“I once was lost in sin, but Jesus took me in, and then a little light from heaven filled my soul. It bathed my heart in love and wrote my name above, just a little talk with Jesus made it right” This song teaches the sinners prayer method of salvation which God's word does not teach. No where in God’s word are we ever taught that a prayer brings one into contact with the saving blood of Christ. In John 3:5 Jesus states; “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (baptism). Baptism is significant because it is an act of obedience that bring one into contact with the blood of Christ, and it does this by a symbolic act of death, burial, and resurrection, “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.” (Romans 6:3-5) The apostle Paul states in Galatians 2:20, “ I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me”. Here Paul is speaking of his own immersion in water, where he died to sin, and now lives the life Christ asks him to live (a life of obedience to God). In 2 Corinthians 5:6-7 Paul tells us, “So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.” We walk by faith, means to be obedient to God. “not by sight”, we walk in obedience to God, toward that which we cannot see - Heaven. One cannot know what we are to do in this life, if we do not first hear Gods word - Romans 10:17. Acts 17:30 commands everyone to repent - literally to “change ones mind”. We are to change the way we think, particularly in light of God’s word which He has given us. Paul states it best when he said; “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?” Romans 6:1 Although we believe in God, and change the way we think about God, and therefore the way we behave in God’s sight, that alone is not enough to save. We must appeal to God for a good conscience - having been freed from sin, the exact point this happens is when we are immersed in water - baptism (1 Peter 3:21) Just a little talk with Jesus will NOT make it right, “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” 1 Peter 3:12 God will only hear you, when you obey Him. This song is false teaching.
