Absolutely. What made a story like addicted or the very different remake stay with me is the social content and context. China would make amazing BLs. Just look how intense and meaningful the relationship is in word of Honour or the chemistry and deep love in the spirealm. Even the really low budget student films out there have a wonderful story at the core. I'd love to see something like lighter and princess or find yourself but in BL genre. I am sure they would do excellent slice of life BL.

Definitely!! He's the best actor even thou I didn't even know him at all since he came from movies and I hardly watch movies. Not tall, not handsome and can act and that hotel fight scene was so done soooooo well. Amazing actor!!!
I really wish someone would give Huang Jingyu a chance to play a character that undercuts his “Big Strong law enforcer” typecast; it would be so interesting and I think even he would enjoy it. All humans are complex and have other sides to them, so it would be so sweet to see him play someone more soft or even more flamboyant or disobedient. Maybe he’d need to play a villain, I don’t know, sometimes villains are allowed more freedom to express themselves. But just think of Hugh Jackman from Wolverine, he was also wonderful in The Greatest Showman, and we can see that both the tough side and the flamboyant side are a part of him. It’s possible Jingyu’s acting felt a little lacking because by now he’s acting in his comfort zone, so he doesn’t have to push so hard to make creative choices; but if he got a role that’s very different from his norm, then we would get the chance to see him use his creativity in action. And I REALLY want to see that from him. I have been rooting for him since Addicted and I think I always will.
Like you said Huang Jingyu obviously knows people like to see him with guys, like addicted was so huge and is still so huge that in just the last year we've got two new adaptations (one chinese and one thai) because it's a "classic" like that. I agree with your read that he just have that natural chemistry with guys that looks cool of really intense friendship that you can imagine to be more. I know he's not the best actor out there but still he's got a special place in my heart as one of the actors of one of my fav drama in my teenage years
Zhang Yu is, and excuse my french, flipping fantastic!! I adore his role as Jiang Xiaohai soooooo much. Like you said, a brilliant character in both the written and performance form. I think Huang Jingyu is great, he played a pretty chill dude which is like a breath of fresh air, considering, he is, you know, Huang Jingyu. Wang Ziqi's arc didn't get fleshed out so much as I had hoped, but in the little moment it did, his performance was just absolutely great (Kind of makes me yearn for more). He played this character to the brilliant level of nuance that it deserves. Once again, Zhang Yu is so amazing. Is it bad that I find his character kind of adorable? (It probably is bad :D). But I'm all for the bad guys that makes me feel conflicted. I think, the actors that need to step up actually did, combined with a brilliant script and the 90s nostalgic bait and we have a quietly endearing drama on our hands

i've watched 12 eps so far and i'm absolutely loving it! this show has me stressed, i'm so paranoid one of them is gonna get killed- if they all make it to the end i'll be shook. the fight scenes are so damn good, love it. the most shippable characters are def bei ge and xiaohai, omg i love them.
You are right. I can't remember a drama with this cohesive script. Also, all guys from main leads to some small gangsters have excellent clothes. Like normal, but so well fitting, good materials, well-matched colours. Even those very fat or that one guy who looked like skeleton, had these types of clothes, which complimented their figure 😂

Huang Jingyu actually has an amazing chemistry with Xin Zhilei in Lost Identity. Maybe because she comes across as a very strong charismatic woman. And I was nicely surprised by his acting. Not perfect for sure but so much better than what I remembered from other shows he was in. The First Shot was already on my to-watch list but your review makes me want to watch it even more.

I have to hand it to Ms X for analysing things for us. I was wondering why Huang Jingyu looks more at ease in this drama compared to those with a female lead. For that matter, I never sensed any chemistry vibes between him and any opposite sex. Now in this drama, he is like….wow….does he really need to hug that chemistry guy so hard in the finale??? Do guys in real life hug like that? He placed both arms around him and held him close! 😝😝😝

OMG....It's the first series of him that I was able to finish and it definitely wasn't because of him. hahaa...This series is not bad since most of the actors were so natural and can be funny so it's not that to be finish unlike his other series. The best actor as I said was that bad guy, he's an amazing talent. While I was the series, mainland always label these actors CP whatever whatever they kept on mentioning on male CP so after that series ended I was thinking WTH are they talking about. So he did a gay series to kick star his career. No wonder and then I watch his gay series on utube and I was like OMG...No wonder everyone says he has better chemistry with male costars. The show when they broadcast, kissing scenes were cut so when you watch the bloopers, he did seem like he's interested in men....way too serious w/the kissing and long and touch body parts butt touching esp on one and they cut alot so who knows where else he touched. ahhahah lol...Anyway, I did glimpsed his series w/VICTORIA and even thou there were kissing scenes are such there is NO chemistry as they say. Nothing that you can tell that he is in love w that girl for 1000 years. I did notice that too on the final scene w the professor. It's like you haven't even seem him hug hard w/women right? That's why sometimes you gotta wonder if they are bi w/that kind of behavior w the same sex. 🤣😂

Huang Jingyu is one of the most charismatic actors of his generation.He is great in action roles.The first shot is a very “normal” show, not glamorous at all , regarding the scene , costumes, nevertheless it is a very enjoyable show..

Huang Jingyu is a muscular actor, he’s not a soft face in romantic scenes, so as an actor must do good in both, that’s why his acting skills not match sometimes , some drama after I watched it still reminds me and stayed in my head for a while but all his drama for me was different easily to forget and never finished it always, so boring for me, sorry don’t kill me this is my true feelings.

I think the only gripe i might have about this show is actually how they overexaggerate the effects of the drugs. Yeah, i understand it's the point of it and drugs are that bad but they seem to overact how the addicts behave. It's not always people trying to attack and bite you.
This is so funny seing people shipped them lol I personally can't really watch any Huang Jingyu drama that he plays with a girl cause his chemistry in Addicted was just the best and i'm such a huge fan of that series i read the novel twice already. also because every role he plays is always either police or military related making it hard to separate him from Gu Hai. Lots of rumours were going around back then i think there where also a rumour about one of the guy having a relationship with the author of the book the drama was based on (like sugar babby situation) but it was so unclear cause everything was hush hush

While I’m enjoying the First Shot, and the police team’s dynamic is entertaining… a minor criticism I have is the “Southern” Cantonese accent is ughh. Aside from the one bald drug thug which I recognize is regularly cast in TVB background bad guy roles, the rest of the main cast trying to throw in a few Cantonese words, really butchered the words at times and speaking with a clearly mainland accent. They could have hired a plenthora of native Hong Kong/Guangdong area actors that are in Chinese dramas constantly get grilled for not having a “standardized Mandarin accent”…William Chan, Raymond Lam, Xu Kai, come to mind…

Samantha Ko and Benz Hui are support roles, and I was like yesss! Finally I can understand their Canto!! Zhou Yu Tong is surprisingly only a 'Guest role' actress in it, but her acting and story line was much more Interesting than the lead actress.

Huang Jingyu est génial ! Il incarne à la perfection les valeurs de la police chinoise. Outre ses talents indéniables d'acteur, il fait lui-même les scènes de combat avec ses compétences en ju-jitsu, sans compter sa belle musculature 🫣.
La relation entre Zheng Bei (Huang Jingyu) et Xiaohai est d'une intensité qui nous tient en haleine du début jusqu'à la fin. La série est tellement proche de la réalité. J'ai adoré et j'attendais avec impatience l'épisode suivant. Je n'ai pas où m'empêcher de payer pour regarder en avance les 4 derniers épisodes.
I recently finished Are You the One, and then read the novel. I thought it was very entertaining and enjoyed it. Loved both the ML and FL. It was my first Zhang Wan Yi drama and I became an instant fan. I also loved The Double. I was reading a version of the novel on line, thinking that it was finished because the translation started in the summer of 2019, but FIVE YEARS LATER and it's only 131 chapters. I am so annoyed. I mean, what? It's going to take another 5 years to get the next 130 chapters?? 10 years to translate a novel? Why bother?
Both main leads in ‘addicted’ couldn’t see each other, even prohibited to stay in the same building for 7 years. Now the duration ended. I am very curious if we can see them together
@@en5333 bias aside. She maybe coming from the fact that Huang Jingyu can only really play well in cop/military roles with huge budget (he is well-connected), so his acting is nothing special to see. His muscle is nothing new.

The first time I saw Johnny Huang was with the series Addicted and I loved this actor.
Like "under the skin" and "Desire Catcher." I don't care, I shipped them like crazy. In my heart, they're couples!

Zhang Yu is superb. The complexity of his character, how he plays with some many personality layers and still seems coherent all the time. Fabulous!

While I’m enjoying the First Shot, and the police team’s dynamic is entertaining… a minor criticism I have is the “Southern” Cantonese accent is ughh. Aside from the one bald drug thug which I recognize is regularly cast in TVB background bad guy roles, the rest of the main cast trying to throw in a few Cantonese words, really butchered the words at times and speaking with a clearly mainland accent. They could have hired a plenthora of native Hong Kong/Guangdong area actors that are in Chinese dramas constantly get grilled for not having a “standardized Mandarin accent”…William Chan, Raymond Lam, Xu Kai, come to mind…
But none of those guys are the age or talent to play that role. The Cantonese is not good, but it's a minor part of the character.
@GreyHippo yes, which is why I said it's minor. Still an enjoyable drama overall. Just my opinion as a Cantonese speaker... they tried, but it sounds funny.
Hahaha ngl as a Cantonese speaker it is so cringe and distracting. Some of them are so bad to the point where I have to stop the drama to read subtitles because I have no idea what they're trying to say LOL.
@@grammarnazi12Same I had to pause at times too. Esp the 'tongue twister' part. I'm watching "In Between" c drama. Zhou Yu Tong is a lawyer who moves to HK, lots of peopld cheating in this drama. Samantha Ko and Benz Hui are support roles, and I was like yesss! Finally I can understand their Canto!! Zhou Yu Tong is surprisingly only a 'Guest role' actress in it, but her acting and story line was much more Interesting than the lead actress.

It's one big case that they unravel little pieces of it along the way. It's seems realistic to how police work would be.
Any good recent costume drama to watch?
I recently finished Are You the One, and then read the novel. I thought it was very entertaining and enjoyed it. Loved both the ML and FL. It was my first Zhang Wan Yi drama and I became an instant fan. I also loved The Double. I was reading a version of the novel on line, thinking that it was finished because the translation started in the summer of 2019, but FIVE YEARS LATER and it's only 131 chapters. I am so annoyed. I mean, what? It's going to take another 5 years to get the next 130 chapters?? 10 years to translate a novel? Why bother?
