when chem light sticks were a new thing back in the early 90s we used them to mark minefields when we ran out of smoke floats. minesweeper would mark the spot and then the trick was to "dont go there".
I have never seen a diference in brightness between the two but a 1 hour light would go dimmer much sooner then a 8-12 hour one obviously. And no you would not stand out with it for 12 hours.. But. if you only have a 30 minute chemlight and activated it when you heard an plane or somehting and it didnt see you and left then in 30 minutes your out a chemlight..where as if you activated an 8 hour one..and heard another plane or such 2 hours afterward you would still have the chemlight and not have
They don’t go out after 30 mins they last longer also the 5 minute stick is the one to get and works perfectly to buzzsaw. Since you need to actively do it for the craft to see you your argument is invalid and you can easily carry multiple sticks of the 12 hour variety as well.
How about brightness? Does a 30 minute chem light burn brighter than a 12 hour chem light? IF there is a significant difference in brightness, then you may want to carry the brighter 30 minute chem light as I think that it would be more likely to be seen. AND you aren't going to stand out there and swing your chem light for 8-12 hours either. You will activate it when you either hear or see something rather than just a random beacon. Right?
Small difference not worth it at all. Buy the 5 minute version, significantly brighter. I find them to actually last 10 mins then dim down a bit but still brighter than a regular orange glow stick for 2 hours. Also get the snaplights instead much better quality and price, brighter.
to activate another. and even if you did activate it and miss a signal..having a beacon of light all night long when you need rescue in the dark wilderness is in no way a bad idea.
this is one of the best ways I have ever seen to use a chem light. thank you

Randy J nope. In wide use all over by the 90s. 60s is when it was new.
