African Railways and were reclassified as part of the EAR 11 class. One member of this class, No. 327, has been preserved

See, this is what we call a technicality, as Gordon is a fictional SECOND preserved A1/A3 befire Tornado was built. As in, he is explicitly remarked as one of the last in the RWS
No Gordon is still alive. Technically when news hit sodor of Gordon's Brothers and Sisters all being scrapped, Gordon felt sad and didn't want to pull the express for a few days. So the Fat Controller asked LNER for the Flying Scotsman to visit Gordon to cheer him up. We see this in the season 1 episode Tenders. Although we only see Flying Scotsman's two tenders.

The guy said that Gordon would still be alive if he was a real engine because he is pretty much the same model as the Flying Scotsman, but the Flying Scotsman is already a separate character in the RWS universe and even TTE. So irl Gordon would be dead

Edwards class is technically still alive because the workshop that made the K2’s made other K2’s that were sent to the netherlands. The only difference was that the Netherlands K2’s had different cabs
Not to mention only one member of Netherlands' K2's is preserved!

Merlin is actually The King Arthur class but the more accurate class was a war experimental engine by Oliver Bulleid which has 3 funnels and can create steam to "be invisible". (All of this information is from Thomas theorist's video called Rebbeca's family tree -Explained"
Are we not mentioning that the real merlin of the king arthur class was not the one to get the experiment and it was actually sir gillamere...i might have misspelled that

Kenji from the CGI era is based off the 0 Series Shinkansen, which was in service on the Tokaido Shinkansen line connecting Tokyo and Osaka from 1964 when the line first opened up until they were retired in 2008. Much like Hiro's basis D51 class locomotive, the 0 Series Shinkansen has been preserved at various museums and parks across Japan. The leading vehicle of a 0 Series Shinkansen is also preserved at the National Railway Museum in York, UK, and is the only 0 Series Shinkansen that is preserved in a museum outside of Japan.
While not a TTTE character, I also figured that Enmu from Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is also worth a shoutout here. The train used in the arc is based off the JGR Class 8620 2-6-0 steam locomotive, which were built between 1914 and 1929. Of the 672 manufactured, around 20 units have been preserved. Number 8620, the first engine of the class, is currently preserved at the Ome Railway Park in Ome, Tokyo, while number 8630 is preserved in working order at the Kyoto Railway Museum in Kyoto. In 2020 and 2021, 8630 was given a special 無限 (Mugen) nameplate and a special excursion train was ran to promote the movie as well.
4:01 Depends...if you count the dutch NS 1600 class then has one distant cousin survived (NRS 107) and is preserved in the Nederlands Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht. (Because both FR K2 und NS 1600 steam locomotives were built around the same time (1889-1903) and from the same builder (Sharp, Stewart and Company) and both look very similiar.
The Brighton Railway are probably still kicking themselves wishing they kept at least one E2 imagine the tourist revenue coming in

Those were Scrap Models from broken parts the crew had. I choose to believe Sir Topham Hatt would never scrap any engines, but maybe the Scrap Models could represent other scrapped engines from around the world that were brought to Sodor for what they usually use it for.
Sam is based on Virginian Railway's 2-6-6-6 AG class "Blue Ridges" built by Lima locomotive works in 1945. All of them were scrapped. None survived. However, four years before Virginian Railway bought the 2-6-6-6's, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway bought extreme similar H8 class 2-6-6-6 locomotives known as the "Alleghenies" built by the same workshop between 1941 and 1948, only two members of the class survived today.
Stephen was the opposite of conner where his body survived but not his tender

There are several other characters from the Christopher Awdry Railway Series books. Pip and Emma being Class 43 HSTs. Wilbert and Sixteen being Hunslet Austerity saddle tanks. Bear is a Class 35 Hymek. D199 looks like a Class 37. The Snowdon Mountain Railway locos also feature as Godred, Wilfred, Culdee and Lord Harry. The Talyllyn Railway's Tom Rolt also appears as Ivo Hugh. Ravenglass' Northern Rock stars as Jock, as well as one of their diesels as Frank. There is also Neil the Box Tank and mainline visitors Jinty and Pug, as well as Flying Scotsman. GWR autocoaches also appear as Isabel, Dulcie, Alice and Mirabel. Finally there is Bulstrode the boat. Preserved 488 Adams and SECR Ps Bluebell and Primrose also get a mention. Like City of Truro, they have no faces, though they never visit Sodor.
I don’t doubt you’ve already gotten a comment tell you this, but Donald and Douglas are *technically* Caledonian 652s. Although they look pretty much the same as 812s. Great video btw.

Edward and James are my two favorite characters, yes, it maybe sad that his basis were scrapped, but I am so proud that the NBR K class and the LNER D40 survived, but don't forget the LSWR T9 that's also preserved, it maybe slightly similar to FR K2, but see the T9's smokebox? It looks similar to Edward's, and also built in 1880's. you also forgot one Irish inside cylindered 2-6-0 Mogul that looked like James except Broad Guage is preserved, it's the Dublin and South Eastern Railway 15 and 16, only 461 (15) was preserved by Railway Preservation Society of Ireland, and I'm so proud of it.
One small correction regarding Henry, the photo shown next to him is actually a Standard 5. The most notable visual difference is the angle of the front of the cab - original Stanier designs had flat-fronted cabs, while their BR Standard redesigns have the front of the cab at a 45 degree angle from the side.

You do realize that the Black 5 and Standard 5 share much of their design, right? A rebuild could have easily been done. Or do you want to try insisting that Scotsman can only ever be designated as an A1 simply because its number wasn't changed after it was rebuilt into an A3?
@@VestedUTuber it would easily be possible but it would not be worth it because they had the same power classifcation and it would have to be in br days because that was when the standard 5 was built but then diesels started to roll out so it wouldn't really be worth it (if my spelling is of im sorry english is not my native language
The main way I tell them apart is the area between the smokebox and the buffer beam. All the BR standard designs have a steep slope with steps(?) on it.
That song at the end is so beautifully nostalgic for me. It’s from Gale of Darkness. Such a light hearted song, despite the game having a somewhat cryptic title.
Id choose douglas to survive. If not for him Oliver, Isabel and Toad woukdn't survive so hes always gonna be the better twin.

Its cool that the TVS Breakdown Train actually has a basis, I always just assumed that it was a freelance design made just for the show.
An argument on Donald and Douglas:
Unlucky Tug in his Thomas Debunked series said that Donald and Douglas weren't based on the 812 class, but on the 652 class. However, the two classes do look very similar in terms of design, so people may be forgiven for calling them 812's. The last of the real 652's built was numbered 57645, with Donald being numbered 57646 (the number Sir Topham Hatt the First ordered in the story Hullo, Twins) and Douglas likely being 57647 in The Railway Series.

NYC chairman Alfred E. Pearlman was determined to not have his company look old with just one steam engine remaining.
None of the New York central hudsons were preserved except for a converted tender from J-1d 5313, which is preserved at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Isn't City Of Truro meant to be the real life City Of Truro? In which case, should it really be considered to be 'based on' the same class of engine? That's just a nitpick, though, and I wonder if it also applies to Stepney.
Oh, and you forgot about Scruffy. Or is he basically the same as the other Troublesome Trucks?
By the way, the inclusion of Boulder was funnier at the end of the older version of this video, but still appreciated here.

@@camoshun1 I'm talking about a GOOD replica. One that has Thomas' face, but the build is very akin to the original LBSCR E2s. There are a lot of Thomas trains, but there are some that deviated too much from the original build; there are Thomases that have an American cuff, Thomases that have cow catchers, Thomases that are completely train engines altogether, but most are not like of similar build to the LBSCR E2.

The LNER D40 class resembles Edward while the NBR K class looks a lot like Molly, so on my watch, both Edward and Molly survived.
in my au edward looked like a real k2 but nr 1 wich was niels brother had gone mad and bashed himself into a munitions shed edward was nearby and badly damaged the tender was replaced due to it not being anymore but only ash and thats how we have the inacurate edward
Technically the Thomas engine still exists in replica for the day out with Thomas events.

I found a closer engine that represents Percy a little more. Yeah I’m telling the truth here. This engine is located at Clark’s trading Post (or Clark’s Bears) in New Hampshire. I’ve actually seen this engine several times before. This engine is a Baldwin tank engine built by the Baldwin locomotive Works. The only difference is that this engine has three domes. Also, there’s not the only Thomas character there’s also a real life Ferdinand as well. They have all three types of gear locomotives.

The Fowler 3F Jinty bears a similar design resemblance to the LBSCR E2. The 3f Jintys have surviving members
Donald & Douglas are based on the CR class 652 which is a subtype of the 812. This is backed up by the fact the last 652 number is No.57645 while Donald and Douglas are the fictional add-on No.57646 and No.57647 respectively. The 652's have stronger frames and a revised reversing rod shape but looks about the same as the 812's
So Donald and Douglas' basis being the 812 is technically correct but also technically not

Both Stanley and Stoner are based on a Baldwin Class 10-12-D 4-6-0 pannier tank engine
Smoother is based on a Dolgoch tank engine wich means he is Smudger and Rheneas brother so he preserved as well
Smuke is a small tank engine wich we can see on just one camera on night 6, if we click on him, he will disappear giving access to a cut scene. He is also based on a Prince engine but with a bunker instead of a tender
Jordan is also a Prince tank engine and he is one of the bully engines
Gerald is a blue tender engine but with 2 tenders instead of one and he is also based on a Prince engine
Both Albert and Proteus are based on a Sir Haydn engine
Adam is based on a Talyllyn engine, he is one of the bully engines
Daniel is based on a Midlander diesel engine and he is the last bully engine
Davenger is a Waldenburg tender engine
Ratchet is a prototype tank engine (I don't know his class name)
Steamer is also based on a Talyllyn engine

The real D51 numbered 51 was actually scrapped after deterioration, so we could say that Spencer finally got his way.

The non-Thomas fans have no idea what we would give to see some of these in person. If I had a time machine, I’d go back and make sure at least one of every model survived.
Gordon was rebuilt at crew making him look the way he is but I like the fact of him being a A0 and Henry technically was experimental but the best representation of a Lner A1 and a c1 Atlantic put together is the first prototype blueprint of the A0 since many people depict him with a 4-6-2 configuration which us the A0 prototype design so I guess there is a engine that Henry's experimental design was based on

I'll say this he's not entirely accurate to it but Henry's old shape is meant to be an Atlantic so I guess you could just put down the standard one with a curved firebox because henry was more like a mash up of that on a 4-6-2 chassie

last I checked Will, Grady & Corey were strictly fanon characters. The only garrat engine we ever see in the show officially was an East African Railways (EAR) 59 class named Kwaku.

8:05 the reason why they're is only 1 br class 28 diesel engine is because they were confirmed to have engine and starting problems with their class and one of the engines had overheated and burned the rails it was on and then it was scrapped this started the scrapping of the class 28 diesel class because of their bad fuel overheating engines.
