I took my bluetooth out and threw it towards the dog, it was hilarious, the look on his face, pure magic. Glad you have better equipment now, this was a blast from the past! Flipping thru vids for canopy ideas and came upon this old gem.
SUPER EASY to follow along and without a doubt; very practical. I was about to construct my stand for my 55 gal. by mounting it to the studs in the living room wall by using 4" lag bolts going through 2x6 lumber hoping it will support the weight of the aquarium and all its inhabitants... Bad Idea! This idea has been scraped! After watching your video on how you built your aquarium stand, I decided to go with that plan instead! I'll still use the 2x6 lumber on the bottom of the stand for the frame but will most likely use 2x4's for the legs and other supports. Much like you did in your video... Thanks for taking the time to explain all that is required - My wall thanks you too!
The reason there is so much static is a really simple reason, because this video is such high quality as far as informational value this is a true test of the human attention span. Great video regardless, thanks for the help!
These Videos are really helpful, I'm getting on 6ft tank and this is gonna save me loads on which I can put into filtration and fish instead of a expensive stand.
I love the advice and tutorials that you have created. Seems that your videos could use some voice ofer work instead of straight to video. That way you can avoid issues such as microphone noise as well as make them a little more compact and maybe even allow you to compile them into one video o a disk to sell on your website etc. thanks for your hard work. I can't wait to get started on my stand build.
You should do a voice over or something on this video. I really enjoy all the information you provided and your videos have helped and inspired so many projects of my own. Thanks
Wished you wrap the the stand first im not going to use the canopy i got turtles :/ but its all good how long is it going to be when you upload the finish?
I'm looking to do this on a reef aquarium. is there a chance the wood would bow or spoil due to the evaporation of the salt water and heat from the tank. many thanks in advance
stuchat11 little late here but I would paint the inside with a white exterior paint. This will both protect the inside of the canopy from the moisture, and act like a reflector to reflect the lighting back into the tank.
hello there maybe you can help me with this question..i have a30 gallon aquarium and need a glass top for it ...does the aquarium glass top need to have a small gap to allow air to enter or escape from the aquarium or can i get an exact cut and place it on? ive had issues before where i only cut the corner of the glass lid to allow the air hose to go in and the food starts to mold i figure its due to high humidity however when i leave a 2 inch gap on the glass from side to side it vents fine and no mold ever builds on left over food. i built a canopy out of wood and would rather the glass not have any cuts since i would hate for the evaporation to penetrate the wood then later rot it ...thanks for any advice.
I do my base bigger so I can run small little cleats on the inside cuz I always generally run the small hang on the back filter just the skim the surface plus it leaves the back of the canopy open for ventilation
what size plywood for wrapping did u use? I don't want it to be to heavy but i have 48" 1/2" my fish tank is 48" long so if thats not to think It'll be as cheap as making the frame and getting screws. Also I seen cheap lighting with a ShopLight i want to mount into the canopy but you mentioned to cover it to keep moisture from it can i just use a clear ceiling light cover panel (can find at menards website)
@Mexiyeah You can use a canopy like this for turtles, if it's tall enough . You can put a basking area on top the tank this way, which will alow you to fill it to the top. With turtles, the more water, the better. Just add a plexyglass viewing window in the front and maybe the sides if you want. I have something similar, except I just used plywood, brackets, nuts and bolts. I want to built one like this, though because it will definitely look nicer.
what are your thoughts on the weight of a canopy? I used 2x2's for the frame of mine and wrapped it with 5/8s cabinet grade plywood. I plan on making the tank with 3/8 inch acrylic but I am mildly concerned about how much weight the aquarium will hold. will the canopy make the acrylic bow out more? my canopy weighs between 50-80 lbs... here is a video of my stand and canopy if you want to look at it to get a better idea.
I just finished the frame for my 120g show tank...your vids are very informative. I bought the tank from a member of my family and before he sold it to me he cut the center brace. In your opinion, is the structural integrity jeopardized? I don't want issues with bowing and if you think it will do you have any suggestions on fixing it?
Why so much static noise? Clicked to watch because I watch you and your projects all the time and I’m getting ready to build a custom canopy with hinged top for my wife’s 38 gallon bow front and our 75 gallon Lake Malawi tank.
@uarujoey Lol alright Im building a 135G stand from your video as we speak haha any advice? im at the part putting the legs on the bottem base havent put the top base yet.
hi i was wonder would it be ok to use 2x2 instead as my tank is only 60cm*30cm*40cm i think its about 80 liter tank i would like to have the heghit of me stand at total of 80cm so was wondering if 2x2 wud be ok as i have loads of it in me shed thanks
Norman Adkins late reply here but just in case you still need help. A canopy will not help with a broken brace. For the safety of your fish and home you should replace the brace! Their are many types of bracing out their and you should be able to find a suitable replacement.
Great video but, WOW, is there a lot of hissing. It sounds like a Radio off the station a bit. Were you using a Wireless Mic. with the making of this Video? Hissing isn't constant but when it's there it is horribly annoying. Of course it could be my Fibre Internet connection. I have heard that once in a while Radio signals can override the signal.
+The king of DIY Well, I am kind of glad it wasn't my connection. I have just found and started watching your videos and so far I have found them very informative. I used to be heavily into Aquariums. I had 15 at one time, all the way from a 200 gallon Ciclid tank( so they wouldn't beat each other up too badly) all the way down to my 3 yr. old granddaughters Betta tank which she guarded with her life beside her bed. I am going to buy a plain 50 to 60 gal. tank and set it up bit by bit so i get what i want and your videos will save me a ton of money I think. IE: I will be building my own stand rather than paying $200 for one. Thanks for all the Vids so far.
Would be better to nail that with finish nails since you’re gonna glue it. The glue is what’s going to hold it together and no mater how small the screw is.. it’s going to be hard not to split the wood on the ends even if you predrill for them. The splitting will occur when you try to sink the screw head into the wood for a proper finish later. Also if you ask for 2x1 you’re going to get a blank look they are 1x2 furring strips.
+Keith Hersey Its a 4 year old video. The problem was with the microphone. I cant change anything about it. I have more videos on stands coming out soon though.
Wish I had a power saw to cut things straight...... But I don't! So I just made a tank stand for a 90l tank out of 18mm ply from the off cuts section of my local diy place. It cost me £9!!!! Might upload a video. The only skills needed is to use a screwdriver and a drill! No cutting multiple lengths to the same size, all ply cut on the day places big sheet saw!
I took my bluetooth out and threw it towards the dog, it was hilarious, the look on his face, pure magic. Glad you have better equipment now, this was a blast from the past! Flipping thru vids for canopy ideas and came upon this old gem.
Nice to see how far Joey has come.

AWESOME WORK,VERY SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS!!
Hey, can you make a DIY video on a Terrarium Screen Cover? Like a double hinged one so we can clean the tank without moving the basking lights etc.
what fish are you going to go with for that tank and how do you find the room in your house to fit all these tanks?
GREAT VIDEO! I WOULD RECOMEND COUNTERSINKING YOUR SCREWS. THIS WILL MAKE IT LOOK NEATER AND WOULD HELP WHEN YOU WRAP IT.
Thank you saved me hundreds. Luv your vids.
I'm getting ready to make a fish tank enterinment stand with a place for canister filter. Would love to see your ideas
Your videos are on point very descriptive and detailed i personally really appreciate it. Thanks bud n keep them comin.

Funny I'm just here for the canopy

i am getting a 125 gallon but im not sure what filter to use, i dont wanna have to make a sump or spend over 200$ on a filter any suggestions joey?
Joey, Great Video!! One question though: How would this canopy apply to a glass aquarium with the black frames?
Finally!! Great work Joey!

GREAT JOB. DO YOU HAVE ANY UPDATES?
what sizes were the frame wood on this one? and what kind of wood is it?
can you show how to build a 96x24x24 glass aquarium, it would be great help
I would love if you could show how to build a turtle topper, they are really expensive and I wanted to make one for my 55 gallon
For a 40 gallon breeder how would you cut the canopy frame pieces? Dimensions are supposed to be 36x18x17.
hi i was wonder would it be ok to use 2x2 instead as my tank is only 60cm*30cm*40cm i think its about 80 liter tank

how do you support the aquarium with the center support?
Im sorry, i am kind of new to diy aquariums
What about with using canister filters? Can you build a *backless canopy?
awesome videos keep them coming.
What's your views on canister filters
Please re do the canopy tutorial at some point, I vastly prefer your tutorials to others
Ozzie Powell I know I don’t think he will ever do unless everybody wants that to happen again
@uarujoey Oh! I got it now!! Thanks for your speedy response!!
How much would it cost for acrylic for a 600 gallon tank dimensions are 96x48x36. Please man need help
real clear instruction..bravo!
how big of a drill bit did you need to use to predrill
Look up how thick #6 screws are and then pre drill a hole that is a little smaller than that thickness
Thank you Sir!
Joey! What kind of potato did you film this with?
hello joey, i am wondering if a canopy can help or fix a broken center support on an 80gallon aquarium.
thank you.
Norman Adkins late reply here but just in case you still need help.

Thank you. I did not risk it, as it is a 90 gal.

Hey joey, can you remake this series with making franks new tank in you're bedroom
Can you make a video of a complicated canopy?
How much did it cost you to build the canopy ?
My left ear enjoyed this video.
He seems so mellow in this video compared to the more updated vids. What is up with him ?

I have a 29 gallon biocube aquarium.. I want to build the stand
just wondering why dont you use 45 cuts in your wood work
Good job
i was going out td to get the 406 then i reallized that the aqua clear 110 was a thrid of the price and had more flow with a bigger filter "bucket"
This video has almost lost the audio. it is about 1/60 th of normal volume. Maybe it needs to just be uploaded again.
+Keith Hersey Its a 4 year old video. The problem was with the microphone. I cant change anything about it. I have more videos on stands coming out soon though.
nice dude
my right ears lonely :L, great video!
whats goin on with the sound?
Please redo this video
Wish I had a power saw to cut things straight...... But I don't! So I just made a tank stand for a 90l tank out of 18mm ply from the off cuts section of my local diy place. It cost me £9!!!! Might upload a video. The only skills needed is to use a screwdriver and a drill! No cutting multiple lengths to the same size, all ply cut on the day places big sheet saw!
Yo do not fasten the canopy to the aquarium?
Good videos, I'm gonna build a 155 bow front
Top video
This is very retro
uh...No sound at all?
im also making a top for mine, i will post the build. its for 2 65g tanks
