I ate there many times in 2018, of course, before covid. Prices were very reasonable. Weekend special Thalis were only Rs 150. No Garlic, Sathvik food. Enjoyed it very much. Iyengar special meals. Rs 550 is easily affordable for me but probably quite steep for many living there, perhaps. In your reviews, it will be very beneficial if you note whether Garlic is in the dishes.
Thaligai food quality was once upon a time awesome. Thanjavur mess food is now better. Sorry for this comment. It's my personal view based on quality of food only.
Last time we visited this place , took a lot of time for seating. Also items mentioned in the menu were not served. Half of them were not served. It’s pricey too.
I am a true food lover, by seeing this plantain leaf authentic traditional food really impressed to taste once, but the price wise it is on higher side it should be some where between 250-400 Rs, it is my personal opinion 😢
Thanks for your feedback. Like you, many people have mentioned about the price. If Thaligai team looks at these comments, I’m sure they will do something about it.
Exorbitant and superhyped. Rs550 for Veg thali is absolutely not worth it. Have tasted excellent authentic Udupi thalis for Rs 250 in mathsaya and other udupi resturants. Further, none of the dishes are are authentic iyengar delicacies. First, typical iyengar cuisine will not incorporate english vegetables like carrot, beans etc. Puliodarai, katharikai pullipu kootu, kalyana sathamudhu, iyengar morkulambu, iyengar vallaikai podi, thirukanamudhu, dhamroot are must for iyengar kalyana thaligai. What you showed as koshmalli is actually gose poriyal!!!! People are using iyengar as a brandname and fooling everyone. I have tasted here. The cost is exorbitant the food is nowhere close to iyengar thaligai. It is like selling chicken puffs in iyengar bakery.
Interesting. I agree with you on your point about the pricing, VFM etc., When it comes to Iyengar wedding lunch, Kosh Malli has become a standard item with many of the Iyengar caterers nowadays. It could be due to the adoption of Karnataka's Kosambari. Some are offering Vazhakai Podi Karamuthu. For one variety rice dish, either Puliyodharai or Bisibelaabath or even Malli sadam is offered as choices by some caterers. By the way, if we are talking about English vegetables, even "tomato" sathamudhu, "beans" paruppu usili is non-native. :) Dumroot, like Bisibelabath is again a Karnataka (Udupi) dish. I am sure, you would agree on the influence of vegetables or dishes from other states or other countries in a regional cuisine, is a perpetual phenomenon.
Its marriage thaligai. Beans Paruppu usili will always be there in Muhurtham samayal. Even in my marriage I added and since I was child I had eaten Beans paruppu usili. But I agree with cabbage, it usually in dinner food. No pullippu koottu I agree authentic iyengar smayal. replaced lemon rice with Puliyodharai. Plantain podimass got replaced with Cabbage here. We need to agree that they cannot serve same food everyday right. It depends upon the day we go to this restaurant.
Not sure why many people talk about the price. its a business and they are not running charity. If we can afford the price, we can have it else we can ignore it. this is not the only restaurant who are serving this food. here we need to talk only about the taste and/or we can say its worth the price after we eat.
Exactly. When it comes to South Indian meals, people have a pre-conceive notion that anything beyond ₹70-80/- is expensive and worthless. So many factors constitute this pricing and as long as the food is good and one can afford it, go for it. Surprisingly, nobody questions/complains on the pricing, when they pay for a pizza or a burger or asks a wedding caterer to provide an elaborate wedding meal only at 80/-.😀

@@foodNfoodonly In 550 Rs or even less, my entire family can eat one full day. When you include more number of verieties in a single food, psychologically a hipe is created for the value of the food. But in reality, when there are many items the intake of each item will be too little. Afterall it's the same stomach. Technically speaking the increase in value will be only marginal.

Thanks for taking time and leaving your feedback. By Thanjavur Mess, did you mean the one in Mambalam? Yes, I agree, they serve great food.

I haven't been to their T.Nagar branch. If the Thaligai management is reading this,
I am sure they will do the required to address your concerns.
Too much costly for a meal
How much would be the optimal price for a wedding meal/thali like this?
Very very costly not worthy of this much pricing
How much did you pay and which meal you had?
550 is top much and day robbery.
What would be the appropriate price for a special/wedding meal, according to you?
