This was too advanced for mass consumtion. This performance is art with a clear political message. Loreen is at another level.
Her choreography is representing famous historical photography and pictures and statues: 1. Mary with Jesus first one. 2. French revolution 3. A woman hitting nazi soldier with a purse.
Actually a woman hitting a skinhead/neo nazi back in the 80's. The song and the performance is however brilliant.

And I loved it and was so sad When it didnt qualify to the final 😞 so it was kind of too serious for my country Sweden to handle.... Honestly, I liked this more than Euphoria, and I adore Euphoria. I am in shock that it didn't make it.
Forever mad that Sweden didn’t choose this! Sweden never likes to take risks. I like this way more than Euphoria.

Trust me, a lot of Swedes were mad (including me) that she didn’t make it to the finals... Hated that Robin won Melodifestivalen. They voted for his looks as always in Sweden 😒 I voted 20 times for Loreen because her performance and song was amazing

It was basically a response to far right politics, it had Loreen in different stages of her life, old and young. The purse moment was pretty cool.

poertjt2 it was in 2017 right after Trump inauguration and far right parties were succeeding in Europe. Everyone was in fear of a new Holocaust. Building up for war in paradise,We don’t need no statements and we don’t need your way out sound pretty political.
She was also eliminated because of that. If she didnt use the purse lady in the performance I think it would have won against Anton Hagman in Andra Chansen and made it to the final. But since she made it too political she was eliminated, it was a stupid move from her imo

You're right about the message of the song and you are sort of right about the lady with the purse. She's based on a 1940s photograph of a elderly woman hitting a nazi when they were passing through Sweden. It's one of the most popular swedish pictures from that era. I guess it's also another reason this didn't reached the final. It was too dark and it's a bit hard to understand the lyrics itself.
Just a tiny detail, the picture of the woman with the handbag was from 1985. :)

If you look at the lyrics it is not too hard to understand the message, however yes I agree that it was a bit too serious for the Swedish people as we always need to send something lighthearted..

What the hell is happening with people today?how a pop crap (I can't go on)won this masterpiece? saying that it was political and dark its a hepocrisy...everything in world today is dark..what I can say is that 15 years old girls rule the world and decide which music will get popular..
yeah it was sad this song didn't even qualify for finals in Melodifestivalen. This song was pure art and her vocal range is crazy. I can't stand 2017 song "i can't go on" ughhh. From 2014 sweden are sending really cheap/generic songs...
The photo was taken in the 80s, in Växjö Sweden. The family of the woman on the picture didnt want Loreen to use that scene in her perfomance. They threatened to sue her actually. It was all over the news here in Sweden. I guess that could have played a role in why she didnt get more wotes.

Yes it's super avant-garde and almost too many ideas at some parts but the quality of the song itself and her amazing voice should have carried it through at least to the Final?!! This song lost to a generic Shawn Mendes copycat 😑😑😑

I was actually at the semi final in Skellefteå and got to see this live. The song, the performance and Loreen herself is truly amazing. I was very upset she didn't make it to the final.
@@lauragreen7577 I think they liked it a lot, it's Loreen after all. Hard to tell, though, since the TV crew are egging the audience on a lot. Some might have found it too serious and political. I thought it was amazing and it was so cool to see her live. Her stage presence and live singing voice is incredible.

Ok I am gonna try to be as clear as possible as to why this failed to reach the final. Swedish people in our dark nordic ''continent'' always strife for something light hearted and uplifting, especially when it comes to Melodifestivalen. (Euphoria was a bit dark yes, but it has that light too, whilst ''Statements'' was a very serious one all around) We also have an app where we vote for a song in that instant and Loreen's ''Statements'' was more of a grower then an immediate hit. So the app and the general feel of our people kinda screwed this act over unfortunately.
Interesting fact: This song almost qualified to the final and if the act would have, it probably would have won. This is because the app screws the people over and from a legitimate source the juries would have given Loreen top marks, which in conclusion would have given this song the win. So MF is a bit of a shitshow atm I would say.
I'm from sweden and THIS should have won, it would've gone far in eurovision...

Jake, if you decide to do a couple of MelFest ones from 2016, these 2 plus Wiktoria’s “Save Me” and Samir and Viktor’s “Bada Naka” are good reaction ones.
Also from 2017 you should react to is Mariette “A Million Years” (since you did “For You” recently) and JHF’s “En Värld Full Av Strider”. Both were also winner worthy entries.
It’s the biggest shame on our national competition ever. Trust me, that she did not make it was very controversial. But maybe because of it was not commercial or easy people did not vote. And it was also in a duel against an commercial and easy pop song and Sweden has a tendency to want to see stars fall. In 2008 one of our biggest stars, Carols, also fell in the competition, not because of the song which was a masterpiece but because of that people wanted to see her fail. Terrible. Horrible. And I am, was and never will standing back that decision. :)
Like some others has mentioned the song likely didn't win because of it's stong political message that was also a direct attack on the rising alt right (fascist) movement that unfortunately is pretty strong in Sweden like in many other countries right now.
It also caused some drama in the news when the handbag lady's son called the inclusion of her in the act disrespectful and unfortunately those things probably affected the votes.

I’m from Sweden. This is my favorite melodifestivalen song ever and I did everything I could to get it to Eurovision. My thoughts on why she didn’t qualified is that people thought it was to dark and didn’t understand Loreens concept with the song. I read an interview in a Swedish newspaper where she described every single move in that performance and there were actually a meaning behind everything. If you want to read that interview I will be happy to try and translate it to you, just answer my comment. Another factor that I think played a role in why she didn’t qualify is that the song she competed against in the second chance round was a song called “kiss you goodbye” by Anton Hagman. That song was very catchy and sung by a young and cute man that made all the girls fall in love, and maybe that was what the Swedes took to their hearts that night.

Personally i think this performance was too ”artsy” and metaphoric for the majority of Swedish people. It definitely lost because basic people didn’t understand it.

The worst stab in the back EVER in Swedish Melodifestivalen history. She was the winner. This song and performance had everything. It was too political and the swedes are cowards. Incredibly sad but true.
This is in no way my favourite song but I still wonder everyday how I Can't Go on won over this or En Varld Full Af Strider.

To be honest it's mostly moms and children that vote in Sweden. And maybee some older people so i think that loreen scared older people and children and the moms wanted something more upbeat. I needed 1-2 more listens before loving it.
there is also something, that makes you not want to vote the same artist several times because if feels like you are sending them only because they had won before. And you made a point about the Darkness, alot of people thought it was too dark.
In my opinion this should have represented sweden that year, much more interesting than "I can't go on"

I voted for her and i was so mad that she did not even make it to the final, at the time i felt like i never whanted to watch melodifestivalen again, I just can not belive she didnt make it.

Well when it comes to the swedish melodifestivalen most of the voters and also the jury groups are really young, which makes it hard for them to process the message. Unless your deeply into art and/or can relate, this song takes a few listenings to really grasp. Swedish kids learn english at a very young age, however to truly understand the lyrics and thus the message, it requires a deeper understanding which some people don't even achieve in the first language. Then it's not hard to imagine this applies also to a 2nd language on a elevated level.
I'm not surprised this fell out during Andra chansen(Second chance) even if it was my favorite entry that year. Swedish youth wants easy to process music... we don't have to like it but that's just how it is. This performance is a masterpiece, but it's dark and not really catchy which don't fly well with the younger televoters.
I think it was sabotage. Sweden didn’t want to win again, because it is expensive to host the contest. Russian eurofans ware really disappointed about it, cause we love Loreen

I keep hearing that argument but a country doesn't have to host if they win, they can if they want to and most countries will do it but you can refuse the offer if you don't want to host it, it happened multiple times in the past.
Millions of people vote in Sweden.. it's impossible to sabotage or manipulate their voting lol.
It was just too dark and dramatic to appeal to ordinary people. That easy :)

Great reaction as always! I liked this song by our Loreen and voted for it. I'd love it if you would react to my big favourite Helena Paparizou and her friend Nikos who were in the Swedish/Greek duo Antique and came 3rd for Greece with the song Die for you in 2001!! As you know she won for Greece in 2005. Antique were loved in Europe, especially by many Scandinavians and Greeks . It's a wonderful song and performance, you won't regret it!! 😽

Loreen in the national swedish semifinal ”Melodifestivalen” (Eurovision 2023).
She does not pronounce the words and the lyrics are not very clear. I still don't know what her message actually is, and the stage performance is aggressive while we don't necessarily understand why. Politics is one thing, and statements is one thing, but this was sort of confusing and we don't want to send something political that we don't even understand. And the song is pretty good but not something easy to get into, either. Vocals and performance is professional of course.
I wanted to like it, but couldn't kinda.
That year had a very close result for the top songs in the final, and the songs were all very professional. Maybe if she had gone through to the final she would've stuck out a bit more amongst the other top contenders or something, if she sold the song better. Instead she was beat in the duel in "Andra chansen" (The second chance) by a simple but easy-going pop song (Shawn Mendes xP).

My theory is that everybody was expecting another Euphoria. It’s a scandal that this song didn’t get to represent Sweden. It’s even better than Euphoria IMHO

Thank you for reacting to this! I'm so glad you did simply for the fact that Loreens new music like Statements deserves to be heard and put out there because as you said she puts real thought and effort in everything she does.
Fun fact: after her debut album "Heal" in 2012 her label didn't allow her to explore any different genres or sounds that swayed away too far from euphoria which led to her basically not releasing music at all and being a little forgotten.
After 5 (!!!) Years she finally split with the label. The final reason to seal this fate was very likely the failed ratings of statments in melodofestivalen.
But it was in a way a real blessing for Loreen, because she now is with a label that lets her be her own creative director which within not even half a year of their record deal things led to her releasing the electronic dance EP "Nude" and the trance/rock album "Ride". She's been sitting on so many ideas that she even teased that the next album with another new musical style might already be very close.
As for now, i would be really thankful if you reacted to RIDEs single and video trilogy (or even just one of them) consisting of

I adore Loreen, and Euphoria is one of my most favorite songs ever. And I *know* she was trying to say something deep and meaningful here....but I couldn't even make out all the lyrics, and the melody was....um, non-existent? Sorry....don't hate me, like I said, Loreen is amazing. Maybe I'm old....LOL!

European public didn't vote much for Sweden 2018. People expected that Margaret will win. If she would have won, Sweden would have got more points from whole European viewers. Because Margaret is popular girl in Europe.

And you will be again stunned and surprised how and why this masterpiece didn't win. At this point, 4 years ago, there were some serious clashes politically in Sweden - the political atmosphere was TENSE. So my explanation (as a Swede who voted for this song): 1. The message was too serious & dark & in some people’s faces - Melodifestivalen is a forum for more lighthearted performances than this that’re easy for people to understand. In its defense, there are MANY kids who watch it (a family show) & maybe that plays in. A kid wouldn’t be able to read the messages between the lines & understand the references. 2. The music was too edgy for Melodifestivalen too! MF has a tendency of producing pretty generic songs (with a few exceptions) & these do much better than songs who take risks.
Loreen is an absolutely creative artist and believes in her work. But a comeback to Eurovision after such a huge win in 2012, was really not needed. Taking risks is Ok (you should see her now.. FABULOUS haircut!) but the song is flat and serious. In her rehearsals, she used the 'finger' often.
