How Farms Work is a UA-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. Our videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and GMO crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Be sure to subscribe for new videos every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
I built and tore down bins for two summers while in high school. We used jacks with a hand winch, but like you said, once you get a rhythm, they go right up. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, can’t wait to see the rest!
I got to help put up a small one a couple years ago. Had never done anything like that before so it was quite an experience having lived in a big city my whole life. Had the old hand jacks to lift it up. I really enjoyed the work and see how it was done. Have driven past it several times and always smile and remember that I got to help put it up and got paid for for it.
Enjoyed the video ... most folks have no idea what it takes to be farmer .... they are the heart and soul of America and the world ... all the best!
Wow, I expected the bin to be a bit taller, but after seeing the part where you explained how the Jack's will lift it so you can add more extensions I now understand how these are built. Thank you For the education.
I wish everything goes well about your new bin construction.
Looking forward to the build grew up in the country and never saw it done. Helped fill the bin and empty and the fill and shell out corn crib then I followed a different path wish I stayed in farming.
Hey Ryan thanks for all the videos that you have shared.
Enjoyed it. It has been several years since I have helped build a grain bin. The newer hydraulic jacks look awesome!
Tractor time with tim u should come up to Wisconsin and your wife and meet ryans family then go to Wyoming and visit guy in wy again
Maybe they have a job for Johnny to do?
We met Ryan at the Farm Progress Show 2017. However, I doubt he remembers :-)
I'm afraid Johnny would be a bit intimidated by Ryan's equipment :-)
Tractor Time with Tim
ROFL!
I think it's safe to say a whole lot of people have been waiting for this video. I'm genuinely surprised it stayed dry enough within the last two weeks for you to get it going. That gigantic Sukup decal looks like it needs a HFW logo emblazoned on it somewhere in the corner, just to personalize the bin a bit more than it already is. Nice to see the Dewalt in action, by the way. Thanks for the video.
Matthew Hoag I agree! he needs a HFW logo there.
Awesome idea, they must do it now
@@jankotze1959 too late the bin is probably already up. A good idea though!
Ladders, paint, stencils, and time would be the only requirements. Time, of course, is the rate limiting factor.
Matthew Hoag I am not sure about putting a. HFW logo up there. I mean it does say Suck Up already. I know that isn’t how it’s pronounced, but Suck Up is what popped will read!
We wish a healthy, peaciful and happy new year for you . Best Regards AYKUT COSKUN .
Ryan it hasn't changed a lot since I did that for Farm service in Marshalltown Iowa back in the later 60 an 70s .We didn't have cordless drills or hydraulic jacks it was done by hand and electric drills . Enjoy your videos
Cool timelapse with the clouds.
I remember helping do this as a teen back when I was growing up on the farm. Those battery powered drivers sure the heck beat socket wrenches. Jacks are a lot different as well. We had external A frames and manual winches. A lot has changed in (cough cough) years.
I'm not a farmer but God bless our framers across this great nation🇺🇸. Thanks for sharing the details of the build I'm a truck driver so from the family farms to the stores God bless you 🇺🇸
Beautiful scenery and aerial shots!
LOUD inside, glad to see ear protection!
Thanks for sharing Ryan..
Its great how easy jobs go when you have good equipment and tools. Great video Ryan.
The inside of the bin will never look that clean again. Lol
I enjoy watching the videos keep up the great work.
Nice workmanship!
Investing in expansion and improvements!! Good thing to see, hope your operation is doing well. Best wishes from the southeast part of the state.
😄
It looks like fun to build a bin
Edward Schwenk oh dear god
Thank you Ryan. Hang in there Dwight, you and I are built about the same way, but I know you are tougher than me. I could see your shirt getting soaked. Must been an oven in there w the roof on. Looks awesome folks.
They don't call it sweat equity for nothing.
My old man and I built two 4500 bushel grain bins about 8 years ago by ourselves, we had old crank jacks to lift the bin up so we could install the next ring.
you got the greatest music for grain bin,,,hay and the world is still watching,,,,lol
Those are the only bins I run great bins and a great company
Nice grain bin , good company that makes it too
Another A+ video by HFW. Keep up the great work.
I always wondered how they did those! Looking forward to seeing the jacks used, neat idea!
And the time lapse was excellent too. My brain had a time lapse as I watched this in 3 phases today, lol
Great drone shots. Thank you for sharing.
Again thanks for showing us how this works! Very informative! Love watching how things are built! Hope to build one some day when I grow enough
InstaBlaster
Fascinating. Haven’t seen anything like this. Thanks!
Seeing "Made in the USA" on the metal inside the grain bin is something I like to see. 💪🇺🇸
Id put money on it its not made in usa steel though... made in doesnt mean what it should anymore.
OETIOHeavyLifter you are wrong actually. I work for a steel processing company and we cold roll and form the steel for Sukup. Sukup is one of our biggest customers and we make the steel in Delta Ohio. Comes in on trucks in coils. We then send it through a process to get an acid bath, then it’s sent through a galvanizing line to get coated then through a slit line to get cut to length and size.
so you get it on a truck... you dont make the steel... at least thats what you just posted lol likely came off a ship and is reworked and then its considered made in america.
@@rollinlowford considering he is surrounded by areas that are known for steel I doubt it came in on boat. Mostly likely from Pittsburgh, Chicago, indiana, or one of the many steel mills that are on the Ohio from where I'm from

Marketers and manufacturers that promote their products as Made in USA must meet the “all or virtually all” standard. This publication offers practical guidance on Made in USA claims.
That is a quote from the FTC website so if it has that sicker it has to be able to back it up
I made the side walls of the bin in Sheffield awesome to see my work looking so good in your video. I hope you love the new bin.
Ryan, at the 4 minute mark as you were tightening a nut one just below it was spinning from the vibration. Not how sure how critical it is that all are tightened but.......Love the vids showing how farms work.......
Great progress for day 1! Glad to see the ear plugs, inside working has got to be deafening..
I`m going to need you to check all those bolts one more time, lol!!
I remember when we put up our bin, my dad gave my brother and I wrenches and we would be inside the bin with earmuffs. We would just go around and around. I think we were about 11 and 12 years old at the time. I just remember it was loud and hot!
Wow!!! That went fast!!! Hydraulic jacks, must be nice!!! When I helped put up a bin, they had jacks with hand winches, one man to a jack, and everybody went up at the same time. By the time you got to the last two or three rings, things were getting heavy. And we could only raise one ring at a time. Disconnect the jacks and reset for the next ring.....
Cassius Puckett we had to to the same thing on our farm, and we were trying to rush, and as a result of trying to go to fast with the jacks, we put to much pressure on one side and the whole bin tipped! Very bad situation!
@@jacobpung4596 ohh, ouch!!! That's what we were worried about, make sure it went up straight and square. What a little bit of pain in the ***. But we got it up, and secured to the floor.

I always wondered how they erected silos - now I know - Thanks good video
Grain bin*
Not a silo
That's enough to make my ears ring for a week of Sundays!
Thanks for the informative video. Who would guess you can put them up that way
Very interesting.
Thanks for videoing and sharing
I like how the roof is rippled for strength did it seem more rigid when you were putting it together
Such a great aerial view! Amazing vid to!
Bet it’s nice and warm in side
The nicest you will ever see it
Friend your farm beautiful
Great Video Ryan ! the drone shot was excellent!!
Scaffolding is probably better but I did help on a bin where you back an auger over the bin and hook a chain around it and down to the top ring, then start laying your roof panel across to that and just have a guy with a ladder in the middle to line it up and bolt it.
Looking good!
Do farmers normally build these bins themselves? Does the supplier recommend contractors to help with the assembly?
Depends on how resourceful and qualified the farmers are. Often a contractor is hired and the farmer and/or his family members assist. Even if they don't take part in actual builders' or specialists' jobs, their presence may be important. There's a bunch of tools, machines and materials on any farm and it could make a difference between smooth operation and interrupting work should a situation arise.
Very good video Ryan love it .
Your farmyard looks great very different from here in lreland
We have 2 sukups a 120ft and a 48ft. Great bins
I noticed the silos in the drone shot, but I don't recall seeing any videos of you ever using the silos. Are they left over form some time in the past, or do you still use them?
That’s a very nice grain bin, and great video!
Hi Farmer John!
Hey Jim! How’re you?
Farmer John KY how is farming going in Madison county hopefully ur making a video today 😀take care
Doing good, working at Red Cross today...bored, lol...u?
Scott Shaver it’s going great. Thanks for asking. I wasn’t able to get a video tonight, but hopefully soon! Hope your day is going well!!
Been waiting on this build!
Would be interested in knowing what the going rate is for a bin this size, that is cost of the concrete base and cost of material for the bin. Sukup must give a discount for the advertising, assuming the label can be seen from the road.
30k for bin 20 k for concrete electric gravel and labor.
How many kinds of grains can be stored in these bins?
Wish our new 200000 went that fast
Sorry for questions, how much cost this one grain bin
will the bin be ready for harvest
I would imagine it was like a sauna in there. BTW, if you decide to increase capacity in the future, are the bins designed where you can add additional layers?
The could if it was engineered for that but not likely.
Great video ! Do you know the actual count of all the bolts used to assemble the entire bin ?
Baby Grain Bin!!!!
How will you unload the bin if it doesn’t have a sweep in the bottom of it
Good work guys :)
I'm Brazilian and I do not understand what you're talking about, but why does a silo go down? What is his function?
How long are those roof panels and what is the approximate weight of them?
What is the thickness of sheet used to build the silo?
In SWG or AWG
Nice work
Is that the same brand as your other new bin?
3:56 look at screw-off nut on bottom right. It not fixed and screw-off by vibration.
Ryan, why did you purchase a Sukup bin???? Just wondering.
Best quote.
Great stuff Ryan, ye're mighty men:):) fair play.
Around here I helped build at the local co op, it was a 750,000bushel bin. About 147 feet tall i think.
Our local coop just put up two 1.5 Million bushel bins to hold corn. Amazing the size.
at 2:35
WoW that's neat...I don't think I ever seen clouds that low before, but maybe we're just a high cloud state here in Ohio :o)
You weren't starting to go a bit nuts with all those nuts and bolts? (Sorry could resist)
Are you going to have stairs again or ladder up the side?
Does your dad like doing this type of work? Thanks for the video.
Yes.
Great video!
How do you ventilate for carbon monoxide from the Jack power unit?
I live less then 30minutes away from sukup manufacturing place in Iowa
Are the silos used anymore?
Why did you go with Sukup over GSI or Brock??
Cheaper. Not that the bins always are but the builders who give us quotes on them including labor mean labor costs are a large part of the total cost.
long ago, when i was a member of the world of work, i encountered a number of sukups, but we spelled it differently back then
what to do on a windy cold rainy sunday…. eat Doritos and drink tea and watch how farms work haha
Great video! How much longer till harvest for you guys?
Great vid ryan
thans for the nice video ;-)
Thanks for the video I think those bins are made in Ohio. I used to haul them to Pennsylvania. Now you need a leg to put up with all those grain bin and a pit to unload I know it takes time to build a nice setup but once you have a leg you never want to go back. To an auger. Have a great day keep up the good work
Made in Sheffield Iowa..
dsm reloader thanks I was there 4 times to pick grain bins up when I was in the trucking business. It's amazing how they get them on a trailer with all the little pieces they're hard to strap down.
You are so pathetic where's the 4020 where is the building remodeling where's the new buildings where's the new skid steer where is the new Bayler and tractor you're so pathetic shut the fuckup. You talk about so much stuff that never happens it's pathetic. You know the Krone will walk circles around you and you will not admit it,what a fucken moron. Karma is coming your way so strong you're not gonna believe it. Oh, and the 4020's I've seen the auction sites there's plenty of power shift 4020's out there so if you wanted one you could have it today moron.
@@jimh6879 ouch
I don’t know if I know someone who lies as much as you do, on every topic imaginable. I also love how you say you bale so many bales a year and have all this custom work, yet you’re still using the same blue and yellow twine that you were at the beginning of this year...yea a whole lot of bales...
What is the cost of just the metal bin?
What's the diameter and eaves height of this bin?
Sukup... Suck Up..... they really need to rethink that name LOL
How many tons is 20.000 bushels .
How much did it cost
How many Silos do you have now?
Are you putting a power sweep in not a stirator
How many cast in grain silo
I assume the elevated floor is last then?
