In this video I go into specifics as to what sort of things the XH2S resolved over the XT4 for my professional use. Anyone thinking about moving from an earlier Fuji model should find this video noteworthy.
I was wrong... the XH2S is indeed a worthy upgrade over the XT4.

Had the same experience with my XT4/XT3, so I was already on my way out of the XF system. With the XH2s, I don't have these issues any more, but there is still a lot of room for firmware improvements (tracking a person in a group or where others are around). The PASM dial allows ultra fast changes of the settings (sports > portrait). The Cfexpress card is great. Perfect grip, especially with heavier lenses. No MS needed anymore...
Yep, I really feel like the XH2S has saved me from jumping ship, had it not performed to my satisfaction I was going to list it all.
Nice video mate. I am the same. My heart wants my X-Pro3 to be able to never miss a shot in a high pressure situation, but my head knows that is just a dream. So, I did as you did, and got the XH2s. It is simply better on all fronts. Just amazing.

Hi Eddy. Great, well articulated analysis. I too have invested in the Fujifilm System but more for personal and travel use. I tend to use my Nikon system for paid work. Really nice to hear your analysis from a professional point of view. I agree that separate dials are wonderful when time is on your side, but PASM is critical for event work. I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my X-H1 to the new H-X2 but still hesitant due to price versus functionality. Would love the extra megapixels and better focusing but I got the X-H1 for a steal and the X-H2 seems a bit costly in comparison. I agree also with size comparison. I don't like the X-T series (too small for my liking). The real reason for choosing the fujifilm system was the size and weight of X-series lenses, not the camera.
Yeh, I do like the little fujicron f2 lenses, the 23/2 and 50/2 are lovely. It's nice that a system can have this, but also if you want a more 'full frame like experience' you can grab some weightier faster glass like the 50/1 etc.
I do also like the Jpgs, most of my event work is lightly retouching Jpgs which saves a MASSIVE amount of time for me, that's where I see most of the value. XH2S is also very competitive on the video side even when compared with FF, Flog2 is no joke, its really very good. Photography side... the APS-Cness still shows its flaws, the margin for error is much narrower.
Recommending Fuji as a system is a difficult thing. On the one hand, a beginner, someone who doesn't want to edit much but get nice pleasing shots, yeh... its not bad at all. But for pro use its quite hard and FF is more logical.
I think you'd like the XH2 (or XH2S) but yeh the price has to come WAY down for people like yourself who already have another system.

15:00 it is a challenge to capture NICE portrait of very devoted and engaged speaker when he is in his world. I mostly have weddings and priests are one of those speakers that often have eyes closed and numerous frames I take they look weird. It is fun to cull those images from ceremony where I realise that I took the far most images for lecture, not other moments where one or two is enough. It is essential that AF is not another layer of trouble here.

I own the xt3 and the face detect is decent. I tested it a few days ago on my father in the badly lit living room. I filmed three 3 minute clips and it lost him 3 times for a second or two. I used the Viltrox 56mm f1.4 for two clips and Viltrox 85mm f1.8 for one clip and was moving back and forth. The 56 did a better job and lost him just once under non ideal conditions. The 85 lost him a few times. The wider I go, the better it gets. The Viltrox 13mm and 23mm are both very good.
I don't understand how people get such bad results, but to be honest I never used the xt4 and xh2s, so there could be something related yo the specific firmware updates on these two cameras.
I never owned the XT3 but I have seen quite a bit of evidence that the XT4 was worse and the XT3 does better. XH2S has some help with the upgraded tech and definitely finds faces in the dark much better than the XT4. Honestly it could be that you have quite a capable AF camera, not much different to the XH2S in many ways, improvements here stem more from fps and buffer etc.
I still love my XH2S's tho, for what I do for work I really need that 6ms read out speed, where else am I going to find that at comparatively same prices?
Does the electronic shutter have added value? Eg requiring silence, photographing a speech, but in artificial light.

It is a keeper, I did spot a couple times it was losing me a tad during recording. It was on Auto Eye and I was moving my face a fair bit, the AF motor is audible as it struggles to keep up with micro movements, but I think it did ok. I will do another video with another lens soon to compare, the 23/2 or 50/2 perhaps...
I just checked prices of those cameras and realised XH2S is more expensive than XH2. Interesting. I wonder the AF and other stuff past the sensor being the same in both version or just "S" got those performance updates?
The sensor is different between the two. The XH2 sports a new 40mp sensor but the XH2S is a stacked 26mp (and this is what mainly accounts for the price increase).
Eddy what is your flash? With my XH2s I use the godox v1, and you know that the H2s can shoot flash at high speeds in electronic shutter? Hugs from Portugal. Thanks again 👌🥂📸
I typically just use AD200's, more often than not when it comes to flash use I will be in MS mode, because now the noise and stealth factor is not really an issue anymore.
Hey Eddie! Jumping on this video and a comment you made on a "pixel-shift" video.
I have a Ricoh GR3 and was actually looking at the XT5/XH2 as a second carry camera rather than a staying in the pentax line. This was really informative! Do you know if modern pentax cameras have the same film simulations the ricohs' or fujifilms have or did that feature not carry over to ricoh much like how the pixel shift didn't carry over to the ricoh.

Have you worked with either the XT5 and/or XH2 before? Does the pixel shifting stay consistent and clean when you crop in with the APS-C sensor as compared to the GFX when you "pixel-peep"?

No. Categorically. I have with me a GRIIIx & Pentax K3III, they have different profiles. Positive Film, Negative film for example belong on the GR and not the Pentax, but Pentax get SATOBI and Reverse Film which are quite nice. It's odd because the interface is extremely similar they really ought to work better together and share this stuff.

I believe the XH2 is kinda unique, it does a shutter speed of 1/180000sec in ES mode! I have since actually tested my XH2S and it seems to fire strobes in ES mode as well, though not sure what the results will be like. Pentax for sure can't shoot strobe in ES mode. I can't speak of the XT5 and its ES+Strobe performance or capability. I think the bigger question is why would you really need strobe+ES? The Pentax pixelshift is the only scenario I can really think where that would be useful, that would then combine things like still life in studio with pixelshift, could be neat! However, each time the strobe fires with pixelshift you'd need really accurate strobe power and not any variations, Godox might be too erratic a brand for that reliability.

Never used a XT5 or XH2, I researched them a fair bit and decided that the additional resolution seemed questionable, many videos exist where users of both cameras said they could not tell the difference in IQ between an XH2/XT5 and a XT4/XH2S, but of course there are those in other camps that swear by the difference . I decided AF meant more to me so XH2S was the way to go.

Pentax's pixelshift seems to be the real deal. X Trans has an issue, it needs 16 frames due to the X Trans sensor to complete vs just 4 frames with the Pentax, the margin of error is much lower with Pentax and the chance of some shutter or motion blur screwing things up with the GFX is high. However, Pentax's pixelshift kinda lifts the IQ up to the next sensor format IQ (and dynamic range) level, so K-1 gets roughly to a similar place to a 645Z/GFX50 with its pixelshift and a K3III gets to a K-1 etc. Of all the pixelshift features I believe Pentax and Olympus do it best, the others suck at it from both a performance and how you deal with it in post processing (need to use 3rd party software and not able to just use LR like normal etc).

You should try the subject detection on a Canon or Sony camera, be interesting to see if it does even better for your event work. I found it a noticeable step up from the xh2 (which itself is a noticeable step up from the xt4) but unsure how they compare to the xh2s.
I am not under any false notion that Fuji are better than the big players for AF. I was scraping by with the XT4 but when I thought that spending an additional $1-1.5k (trade in) for better AF to see me through the rest of the years work.. it just made sense being this heavily invested to try that at least. It's funny, I joined Fuji originally based on value but here I am now with quite an expensive camera indeed! That's how they suck you in! 😄
I really do feel adequately looked after now in the AF department, something I couldn't quite admit to myself with the XT4. It's nice to have Fuji colours with decent AF, finally.
@@SummersSnaps yeah, I hear you. That is the same problem I faced. In fact, the Fuji is the more expensive option now. The xh2s is more expensive than the Sony a7i. I’d love to see them tested back to back in a challenging environment like a dimly lit event given they are so similar in price, size, and experience. I assume AF would be close.
By the way, my neighbour has your old xt4 and loves it.
@@anthonystonehouse I think common sense should prevail and FF systems become the logical choice, this is still APS-C after all. I think you have to be a bit crazy and really like those native Jpgs, for me its become actually pretty important to my workflow, many of the images in this video are lightly retouched Jpgs rather than working from scratch with RAWs. I feel like once Canikony get some interesting native profiles then perhaps Fuji lose a little of their magic allure. It is true, so many videos pick up on it whereby the non Fuji shooting an X100V or something really is enjoying this kind of 'in camera fuji LUTlike rendering' experience.
But I guess I left out a huge chunk of the true power of the XH2S which is of course video.

all I want to know is can you change exposure while shooting, fast? I have found the retro buttons on my XT3 great for just dialling the exposure up or down. I'm in the process of trying to work out if I should buy an XT5, XH2 or XH2s. I shoot wildlife nature and kids on the go

Absolutely, but this will depend on your personal preferences of how you like to set up the camera. I am a working professional, I NEED to be able to change exposure fast, especially in concerts and other environments where light can change suddenly. Changing exposure fast has never been a problem for me on any camera because I tend to predominantly work in Aperture Priority mode and designate the rear command dial to being EV Compensation. In fact, in a previous XT4 video I made I talked about how I disliked the dedicated EV Compensation dial because it was so STIFF, it was unusable for me because its such an integral feature it must be hassle free and a breeze to change otherwise the whole experience is nerfed. So going to an XH2S where the dedicated EV compensation dial was omitted was never a problem for me because I knew I would designate the rear command dial for this purpose anyway (like I eventually had to with the XT4).
So for my XH2S, in Av mode, I choose to use the aperture ring or front command dial to change aperture, rear command dial to change exposure/EV Compensation (thus it would change shutter speed and/or ISO depending on whether you have opted for Auto ISO or not). All you need to be aware of is as you use the EV Compensation just keep an eye on your shutter speeds and ISO it spits back at you and whether they are acceptable or not. There are three Auto ISO modes in the XH2S that allow for parameter's such as upper and lower ISO limits as well as minimum shutter speeds. With some logical applications you can pretty much live in constrained Auto ISO's that serve you well for the work you undertake.

Which lenses are a reliable match for the XH2s' AF at events?
So what is quite nice is that a few users are reporting older lenses to be doing quite a bit better with the AF on the XH2S than other cameras. So in many ways the XH2S is giving older lenses a new lease of life. If you want to be safe however, any LM lens will do really well, and the three Fujicron F2 lenses (23/2, 35/2 and 50/2) will also perform excellent.
I would imagine the new 56/1.2 WR to do just ok, it missed out on Linear Motor so that will cause it to underperform, and lenses like the fast 50/1 may wobble a little more for AF confidence.
Personally I use the 16/1.4, 23/2, Touit 32, 50/2 and 90/2 for my event work and they all do great.
@@SummersSnaps oh I sold my touit 32mm together with my xt100.. the idea was a compact retro setup, but the keeper rate was very very bad. Luckily it'll anyway take a while before I can afford an XH2s :D
I guess for field sports the AF is not there yet, but anyone serious about that already has a Canon or Sony anyway

What really bugs me about fujifilm af (apart from it being complete trash) is that you have to buy their absolute top of the line speed machine with a stacked aps-c sensor, which should have the read out speed of warp 8, in order to get a AF-system that's close to what the competition had 3-4 years ago.
I would likely agree with that statement had I had the chance to play with some of the other main player cameras. For me the XH2S represents the only camera that is keeping me in camp Fuji, it might not be the best camera, or most reasonably priced, but it is supporting me enough now to get the job done without a lot of stress. I am not sure any other camera Fuji has to offer could say the same.
