  • This is part of a collaboration with Cult Popture! They've got a whole playlist of videos focused on Hayao Miyazaki's work which you can check out here: • The Director Project: ...
I've always wanted to do a proper video essay. I watch a lot of them myself, but personally I find it to be a hard leap up trying to find meaning or a point to make about a specific scene or motif. That being said, this film is perfect for the kind of artsy feel I was going for, and though I only really have a couple of odd references, hopefully this video did a fairly good job of what it wanted to. More than anything, I guess this came out more as a kind of expression of feelings, which in itself could be seen as equally valid in regards to discussing the magic of Hayao Miyazaki's work and their legacy. I dunno. It's all about politics and the message of the film. That's what I was going for. Yeah. Just went on a bit of a ramble as I went about it haha. Can you tell this kinda format doesn't come quite so easily to me hahahah

@Shaman X You're right in that sense, yeah. I should have explained better. The Movie was finished long before Miyazaki had finished writing the manga, and the movie has lots of aspects to it that significantly simplify the story and events that are shown in the manga. The manga also fleshes out the entirety of the ancient society, the wars, the other clans, and all of the main characters.

Animation can be really artistic and beautiful. You are right when you talk about a grass field never looking so good in real life. I think the beauty of Miyazaki is his color palletes and his use in telling us about the natural world and the technological world, and how sometimes those colors mesh well or not on screen.

Thank you, Dazz, for making this video. I've recently been going through every Studio Ghibli film, which of course means a lot of Hayoa Miyazaki's work, and I always find myself coming back to Nausicaä. I was never able to really put it into words as to what I truly loved about this film and what I felt whenever I watched it, but you have been able to capture that for me. I genuinely love this movie to death, and I'm super happy you made a video on it. I like the essay format! It seems a bit sporadic and still a bit like your other videos, but it's still quite good. As someone who preaches the gospel of Nausicaa depicted in the manga, I can say this.
One of the core theme of this story is, "Is it the responsibility of the descendants to burden the mistakes of their ancestors?"
I believe this really resonates with the younger generations now more than ever, why the fuck do we have to wipe the asses of the generations before us who took everything for granted and left us a world brink of the biggest shit storm to hit the fan...
"It's fine"........... That meme speaks for itself for this situation, but really it's not fine.
And you get what Nausicaa's answer to it is, not in the film but in the manga and seriously it's worth the read to find out.

I read the manga last week for my first time and I'd say that it mostly expands on the work, even though it introduces some significant changes in the structure. To me, the messages remained pretty much the same but it was set to a more complicated and diversified backdrop. So it's more world building and more nuance.

The manga questions everything inside the world of Nausicaa. Nausicaa's relationship and ideology about nature, the necessity of violence, humanity's past actions, the use of power, the changing humanity (both their way of life and themselves, literally). It's an epic story.

The Nausicaa manga was Miyazaki's masterwork.
      There. I said it.
I know, he's had a brilliant career since then. But no other project of his had characters as compelling, a world as detailed and breathtaking, and a story as meaningful, deep, and complex. The movie tries to pack an epic masterwork in two hours, and it does a respectable job, but the manga totally outdoes the movie, Laputa, and Mononoke.

I believe the “ability to build the technology albeit in a post apocalyptic world” that you like and praise, is actually technology that was lost for good. In the end credits, you see kids practicing with non-engined kite versions of Nausica’s Mehve glider. The Valley of Wind made these practice gliders, but they do not have the technology to reproduce the Mehve. That tech was excavated from an older more advanced society.
Tormekiah is the military power house, but cities like Pejite thrived because they were able to built excavate these “artifacts” from a former advanced civilization.
It was going well until they excavated the god soldier that was way too powerful, thus incurring Tormekiah’s wrath.
In the original comic, Tormekiah finds this out because of their spies, and actually both Pejite and the Valley of Wind are Vassal nations under Tormekia’s rule.
In the comics, when Tormekiah calls upon an old agreement and summons all the fiefdoms under it’s control, including the Valley of Wind, to partake against it’s war against the Dorg (a third faction that only exists in the comics) you’ll see all the gunships are “rickety” and best repaired as possible to each fiefdom’s capacity, but the ancient ways are lost and we see current civilization basically duct taping and substituting an Ohmu’s discarded shell’s eye bulb as a material, etc. to best keep what ever tech they dig up serviceable. The civilization in Nausicaa, isn’t thriving, they are slowly dying and offsetting that by leveraging any ancient tech they can dig up and “patch up” with their own medieval technology.
If you do read the comics (7 books, the movie is a re-imagined alt version of the first 2 books). There is a fourth faction, the “forest people” who are humans who are able to live within the poison forest, and basically Miyazaki’s Equivalent of the Fremen from Dune.
The comic ending is quite surprising and inline with the later Dune books.
So give it a read if you can

It's no coincidence that I love both of those pieces of media so much though, since Alex Preston, the creator of hyper light drifter has said what a monumental inspiration Nausicaa was for the world of HLD. The two works are incredibly similar visually and thematically, and stir emotions in me that manage to make me cry if I'm in the right mood.

    • @linkthepig4219
      @linkthepig4219 3 роки тому +4

The virus really doesn't mean anything in the bigger picture, and nature is still definitely better than man. But, the thing is, nature is FAR more complex than 'haha cute gud deer bad spooder'. Nature can be talked about for hours on end, but humanity will always be insignificant, even if we somehow destroy the whole world. We need to understand, shown in films like this and Princess Mononoke, and in games like Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time, that earth isn't so black and white. Nature is good and man is bad, but that doesn't mean humans are the only negative species ever, and it doesn't mean we should ignore real climate issues because 'oh I care I promise', and it doesn't mean animals can't suffer in nature. The coronavirus is devastating to us humans, but not a huge metaphorical paradox or anything.

My best advice for people with a lot of climate anxiety, as someone who's been there: find something small and local to contribute to. If you can't find anything on your own, there are websites that can help match you up with different volunteering opportunities in your area.
About a year ago, I had wholeheartedly flung myself into the "zero waste" movement, and it was making me miserable. I was constantly thinking about how I could "do better," agonizing over every piece of trash I threw away, just generally ruining my own mental health by holding myself to impossible standards.
So I went online, and I found out that there was a group working to get rid of invasive species in a local park, and now I spend a couple hours doing that roughly twice a month. It helps so much. I'm doing something where I can actually see the impact I'm having, plus spending time out in nature.
It's made me more passionate about environmental causes because I can see how things can get better, all I need to do is take a walk from the part of the woods that has been restored to the parts we haven't gotten to yet. It's not super fast, this group has been working for over five years and are only just now starting to finish clearing out the honeysuckle from this one small-ish park, but it is progress, and it's progress that I can see that I've contributed to.
So if you're feeling hopeless about the environment, find something small and local that you can contribute to. It doesn't have to be clearing out invasive species like I do, it can be something else, that plays to your strengths. Maybe you're good with people, so community organizing or more direct political stuff is more your style. Maybe you'd rather be involved with animals than with plants. Who knows? But whatever it is, go out and find it. I promise it will make a world of difference.

I find beauty in the radio-active remains because of the sense that despite how much all those items in the stores were prized and sought after.. when the SHTF it all becomes worthless to the people who just want to live - and realize all this junk is useless to them...

I love the fallout comparison. As i recently got into fallout, I started thinking of comparing the two with my friends.
My favorite part of nausicaa was the insects mainly the Ohmus. Even as a kid. As a kie it was like godzilla with 20 eyes and it had infinite alternative accounts. As an adult, I still love the coolness factor but it's so interesting to see how they behave when not enraged. Hell they're herbivores. They examine humans and are concious and intelligent enough to recognize human sacrafice and sincerity, and kind ebough to pay back that sacrafice in kind. But the protection of nature's purification and its guardians take priority.

One of the hints of the lore which people who didn't read the manga often missed, is that, the mask is hilariously useless considering how character's skin is visibly exposed to the toxin. And if ancient people could made Giant Warriors, of course they can make the forrest.
Nausicaa isn't a tale of environmentalism, it's a story about how to be kind in an unkind world, and we all can make decision for ourselves.

    Miyazaki style:
    1. Womens strong, but humans.
    2. Nature: Gaia and powerfull ever (more than humans)
    3. Background and stories: Colors, forms, steampunk, dystopic, Female Kingdoms, and not moral but ever respectfull for all lives (human or not human)
I agree 90% of your analyze about Miyazaki worksart.

I've heard the demons are inside us spiel many times but its just one of those things people say but doesn't actually mean anything, what he has done is lulled you into a suspension of disbelief with the movie and then talked about something thats needs suspension of disbelief to work. I'd be more interested if he outlined some actual ways to go around fixing things than just saying, "Ok hive minded people do your thing.". Most people already know about climate change or the meat industry, awareness isn't the issue, he is contributing to the problem of people just talking about it and doing nothing or forgetting about it by posting this video. The video where the latter half is dedicated to calling it out. Ironic.

I think the most important thing is that Miyazaki is absurdly bitter and grumpy as a person, but none of his films are. Even tragic films like Graveyard of the Fireflies aren't grumpy; sad, but not punky and edgy. It constantly feels like he wants things to change, things that affected him and made him who he is today, and though he cannot change himself anymore, he tries to make films that can at least promote a better society before more people go irreversibly bitter like him.

    • @budakbaongsiah

Miyazaki didn't make Fireflies. Not all Ghibli films are made by Miyazaki.
The bitterness was poured into the manga version of this film.

Im terrified of what's happening to the planet.
And I know I can't do anything, that I would if I had the means or if there was a big enough movement that could reach me...
But there's no movements I can reach. I'm on the edge of poverty, barely staying above it or maybe skimming below, so I don't have the means. I live, am trapped, as an adult in an area with views deep in the red. I know what's happening and that the people in power won't do anything.
So I try to ignore it, so I don't see my death coming.
