Fox Transfer Post Review

- Dropper posts are one of the best inventions created by mankind for mountain bike, but unfortunately lots of dropper post on the market just straight up stop working within a month or two.
In this video, Mike explains why we consider the Fox Transfer Post to be the best option for a majority or riders due to their feel, sound and insane reliability.

COMMENT UPDATE! This video is over 2 years old, and at this point, most of the lower priced dropper posts work very well. The OneUp Dropper V2 has been extremely reliable, and other options from brands like PNW Components are very reliable as well. The Fox Transfer Post still _feels_ the most high end, but the others work very, very well.
is there anyway to service this post like the Oneups etc?
Nevermind, you answered. I had issues after a muddy ride and had to send it back
Comments FAQ:
Is the OneUp dropper post better than the Transfer Post?: The OneUp Dropper V1 has consistent issues, and we warrantied about 50% of the ones we sold. We actually stopped selling them due to so many issues. The V2 model seems to have fixed those options, but still OneUp recommends everyone to take them apart to add air pressure before installing it. Yes, its cheaper, but also feels cheaper and requires a little elbow grease every once in a while. The PNW Rainier also seems to require frequent collar greasing and air pressure maintenance to keep it running smooth.
Is the Bike Yoke Revive better than the Transfer post?: The Bike Yoke Revive is an awesome seatpost and we highly recommend it. However, we've found they need more frequent maintenance to keep them running smooth. The two best droppers are the Transfer Post and Revive, however the Transfer Post took the cake since we barely ever see them require any maintenance.
The Lost Co. Where is a good video on repair an overhaul of the fox transfer? Thank you
Good video man
@The Lost Co. So I've actually been having some issues with my transfer post. It's the performance elite version. What happens is that it sometimes stop about an inch from the top. This could happen even when it was "new" (it came with a complete bike). I first thought it was due to cable tension but after trying to optimize that I've kept noticung the same thing now and then. It seems very weak at the top so if I touch it ever so slightly during the last 1/5 of its way up it stops. Most importantly it won't continue up from there if I press the lever again. I switched to a Wolf Tooth Remote (LA) but I've kept having the same problem (love the lever though). I've tried using WPL fork lube on the stanchion but without effect.
V2 is TRASH, lasted 6 weeks and started creeping up on me when down. Sent back for warranty and got the Factory Transfer, should have gone this route in the first place
@@nathandanner557 that sounds like cable a tension issue to me...
"Some dropper posts" = Rockshox reverb
At what point are we going to see suspension lockouts attached so when droppers top out, suspension locks out. And open the suspension when fully dropped? I can't be the only person who wants this.
@DawnWeRide I think Bmc does just that.
One company did this, but they went out of business
I did that
Mtb suspension is so good already these days though. I thought having lock outs would be super important but I literally never lockout my fork or shock these days and it still pedals perfectly uphill. And my bike is horst link so if anything dw or vpp should be even slightly better with pedaling efficiency.
@@dylan-5287 lockout helps when or if you need to stand up for something like an all out sprint, up hill effort or racing.. I know I use it often to keep my fork and rear shock from bobbing when applying max effort (spark 910 2021).
I switched after my KS Lev died two years ago, and haven't had a single problem since. It's an incredibly solid design. As you noted, the lever was awful, so I switched to the Wolftooth extended, and it's awesome too. Great review.
seriously this channel needs to blow up. He is so much more likable than most of the biggest names in MTB youtube land. Come to Durango some time!!
I have the RockShoks Reverb for 4 years now without a single issue. it was never serviced and works great. Before that, I had the KS Eten which also worked perfectly.
I found that pro #3 is quite ridiculous... I think that the lockout noise is a result of how hard your rebound adjustment is so if the rebound is set to be fast, the noise will be louder, and also you can feel the lockout.
Had mine for longer without a hint of issue.
Alwasy Kashima to for me.
I have my 3 Fox Transfers, my oldest one being almost 3 years old. They are just awesome posts, no problems at all, and works as good now as it did when it was brand new.
I have to pay Kashima premium on all my Fox "Suspension stuff", because I get itchy and develop a rash if my Fork, Shock, and Post does not have Kashima coating on it :-(
I like your style.
Is that contagious?...cuz it definitely makes me feel the same way....to be honest i was hoping fox would make a wireless one like reverb..so to keep all gold (kashmina, xx1 gold axs)
I have the transfer performance, works great so far! It's my first dropper post ever and i'm glad I don't even need to do anything with it
I had a reverb and rebuilt it, 4 moths later it started screwing up. Then it got slow in cold temp. I got the fox and wolftooth. By far better, no comparison.
Is it still going strong? My Fox transfer got sticky after 6 month. Needs a full service, probably just to lube the top bushing! I do my reverbs myself already for years and no problem!
I've been running the transfer factory for about a year now, no stanchion lube or a single service, still runs great! Love it!
There are a few points worth mentioning about these posts: 1) the operating pressure changed between 2017 and 2018+ models from 400psi to 300psi, respectively. As you may know, lower operating pressure generally yields smoother action (given like-for-like speed). This factoid was expressed to me by some technician that took in my 2017 model for service...
2) These systems are Nitrogen-charged because such gas maintains the same pressure between a temperature range (forgot the exact low & high ends). You can already deduce the benefit of the temperature tolerance. What sucks is the expertise needed, or necessity for proper equipment to nitrogen-charge them when servicing.
How about the Oneup Dropper? Also really reliable and you can adjust it's travel.
We’ve had a OneUp V1 on one of our test bikes for a year and it’s done ok. We had to sand the white inner shim otherwise it wouldn’t return all the way after a while of riding. I assume they addressed that with V2
Love my oneup v2. They did fix the adjustability. They completely changed the way it's done. It's now metal rods that go into a drilled hole under the neck.
Wife has the One Up on her bike and once a year I check the air pressure and do regular cleaning and its been awesome. I'm getting the V2
V2 is TRASH, lasted 6 weeks and started creeping up on me when down. Sent back for warranty and got the Factory Transfer, should have gone this route in the first place
@@mtxbraking I'm starting to have that issue with my v1, how much do you sand?
Mine is still going strong. First dropper I used came with my Kona 134 back in 2014 that was revolutionary to me but not sure what brand it was. For some reason a year later I felt the need to get a reverb, what a POS that broke all the time, but I'm sure I'm the only one that had a broken reverb. Current transfer going strong with my wolf tooth lever.
270.5mm max insertion on the 175mm dropper vs 267mm max insertion on OneUp V2 180mm. OneUp is apparently the shortest max insertion right now, so not bad at all. Would love to see a review of the OneUp V2.
How many times you’ve said “fox transfer dropper post”? 😂 I just started laughing my ass off! Really good review! I just bought mine and next week I’ll put it to the test.
The rockshox hydraulic lever is hands the nicest lever I have used, the post, not so much.
I swapped it out for a Oneup version 1 with a wolf tooth lever. The lever feel blows compared to the RS, but it works.
The Oneup post is ok so far, it's on the spare bike so it doesn't get much use.
Currently using a bikeyoke 185 (i think) and really liking it, especially the bleed off value they use. Only had it for a 1 riding summer so we'll see how it goes.
Hey Mike!
Awesome review dude! How does it perform in the cold weather? We have a lot of issues with bikes here in the northeast in the winter with droppers now functioning.
Thanks!
I've used mine down to 40F without any problems whatsoever.
living in canada, use it on winter ride. no slow no stuck no frozen. but my rockshox reverb was not that "lucky"
The new shimano lever is amazing so if you use new shimano get it
Kashima post
I’ve had the Factory Kashima post less than 8 months. It quit working (not cable related) and my shop said it’s been common recently. He sent it to fox for a warranty repair. Fox said it was just normal wear and refused to honor the warranty. I’m 70 years old, probably average 2 not so tough rides a week and take good care of my bike. My bike shop paid for the service and I’ll help them out by ordering a new, different, post.
Any chance you could make a video on how to service the Fox transfer post?
Fox has actually updated the remote lever, I think they designed it with raceface!
Antti Haring they’re definitely working closely with raceface. The Raceface Turbine R is just a non-kashima transfer with different logos
Doesn’t fox own raceface?
Ethan Cushing yes, they do.
Fox owns RaceFace, so the RaceFace Turbine R dropper post and lever are manufactured by Fox. Both seatposts are the exact same besides the logo on the outside.
@@TheLostCo its like the marzocci seatpost, the same thing with different logo jahskajakas
I've heard great things about the Fox post, and I'll consider one when my current one gives up the ghost. I'm gonna be the black sheep here and say that the Reverb I currently have has been going strong without any bleeding or service since I got the bike last May. It's been cold here in PA lately as well!
I hate to disagree with you Mike but the OneUp dropper is undeniably the best dropper post on the market. Its inexpensive, lightweight, very high quality, has adjustable travel/rebound speed and is the most reliable dropper post EVER.
Appreciate the comment! However, the OneUp V1 dropper post has been the product we've consistently warrantied the most. We'll be reviewing the V2 soon, and hope it works a lot better than the V1!
@@TheLostCo I stand corrected...my post has been amazing.
I have this post, and i don't like it. As short person (165cm) it has to much stack. Also the where you clamp the saddle its not on an angle like other posts, its almost straight. And if you have a angle seat tube(trek slash) it adds even more stack. It also has play from left to right. For 125mm it has 405mm. The oneup components 120mm has 350mm.
And what is with the new Reverbe and i make All Services my selve
Been on my PNW for over a year not one complaint and zero issues.
Could y'all do a video on servicing one of them
I personally prefer the pnw bachelor- I like the larger post diameter and the 200mm drop since I’m 6’3
You tshirt and logo looks like a monochromatic startrek Starfleet uniform 😁
Hey good video!
Does your fox have rotational play? I have a 2020 fox Transfer performance and it came with noticeable play out of the box... What do you think ride on or sent it back for warranty?
I have had two transfer posts and found them ridiculously sensitive to seatpost clamp tension. I have never seen that with oneup, rockshox reverb, or pnw seatposts. Anyone else?
Well, turns out it's not really the best ;)
All dropper posts are sensitive to seatpost clamp tension, and it's very weird to hear you've seen an issue. We install all sorts of dropper posts in the shop and have never seen any specific sensitivity with the Transfer Posts. Are you using a torque wrench?
@@TheLostCo not all are equally sensitive- some have a bit thicker tube than others, making them less susceptible to lockup.
Loop
i have a fox transfer non kashima that came with my bike and the return speed is SO SLOOOOWWWWW....I took the whole bike back to the bike shop to show the manager there and he tells me "it's supposed to be that way" as if I don't own 3 other droppers of various different brands that don't do this....
Hate when I’m unsure of my post being fully extended, or not
I've been riding bikes since 1950 and have to say ,the dropper seat post ranks up there as one of the most innovative and useful components in the history of cycling along with the rear derailleur , rim brakes ( disc brakes suck) , front suspension and e bike motors for old damaged bodies . 😂
i'm constantly using my dropper as i go up and down hills and even micro adjusting on flat roads , dirt and asphalt . i love it .
When Will they be back in stock?
BEST? That's highly subjective. I have a Transfer, I also own a KS Lev, both posts have been awesome for me, with the advantage going to the KS Lev because I can service it at home, something you can't say for the Transfer, at least not without special tools and lots of hassle. I find a post that's reliable and can be maintained at home without having to send it out for weeks to be serviced much more deserving of the title "best", even then still subjective.
Not being able to service the Transfer at home isn't a big deal because it needs no consistent maintenance to keep it working. The KS LEV allows you to do a sleeve service and cartridge replacement at home, which is nice because it requires maintenance to keep it working. We all decided that we would rather have a post with no issues that can go 2-3 years without a service instead of being able to service the post ourselves and take it apart every couple months to keep it working.
I keep thinking about trying one of these but I love my bike yoke revive
Not a fan. Got it because it was there and it was Fox, but the stock Bontrager dropper post was better. I've had quite a few issues with it after only 3 rides.
The Transfer might be relieable, but thats it. There are plenty relieable posts on the market and the fox one feels clunky while also managing to be one of the most expensive ones.
If you have that ammount of money to spend on a seatpost, the bikejoke revive is much nicer and can be bleed within 10 seconds.
Have you ever actually used a Fox Transfer? It's the nicest feeling for sure. The sound, the construction, and reliability is amazing.
The Bike Yoke Revive is also great, but requires a bit more maintenance to keep it running smooth.
My Oneup v1 was running good for 16months , til I crashed. Got another Oneup
Oddest thing. I stumbled across this great review of the Fox Transfer Post while trying to find a video of how to get my Fox Transfer Post to work. It's simply the worst dropper I've ever had. Slow to extend then gets stuck an inch or two from fully extended every single time. Tried cleaning, greasing, adjusting the seat post clamp every sort of which way. Even tried it without a seat post clamp just to see if it would pop up satisfactorily. Nope. How can such a high cost, high end product that looks so good work so poorly? I see several videos with owners reporting the same issues.
Hey Conrad! Sorry you're having problems with you post, sounds like it just needs a service and it should be good as new again! We can rebuild it here at The Lost Co or you can send it in to Fox, give us a call and we can help you figure something out! -Tor
I have two transfers I would be happy to give to someone if you are in San Diego. Replaced all of them with Yoke’s. I can self service the Yoke’s and has been awesome.
Pieter Dorrestein I’ll take one! How much?
@@ognyc6522 what diameter do you need and r u in San Diego? If you promise me you will use it happy to give it to you. If so send me an email. I am not hard to find online.
I haven’t heard of any issues with BrandX posts from chain reaction. 300+ for a dropper? Give me a break
The brandx posts go up a lot slower than the transfer (at least last time I used one). They are definitely pretty reliable though.
Couldn't agree more, had mine for one year, rain and mud and the commuting I do to work on my Enduro still working smoothly, do need to grease it under the collar sometimes but that's all the maintenance I've been doing
Bike yolk revive. Awesome post👍
Is there anyway on these posts to set a maximum height? I have the 125 and once it's fully extended I need to drop it back down a smidge. I love the product btw. thanks
Waiting for Transfer 200-220mm. At 6'3" my 175mm Reverb is still not slammed in either my 2020 Nomad or 2021 Hightower.
I have this dropper and is awesome.
I have a lot of droppers and I like the fox the best as well. My pnw is great too but I can’t hear when it’s at the top
My transfer didn’t last as long as it should have. Switched to Bike Yoke and great so far.
Don’t agree with the comment about bragging to your friends about servicing your equipment. I see it as a negative that I would need to send my equipment away to be serviced, longer time out of action, more cost and inconvenience by a long shot.
On the flip side - a lot of people probably wouldn’t really have a clue either so there is an element there to consider where lace of serviceability is a pro.
The fox performance elite vs the new rockshox reverb, which one would you recommend? Actually looking for post 31.6 150mm
Has a KS Lev, it was junk, and so was customer support, love my Fox Transfer post.
Actually a little out of theme but...Is there anything I can do if after almost half a year of use a bike does eventually feel to big by frame ? But actually not wanting to buy a new one...? How can I meet that problem ?
Hey Mike, i CANT get the top collar off even with a decent sized strap wrench to clean out and regrease
My top choice is still the X-Fusion manic
If you ever compared the x-fusion to others you will find out that x-fusion is a pile of junk. I've tried out RockShox Fox x-fusion Race Face and the x-fusion was the worst
Hey Mike, just got a new bike and it has a 150mm transfer, I'm a tall enough dude and want to get the biggest drop possible on my dropper. Do you know is there any way of changing the travel by changing some internals like with suspension forks or is it just a fixed drop on them. Thanks
how about durability, which coating is more scratch resistant?
Do you think the transfer would fit a 10x7 seat rail?
Just ordered yesterday .
KASHIMA BOYZZZZ
I wish I could run a fox transfer but the seat tube on the giant reign is so short which makes insertion length key.. I'm running a ks Lev as a result but I hate it lol
Is the difference really only in the finish?
These are expensive but well worth it if you use regularly.
How does this compare to Thomson's dropper post?
Yoke dropper is the best dropper!
They're awesome! However, we've seen them require maintenance more often and cost a couple bucks more.
How about play in the shaft? Most droppers rotate side to side slightly and it drives me nuts
Fox has that play, way more than my Bikeyoke
15 hours of use and it doesn't stay up, very frustrating.. have to send to a shop to service it..
Hi. great review. Do you know if one can change the post from 30.9 mm to a 31.6 mm later (like buying just that part). I ask because it is not cheep and if I change my bike I will want to take the dropper post with me.
You can just buy a shim to fit a larger diameter
My Transfer post creeps down whilst riding, and doesn’t always go all the way to the top (this part seems to be improving).
I sent mine back for warranty service for not returning to the top they fixed it up for me but now I have other issues. Maybe I got a lemon but so far fox transfer is the most garbage post I have ever owned.
Good stuff! Just bought a Surly Ice Cream Truck (info on my channel) and one of the reasons why is because it is dropper seat post ready. I will be looking at this one for sure!
ElevationEveryWeekend checked out the channel, good start going there
Is the Marzocchi Transfer dropper the same as the Fox Transfer? If so it sounds like an even better option than the Fox due to the lower price...
Correct! However, pricing is the exact same.
Love the fox transfer. Way better then the hydraulic rock shox and no name posts.
I have a x fusion manic and it is great and brutal
I can’t seem to find any fox dropper post 34.9
Super Video
Question: can you install the FOX TRANSFER POST on a frame without internal cable routing?
Yes, they make it like that too.
Thanks I'll keep looking for it i want the Gold finish it keeps within my color scheme Happy 2020
@@bromossunstarranger8706 Yep! You can order an external collar routed Transfer Post in either Performance or Factory Kashima coating from us @ thelostco.com/pages/fox-transfer-dropper-post
Fox Transfer better than BikeYoke?
Nope
They're both great, but we've seen the BikeYoke require more frequent maintenance.
I like the transfer, have on my hardtail, but not enough drop for my big bike. Have a 200mm fall line and the amount of extra travel is pretty awesome, the reliability (or there lackof) is not
fox transfer on my yt jeffsy 2018 cf always gets stuck at that 3/4 point, and yes it's super annoying. wondering if this is a simple maintenance issue? any suggestions?
Hey Mike, any idea why my Fox Transfer have a tendency to stick with a inch or two left if I let it up slowly or if I'm in the way and then try to get it up the last bit. I have checked the torque and it's in the lower part of the given spectrum.
Mine doesn't do that, it always goes up all the way even if I do it very slowly by barely pushing the lever. However, a lot of other posts I have used (including the bikeyoke) do have similar sticking issues when going up very slowly. You might want to send your post in to get looked at.
Is this the 2020 model?
249$? For real, here in Mexico they cost 445 for the fox performance
Can someone please clear something up for me , do they move freely up and down like a hydraulic or is it purely manual adjustment?
You manually adjust the height of the post with a lever usually mounted by the front brake lever.
Do they make a 27.2?
Does anybody know if you can use a cheaper cable and remote for the Fox Transfer? I ordered one without the cable and remote so I wanted to see if I could save some money. Thank you.
Because it’s Fox ...one up dropper ftw, cheap and reliable.
does fox have a 34.9 yet?
Hey guys, does anyone know if the ethirteen dropper post lever would work with the fox transfer post? I really like my ethirteen lever and would rather use that than buy a whole new lever for the fox transfer.
What should I do? My fox transfer is a bit too slow.
Joonas Purtola add air, lube up the inner post.
Being a shorter rider I'm looking for a dropper with the shortest insertion so it's completely slammed when compressed in my 2016 Transition Patrol. Any help would be appreciated thanks.
Bike yoke is the shortest and most expensive.
CON: Need to hit the perfect amount of torque when setting it in the frame (4-5nm depending on frame)... if just a bit too tight it will stick, if a bit too loose, the seat can wiggle slightly
Jakob Engell the seat is supposed to wiggle slightly, that is part of the internal mechanism, please follow the torque rating correctly 😂
Please torque to proper spec. This applies to any frame and any dropper post!
Do they have a option for bikes who dont have internal cabeling?
Yep! You can order an external collar routed Transfer Post in either Performance or Factory Kashima coating from us @ thelostco.com/pages/fox-transfer-dropper-post
How about Raceface Turbine R ? is made in collaboration with fox. Works very good for me
el G identical to a performance series transfer
el G it’s a rebrand fox
KS Lev Integra has a loud top out sound
Agreed
I've had alot of trouble with my external fox dropper...does not extend fully.!
Maybe the collar around the post is too tight?
I adjusted the collar ...post needs service and needs recharge.
Bike yoke dropper?
I got a lemon call transfer from fox
Mine died after 2 rides :))))) lost all air and had to be sent back to warranty in April and still waiting for it ....
My thing with droppers is simple. ... NOT A REVERB IF IT DOESNT SAY REVERB ON IT THEN IT IS A QUALITY POST
