  • Hi friends! In today’s video I’m chatting about something that I’ve been experiencing for many years, insulin resistance in the morning, and how I personally deal with it. I hope some of these tips will be helpful for you! Please remember that there is nothing wrong with needing more insulin at certain times of the day, and never compare your insulin doses to other people with diabetes. We are all so unique and different! Sending you love!

wow, thank you so much for this! I recently had the realization that I'm insulin resistant in the mornings and that I simply need to give myself more insulin. At first, this made me feel like I was doing something wrong, but then I realized that a pancreas that works gives out how much insulin is needed and I can do that as well.. it doesn't reflect poorly on me for any reason. Anyway, this video was a good affirmation of that!

Hi, I'm also type 1 insulin pumper
And about 1 1/2 years ago I started exercising about 5 mins of HIIT and 5 mins of pilates in the morning before eating and I too see a difference in the post breakfast spikes. Hang in there everyone, diabetes is manageable and it keeps us extra healthy 😊 thx for the videos

I’m on injections by choice because I get way better control this way than with a pump and it’s better for a ultra low carb diet imo. I have found that if I get up and give basal at 6 am, 8 hours after my nighttime basal it keeps me completely level. 12 hour dosing is not effective for me. My day basal is almost twice my night basal. Before this I would have to give 2 units of Bolus as soon as I woke up and that was just inconvenient and not as consistent for stability. It’s all about dialing in the proper basal and timing is very important. (For me)

It’s great that you go into so much detail about the the nitty gritty details of actual blood sugar control. I too often use exercise in the morning to minimize my sugar spike and that seems to work well. Of course there are other times of the day when it doesn’t seem to work as well but that’s diabetes!

I totally agree with the our bodies working differently at different times, even as a T2 Diabetic. I would say not just on the daily, but also during the week, the month, even the year (if you want to think past insulin resistant moments). I noticed within the last few months, I am more insulin resistant when I am on or around the time of my "time of the month." I did let my endocrinologist know about this. She told me to let her know if it happens to give her a call and we could adjust the dosage of my insulin. Doctors are so helpful. I am grateful for my endocrinologist. All types of diabetes are complicated. But at the end of the day, I am greater than my highs and lows.

I have been type 1 for 35 years. I must inject 5-6 units of regular as soon as my feet hit the floor even if I my glucose is 60. I only eat once a day (strict carnivore) in the late afternoon/evening. Never felt better. Eating just makes me feel like hammered dog crap and requires too much insulin. The problem with taking a lot of insulin is the weight gain it causes. If your insulin levels are too high, it is physiologically impossible to lose weight. I have a type 1 diabetic doctor who is pleased with his ALC of 7, but mine is 6 or just under and I have no complications :D

Thanks again for another great video. I agree with your approach - it works well. Another thing that works (at least for me) is to increase my basal rate slightly from 3:00 a.m. to counteract the "dawn effect". This effect has something to do a natural increase in some hormones to help the body prepare for action at the start of the day. I increase my overnight basal rate from 0.4 units to 0.45 units from 3:00 a.m. till 7:00 a.m. At 7:00 a.m. I revert to my normal morning basal rate. Hope this helps.

T1D for 5 years A1c 5.9. I had the same problem...I reduced my saturated fat as much as possible and keep my total fat under 15% of calories. Insulin sensitivity has SKYROCKETED. In my case insulin resistance is primarily caused by saturated fat/high fat and excessive calories. I eat 70% carbs 20% protein 10% fat. Boluses are super predictable and everything is so easy! I eat many small carb meals throughout the day and LOTS of fruit.

Great advice as I just started following you! I’m a fellow Canadian from Montreal and newly diagnosed as T1D in 2018 at 56 years old. Iam now using the Lifestyle Libre sensor and love it….game changer. I have a wonderful endocrinologist. I’m getting more used to my insulin injections and follow my dr’s advice as well as eat healthy and exercise regularly. I look forward to watching your videos and have already learnt many great tips❤️

Great topic that is worth having talk about. My consultant said it's a fenomena that in mornings sugar gets higher even if we wouldn't eat anything with carbohydrates so it's quite normal. I choose to eat little to no carbohydrates in my breakfast as to not make blood sugars any higher. Thanks for sharing.

Such a great video, and thank you for the underlying message of not feeling ashamed of being insulin resistant - I think when dealing with high blood sugars, this is such an easy thing to do, and so thank you for this. I recently went onto a pump because I'm so insulin resistant in the morning! Hope you're doing well in these crazy times :)

Yeah I need prebolus at least 30min if I don't wana spike. And use double insulin. I try eating more slow acting carbs and the less sugar possible for breakfast, that seems to help me too.

i always get so excited when your video's come out, cause they always help me. my body uses alot of insulin, and its super resistant the morning and near 2pm, i do try my best. The problem is that i do needle with pens, but its stings super bad, like to the point where the pain you have to like jump a little are rub it, and more. Ive tried numbing creame, yetnothing works. We are saving u somemoney to get an insulin pump, ilive in canada, but we still need to save up, luckly its not super expencive(ish) but i am grateful that i have the ability to not have to worry if i have enoughmoney to payformy insulina nd test strips. I am very lucky, and you make me belivein a better system! thanks,

I'm very insulin resistant in the morning too: at lunch and dinner I usually need 1u of insulin for 10gr of carbs, while at breakfast I need 1u for 5gr! I also noticed that, even prebolusing 15 mins before breakfast as I used to do, I sometimes tended to have a spike and then an hypo, so my diabetologist advised me to extend the prebolusing to 30 mins and now it goes better. Also trying to eat more complex carbs than sugars really helps me to maintain my blood glucose level more stable.

Whatup? Man just lately I have had the same insulin resistance in the morning but I am getting older too but not sure if that has anything to do with it but everything you said makes perfect sense. At 1st I thought it was my Eversense CGM but that thing is always spot on 24 hours A-day and that wasn't it it truly was my morning insulin resistance and I just take a little bit more than I usually do the rest the day never get perfectly right but learning every day thanks so much for the video all the best to you too :)

Hi, I agree with you about drinking and exercising in the morning. I have diabetes type 1 since 30 years and I chose to be a semi Pro athlete in running competition. I would like to add on top of the important things you said that sometimes insulin resistance means a slower effect. It means (in my case) that Humalog for example takes not 30 minutes but 1 hour and half to show some effect so basically all get deviated of an hour but the overall effect is the same. My suggestion is to check the insulin effect in such a period to be sure if there is no effect or a delayed one. Indeed adding insulin without this data might lead to severe Hypo. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much Rebecca💞! I really appreciate it. I totally get your concern about diabetes-related complications. I am also concerned about developing them in the future (and was actually just screened for retinopathy today, which will be in my next vlog). I feel that as people living with diabetes, we just have to do our best to take care of ourselves, and be aware of the complications in order to catch them early. There is no point living our lives worrying about something that may happen. So far, after 18 years of T1D, I have no complications and I'm hoping it stays that way ☺️

Woww... thanks! That's exactly what happens to me too. And using a CGM really helped me to increase minut by minut my pre-bolus time, specially on breakfast. Normally, I wake up with 85 blood sugar then with 20 minuts pre-bolus is enough. If it's over 120 I extend that time some minuts more. Like this, those ugly spikes becomes smoother and rounded. That's what works for me. But, far from recommend it, that is super personal, as you said and must be done very slowly and with a medical supervision.

Since I switched to Fiasp, I almost never need to prebolus anymore! I works SO fast! I actually use extended bolus to delay the release as I eat my meal. It has helped so much in preventing spikes and lows.

Aww I totally get this!! From my experience, the best way to avoid lows when working out is to have as little "insulin on board" (i.e. not exercising after meals, or decreasing basal rate before exercise if you are on a pump), but even when doing that we can still go low. If you do go low, there is no shame at all in having carbs to treat it! When I used to go to ballet classes at the studio, I would need juice almost every class since it was so vigorous! It's what your body needs and doesn't ruin your workout at all :) !

I have this issue too. For me I have found the the type of exercise has a real bearing on the bg impact and if I pick the right exercise and intensity I can now actually ward off a hypo without carbs (sometimes!). I base what I do on this useful video, although the parameters they suggest certainly don't work for me! abcd.care/resource/exercise-strategies

Whatever I eat in the morning it constantly goes up guess I'm resistant too. I ate around 7AM went gave 6 units of insulin (carb counted) went to school and my BS went to 10 so I cut class and went for a run. Guess it got my insulin going since my BS dropped to 5, but as soon as I sat down it went back up to 11.

Large doses are not good - will cause weight gain and contribute to BPH. T1D's should try to maintain BS with as little insulin as possible. Diet - regular exercise and perhaps metformin is the best way.
