Pilot was clearly peeling away from the formation. If it had been wake turbulence, it would have been much more sudden - and the aircraft nose would have been pulled hard to the right as the right wing began to get caught in the wake. That didn't happen, the attitude was straight forward the entire time

That FA-18 wasn't that close. Fighter pilots are trained in close formation flying. I doubt the camera aircraft could have turned fast enough to cause a collision, especially as fighter pilots have very fast reflexes... or they don't get to be fighter pilots.
