While everyone is here putting their theories into what the meaning of the video could be, i might as well join in. It’s a toxic relationship. The girl with the braids is doing all these things to impress the other girl, even when she is obviously uncomfortable by the things that she’s being asked to do. As someone who was caught up in my own toxic and abusive relationship, a lot of this speaks to me on a personal level. And as for then end, when she kneels down and eats the rotten fruit, it correlates with the line “when I think of all the fruit I’ve picked, and fed to you just so you spit it out.” As well as “I gave my lover fruit to eat, but she left it at her feet.” This is the fruit that’s left, the fruit that she worked so hard to get for someone that would just ignore it, even actively throw it away. And now she’s claiming it as her own. When I see that I remember what it felt like once I’d identified the toxic behaviors in my relationship, and how it felt to reclaim myself and move forward. This video speaks to me a lot, and I hope that this helps anyone who might be curious.

I was obsessed with this song when I found it on Spotify and wondered how any video could deliver on the driving, uncanny, dark fey vibes and then this video exists. Wonderful.

There's nothing pure about this relationship. It's toxic as the writer says above.

I gave my lover fruit to eat,
But she left it at her feet.
She is always doing that, doing that.
    She is always doing that.
"My God, " I said, "I cannot share.
And you can't leave it lying there.
You are always doing that, doing that.
    You are always doing that."
    And so I
    Wander willows. Scattered pits
Take room behind your cracking lips.
They are always doing that, doing that.
    They are always doing that.
Will cocky runes say mend and dwell,
To grow within our shackled cells.
They are always doing that, doing that.
    I see flowers doing that.
    And so I...
    So, our rotting floor.
    I am sure you craved me once before;
When I think of all the fruit I've found,
And how easily you left it on the ground.
The Hunter's Moon was bleeding red,
The night you left our thorny bed.
    You were always, always...
    You were always...
Last night I dreamt I kissed your feet,
And held you on our dusty sheets.
I am always doing that, doing that.
    I am always doing that.
    And so I...
    And so I...
    And so I...
    And so I...
    So, our rotting floor.
    I am sure you craved me once before;
When I think of all the fruit I've picked,
And fed to you just so you could spit it out.
I gave my lover fruit to eat,
But she left it at her feet.
She is always doing that, doing that.
    She is always doing that.

I dont view this as a toxic but speaks as someone encouraging the other girls growth and confidence to which she appears to be timid..then begins to fall for the other or is jealous of the affections given to her...there are many different ways they can go however this is what I perceive it as

What does the ending mean (the bespectacled girl running off to bite an apple)? Weird. Overall, this video reminds me of the movie "Heavenly Creatures', starring a young Kate Winslett. 🍎

i would venture to say that it's a metaphor for giving up on people who abuse your love and resigning to love only yourself

Seems like the girl eating the apple wanted the other girl for herself, but the other girl was interested in boys.

The song is narrated by a woman in a relationship with another woman who does not does not truly appreciate the narrator. Ultimately the woman leaves the narrator, who is filled with unrequited longing but also bitter recognition that the relationship had rotted away. The very first (fan-made, for Dimension 20) video I saw using this song dramatized a betrayal in which the narrator is slain upon the orders of her lover, who is then haunted by this, and perhaps literally haunted by the spirit of the narrator. As for my interpretation of this official video, the girls represent the lovers in the song, having dangerous (physically and emotionally) adventures in an abandoned village, but the one without the glasses (taking the role of the leader) sees it as just a bit of fun, while the one in the glasses takes it more seriously, is more aware of the risks she is being pulled into, and consequently developing a much deeper emotional connection to the other girl and their quasi mystical adventures (becoming blood-sisters and drinking wine, and possibly imagining they are performing witchy dance rituals around a fire). The one without the glasses is ready to get into the car and go back to “normal life”, not understanding that what they shared had a much deeper meaning to the one in glasses - who feels forever changed, and rather than return to “normal” (leaving behind the mystery and mysticism and close bond she was developing with the other girl) perhaps would risk death by eating rotten fruit (or in surviving, prove her newfound semi-mystical self empowerment and resiliency). In short, two girls have a fantasy adventure, and one of them becomes more deeply invested in it than the other - and in recognizing this, the follower chooses in the end to break away from the leader and remain in the fantasy.
