His father's cold justification? More like a weak excuse and they thought he would never see it until they started paying it back supposedly. I don't understand why the father is angry. He's the one that stole from his son. If anything he should be feeling regret. The fact he doesn't shows he would do it again. I think the OP needs to switch banks altogether.
Most likely it is because the father thought that the son would realize that they spent the money not on themselves and useless purchases, but on the education of his youngest daughter.
Why didn't they just do it for Dan?

Well it is from the point of view, and parents can be different, here they did very badly, so even got angry because OP did not understand them and asked to return the money and the case came to court
