    Hi paul, I am looking at getting a nest, i seen some installation videos that the nest uses the original wires to connect to, you say you have the nest on a stand now but how does the nest connect if it is not connected via the original thermostat wires or does the white boxes in the cupboard bypass this and make it all wireless

      The Nest is in a stand, with a micro USB cable to a power plug/socket.
      It connects via WiFi to the white box which is attached to the boiler. If your WiFi connection becomes unavailable, you can use the white box as an on/off switch for the heating.

      So the
      Wires to the standard thermostat are not used?

      @@stuartc1986 correct. Where my downstairs thermostat was, I've removed it, put insulating tape on the wires and have put a blanking plate over the hole :-)

    Hi Paul, how did you install a second nest thermostat without mounting to a wall?? Thank you

    • @TechboyUK
      @TechboyUK  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Zixuan, Initially both of my nest thermostats were mounted to the wall (in place of the standard thermostats that already existed).
      Later, I took the first (downstairs) nest thermostat off the wall (it just pulls off) and placed it in a nest thermostat stand store.google.com/gb/product/nest_thermostat_3rd_gen_stand. It connects to a plug socket via a supplied USB cable. It's really easy and doesn't require any tools or configuration.
      I then covered the gap where the original thermostat was with a blanking plate amzn.to/2LZCcLl
      The main reason I moved it was because it was originally positioned on the wall in my hallway, next to my front door. In Winter, I would open my front door and the hallway would instantly get very cold (especially when leaving it open for a few minutes when trying to get Rebecca and the 2 children and a children's pushchair in/out of the house). With the nest in the living room, the temperature around it is far more constant.

    Hi Paul, what was the actual issues the engineer raised for having the thermostat on the 2nd floor?

    • @TechboyUK
      @TechboyUK  4 роки тому

      Hi Peter, My house has 3 floors, let's call them ground, floor 1 and floor 2.
      It has 2 heating zones with a thermostat for each. One zone covers the ground floor, the other zone covers floors 1 and 2.
      I have replaced the original thermostats on the ground floor and floor 1, with nest thermostats.
      I would like a third zone (i.e. a thermostat to control just the radiators on the 2nd floor), but 2 plumbers have told me that it would be a lot of work (and cost) to get this set up, in terms of plumbing and electronics, so it wouldn't be financially feasible. It's a shame because we basically never use the gust bedroom on floor 2 and I use the home office 1-2 days a week, but for this I use an oil heater rather than use the radiators for floors 1 and 2.

      Paul Richardson Hi Paul, what kind of plumbing problems were raised as I am currently having my house renovated which includes a loft and thinking of having it in it own zone with a nest thermostat. I was wondering if the problem was to do with how you run your central heating circuit?

      @@petert1027 I don't know. Both plumbers said that it would need investigation, which would involve digging up floorboards, etc.

    Hello Paul, i have the same arrangement at home, but using only one controller box in the heating system, i believe that is what is causing some overheating problema in our place. Do you thing is possible you share a pic of the wiring from the two boxes to the heating system?, would be really useful to check that, Thanks a lot!

      and do you have any idea why is there only one cable coming out of the new thermostat heat link instead of two as in the old version? Could be that the cable that goes to the new one is only for power? Thanks
