I'd love to see a full 30 minute tinkering with this kind of module, with ample waveshaping put into the feedback path. Reading the comments below, I'd love to hear what a phaseshifting filter / all pass would sound like. I bet there is some really funky ring mod type'ish sounds to be had. If those are "tameable" we could be hearing an entire new genre of synth music being invented right here (I'm talking "hard sync was invented" type of revolution) Maybe this in combination with some sophisticated FM type modules? Both as carrier as well as modulator? The mind boggles. This needs more audiovisual exposure!
Love this! Been making Karplus patches on various VSTis in the past, and I absolutely love the sound! Remember you can feed it anything, doesn't have to be noise.. even a vocal sample will do..
gotta get him on the sonic talk for modular and artists pivoting to instrument creators. deeply knowledgable fellow with real wit and grit. great interview!
yep- great, and very generous piece from Chris Randal- would also like to hear another interview with him talking more depth about audio damage gear/plug ins and ethos... :)
I've been doing this for years on my Waldorf Q and the Q User Manual has in-depth instructions and science behind Karplus Strong and the related Modifiers on Q to do so and imagine the Blofeld can do Karplus Strong as well.
lmao I'm a minute in and he explains PRECISELY what I would do with my Dads MXR Carbon Copy delay pedal. I had know idea that was also considered Karplus Strong!
I've been doing this with a circuit bent Barbie Karaoke delay for awhile now; I'm glad to finally learn the name for this synthesis technique. By the way, Synth DIYers, you probably already know but the PT2399 is a great(albeit nasty) delay IC.
but there is only one analog module, which is made to do exactly this. It sound amazing and is one of the most underrated modules around. It's the Delay1022 by CG Products.
Ah good point about the v/oct. I haven't really compared the sound, I guess the best thing to do would be pick one and give it a whirl! There is, or will be, the DSI tuned feedback module due soon, that might also be worth a look. Digital though.
Chris explains things in such a straightforward manner.
I learned something new today. This sounds great to experiment on. :)

I could definitely watch more of these, great vid thanks.
Brilliant reference and explanation :) thanks for sharing!
I like the way Chris Randall's brain works.
great education. Great sounding synthesis!!

What kind of vsts?
Been trying to do this, but mostly its way too convoluted
Straightforward and informative 👍
Really want to go deep into KS with my modular. I've been loving all of the attention it has been getting in Eurorack lately!
oh cool! i love their plugins!
The module is a whole synth altogether

yup, i would watch that twice.
very nice gentlemen this Chris Randall, the Mutable Rings does also this kind of sounds (I think one of the modes is based on Karplus Strong)
very interesting, thanks

Robert I Cool, can you share a patch for the Q?
Great, thanks!

I was doing this today to make a car motor sound effect by turning dry wet up and rate down, or vice versa. Nice to know it has a name
This was some of the very first stuff that I did with CSOUND waay back in the late 1980s. :)
What sort of filter is used? When I have used a standard Butterworth the phase shift causes problems with the delay.
this guy seems awesome

i wonder if the module lets you input an externally generated impulse? seems like the range of tones would be exponentially increased
Yes. You can use anything as the impulse. It has an impulse input. (You can actually use it as a plain ol' delay if you want.)
What kind of 'additive techniques' could you use to experiment with this? Mixing it with oscillators or something?
I would love to add this one to my rack.
What about software synths or effects doing this?
Wasn't the famous "ping" from Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" created with a similar technique?
synclavier with fm, i think
How does portamento sound with this synthesis technique?
Good question :D

+Igor Sabara
That CG Products one looks sweet indeed, but aren't the Doepfer and the Pittsburgh BBD modules also analogue?
sure, but not V/Oct and the CG just sounds so much more beautiful (and clean I guess).

4:00 sounds like fret buzz.
So it's audio rate delay.
Wow, a plucky little module!
instant Guqin!
1:09 with short de*LAY TIMES*
this guy sounds like Will Forte
Module looks lame but
