It’s so beautiful when you know the story behind the song. How a man could write this masterpiece in the trauma he was under gives God all the glory of his power and grace.

Churches who have abandoned these traditional hymns in favor of contemporary praise music probably don't even realize what they've lost. We need these old hymns. They help tie us to the historical Body of Christ. Let us all take to heart the message in this hymn.
The history of this song is incredibly moving as well. The poet who wrote the lyrics had recently lost his son in the Great Chicago Fire, lost his fortunes in property investments that were burned to the ground, and then his four daughters died in a shipwreck crossing the Atlantic, which he would have been on had he not had last-minute legal work to finalize. As his own ship sailed across the Atlantic, the captain informed him when they crossed the point where his family's ship had gone down. He then went to his cabin, wept, and penned this poem.

No matter how good my life currently was or is, this song has always brought me to my knees in tears. Currently I am working through the grief of a dearly beloved father figure, my father-in-law. He was so good to my mom for 12 long years. Two days ago, late in the evening, he passed away suddenly- virtually alone, from what the coroner believes was a heart attack, while preparing for the Lord’s work the next day. I pray that he is no longer in pain, and can finally see his first wife again, who also passed away suddenly 15-years ago. I also pray that those whose lives he helped turn back toward God will continue to turn toward God in honor of his memory and his labor with their hearts and souls. He was no preacher- just a godly man with the occasional temper, and he was a leader. I love you
It is a Capella and some people don't like it because it doesn't have instrumental music. I am a member of the Church of Christ and this is how we sing! It is beautiful! Our voices are the instrument God made for us to sing praises to Him. A man made instrument can not compare with the instrument God made! This is my favorite hymn! This is one of the songs that I chose for my mom's funeral. She had told me she didn't have a favorite hymn that she liked them all. This hymn is so comforting in time of loss!

For me too. It was in the year 1992, when I was not sure about whether I was forgiven or not , the Lord spoke to me through tre same lines. My sin not in part but the whole is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more praise the Lord praise the Lord oh my soul. Instantly those words delivered me from all doubts and granted me assurance of forgivenes of all my sins in whole. The Lord knows how I jumped inside the house between roof and the floor thanking dear Lord. I was 25 then. Since then this song has been my own. Praise Jesus.
Last Oct 2020, my 10-year old nephew met an accident. He was hit by a motorcycle and had fractured his right leg. He had undergone surgery and by God's grace, he was discharged from the hospital 5 days after his admission. He was crying every night because of bad dreams from the accident. He kept asking why he had been through pain and why God had allowed that to happen. I cried with him and I answered that God does not want to do us any harm. I was brokenhearted by his question and I remember all the trials of Job and his faith in God. I sat beside him and played this comforting song which made him sleep well that night. After that, we kept playing this song and the other songs you covered and eventually he can sleep peacefully again. I told him that even though I don't have the right answers to his questions, we should be thankful to God that he is alive and survived the accident. God comforted him through this song. Thank you for your rendition and I thank God for giving you this talent. God bless you!

9/13/2024... my humble prayer is that even though Satan buffets us with different kinds of trials in life we will have the courage to submit to His will and be able to sing "it is well with my soul". It is indeed a privilege and a joy when we meet various trials in life since we share Jesus' suffering on the cross and it's nothing compared to what He suffered on Calvary to save you and me. Praising God in prosperity and adversity through Christ Jesus strength and grace. Maranatha! Jesus is coming again and it's very soon.

Clear insight, dear heart I'm so sorry for the diagnosis you received they are not your , kidney failure exctra they are disease not your disease I believe Holy Spirit is your healer and you can teach of your healing . I love this song especially this way with this beautiful young man's arraignment. I think demonic spirits are trying to kill my son . A mentally ill man hit him so hard it fractured his orbital bone in 3 places and then someone tried to hit him in the same spot and now he is seeing spots. But he's still doing drugs maybe drinking , doing things to get his drug if choice stealing tricing. This is why I'm here , finding shelter in God's wing. The story behind this song is incredible. So here it is: Horatio lost everything financially in the Great Chicago fires and about the same time lost his 4 year old son to Scarlet Fever. Wanting a change, the family was going to go to Europe, he had to stay behind at the last minute. The ship carrying his wife and daughters sank leaving in his family only his wife alive. The captain of his ship when he crossed, called him to the Bridge when they got close to where his daughters perished and looking out over the waves this song was written. I can't imagine that kind of peace in Christ after all of that. But, that's the hope we have in Christ!

I think demonic spirits are trying to kill my son . A mentally ill man hit him so hard it fractured his orbital bone in 3 places and then someone tried to hit him in the same spot and now he is seeing spots. But he's still doing drugs maybe drinking , doing things to get his drug if choice stealing tricing.

I love these old hymns. Not just because I grew up singing 🎶 them, but because they tell the entire story written in the Bible - Christ & what He did for us is told simply in the lyrics! ❤️
The story behind this song is incredible. So here it is: Horatio lost everything financially in the Great Chicago fires and about the same time lost his 4 year old son to Scarlet Fever. Wanting a change, the family was going to go to Europe, he had to stay behind at the last minute. The ship carrying his wife and daughters sank leaving in his family only his wife alive. The captain of his ship when he crossed, called him to the Bridge when they got close to where his daughters perished and looking out over the waves this song was written. I can't imagine that kind of peace in Christ after all of that. But, that's the hope we have in Christ!
