This is heartbreaking. I use old hickory knives exclusively in my kitchen, my mother used only old hickory and she still has the old hickory knife that my grandmother purchased during the depression and used all her life. To call me loyal to the brand is an understatement... a good cast iron skillet and an old hickory knife will last you a lifetime if cared for properly. Im 42 myself but I feel like many of the younger people are just to stupid to understand how to maintain the old fashioned and better cookware.

My first knife was a beat up Old Hickory I found in a rusty old ammo can. It was the coolest thing a boy could find. I showed my dad and he said I could have it if I cleaned it up and learned how to sharpen it. Ever since then I've been a knife nut, and its so sad to see Ontario go.

They are just a thirty minute drive from me here in Northern PA and the region will feel the loss of those jobs. It happened quickly so perhaps Cutco or Case/Zippo can keep part of the brand and absorb some of the craftsmen.

Oh, no! That's sad news. I hate to see the end of another USA knife manufacturer. I like their knives as they were very affordable, and well-built for the price. Time to pick up a few before they are all sold out. Thanks for the heads up, my friend.

When Scrade was sold back in the early 2000s, Taylor Made Brands only purchased the brand/names. The tooling in New York was never purchased by Taylor Made Brands. That's when all production was moved overseas.

Cold Steel, despite being an American company, has never (to my knowledge) had their own facility in the states. They’ve contracted domestic OEMs at times to make their products, but the overwhelming majority of their knives have been made in Taiwan and Japan.

Damn shame...all of our historical knife manufacturers are disappearing. We don't produce much in the U.S. anymore, so every company we lose hurts even more. I wish the best to all of their employees...would've been cool if they could've raised the funds to buy the company and start a knife cooperative.

Imperial , Schrade, Camillus , K- Bar , and Ontario . This country is just about over and done . The new generation couldn't care less about the products these companies manufactured. And what about all of the firearms companies that are now foreign owned . Several generations of craftsmen worked at these companies. Go offshore and pay no taxes. Gibson refused and look what happened to them . Bammer closing our last lead foundry. McNamara closing Springfield Armory . Amazon and trump and others don't pay a single dollar in tax and I have to pay 49 & 1/2 % ! 10 million dollars a day going to izahell. Money pouring out of here going overseas . No factories. Can't win a war without an industrial base. Building up china and destroying our nation . Had enough yet ?

I suppose the price of steel? Just the raw materials needed are the source of problem? When you have lower overhead and nake a descent knife, for example crkt etc,i understand the problems with ,taxes in naterials etc,um our government needs to fix this stuff? I know some companies mismanagement etc, plays a huge role not adjusting to market, designs etc.

Yup I picked up a Rat one in D2 steel before they are gone. I did. Not know Old Hickory was part of OKC. Kudos to our government for continuing to make policies that our destroying America. And to the big corporations that are destroying small businesses. The little guy can’t compete with China. I do pay more for made in America for the one reason of keeping production alive in America. The other unfortunate reality is the infatuation of super steels, that are not all infinitely better than the old standard 1095, 440C or equivalent stainless steels. But everybody want the Tesla, albeit the Toyota will run without a hitch for ever. America used to produce tools products that were the envy of Japan & Germany. Corporate greed, and the every day working man trying to save a Buck have led to our own downfall.

You know, all these old companies that are failing have some things in common. For one thing, they make cheap knives. Another common problem is that they don’t produce newer models. They solely rely on the cheapest Knife to pay the bills. Some mistakes they had made, they didn’t follow popularity, what the public wants, what is trending. Have you ever noticed, your grandfather always purchases the same pair of shoes? I think this is relatable. No new blood has been interjected into the creativity and the solid 40 years. The reason China is kicking. Our ass is because they produce new models, and a bunch of them at that. They know titanium cells because they follow trends. They are not relying on the same old pair of shoes just because they are comfortable. Bark River is their competitor and even though they have not made very many new blades, they are using new steel. They are mixing it up just a little bit by offering different models made with competitive steel. Sure rat and Ranger models will continue to be produced because they are the black and white label that pays the bills but they are also made overseas cheaply.
