Karplus Strong Synthesis On Eurorack Modular

- This is the first part of our series on physical modeling synthesis on a eurorack modular. Karplus-Strong and wave guide synthesis use short delay lines with feedback to create sounds from simple plucked string modeling to two and three dimensional models of drum heads and resonating and reverberating spaces.
Some of the short delay modules we used to make this video:

Very nice to see such a thoughtful use of the matrix mixer in this! Appreciate the Doepfer love here too!
Well done explanation!
Great tips
The sound excitement is very noice
🤘🤘the matrix mixer
That’s some a spicy meatball. 👽Peace Christo
and one more, modelling metal objects with more than one dimension as mentioned in the video. This one was done with two delay lines with feedback between them. soundcloud.com/dave-bessell/analogue-modular-physical-models-metal-objects
So fun!
i think you need more filter modules
The best ever standalone KS module is ADM17 Proton by Audio Damage. If you can find one.
That was a great module!
Wow that's a lot of filter banks.

Adding a low pass in the feedback loop also messes up volt per octave tracking. However you can compensate for that by using further modules (attenuator or something like V scale) and get it to track in tune. Its a bit fiddly but you can usually get two to three octaves of accurate tracking for pitched playing. Here is a link to a more sophisticated extension of Karplus Strong (waveguide modelling) This one models a generic brass type instrument and is in tune. soundcloud.com/dave-bessell/brass-physical-model-test
Interesting... But doesn't 2hp Pluck so this in just 2hp?
Yes only u-He Diva 2hp was used
Rosetta Stoned i don't understand your comment... But there is a module from the company 2hp that is called pluck and is a karplus strong sound module that you can actually play in tune.
The 2HP Pluck is great for doing simple Karplus Strong, when you use individual modules though you have more control over how everything is routed and can make more complex sounds. Doing waveguide synthesis the way it is done in this video is not very practical, but it was done to illustrate how it works.
Defeats the entire purpose of learning how to do it yourself with individual modules.
Or you could just buy a used Rings. Way easier. 🤭
Not everyone can afford to just buy a module for every particular sound. And part of the fun of modular is learning how to patch these things for yourself.
