When you said to your boss "I'm not here for the income, I'm here for the outcome", that just proves your love and dedication to your profession. May you have a blessed holiday this year, Dave! Happy Rails To You, Sir!!
Thank you for the nice comment John. Seems like the older I get the more I appreciate this job and what I can still do. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the kind words Wilbur. Seems like I appreciate more the work now than when I was younger, took a lot of things for granted back then. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
It's a blessing to have a job that has you excited to be there. Track was sounding pretty good. I'm glad that Iron Senergy is putting in the time and money to slowly rehabilitate it from the poorer state that it was in from the old company's lack of investment. Thanks for another great video, Dave!
Thank you Shane for the nice comment. Yes it certainly is a very good thing they are spending money on the track, the railroad is the life blood of the mine, without it we couldn't transport very much coal at all. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
As a 70 year year old still working, I agree with all you said. It is a blessing when you enjoy your job and also we get to enjoy it with you. Seasonal Greetings Dave, take care.
Thank you Andy for the nice comment. It truly is a blessing when you can still get up in the morning and go to a job you love to do. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.
Have to keep a close watch on track in winter time for sure David. Hope you and your family also have a most happy holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Once again our man Dave gives us answers to questions we didn't know to ask. 😄 You keep the topic interesting and informative, explaining not only "what" is being done but also "why" and "HOW." I hope you and your lovely wife have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy and safe New Year.
Thank you for the nice comment Robert, glad to hear you enjoyed the show. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Douglas. These track inspections are pretty important to catch small things before they develop into bigger problems down the line. Very much appreciate your taking the time to pay us a visit and check out the cold weather inspection video my friend.
Yes it does Gary. We typically have 5 to 6 joint pull aparts here every year. So far this year I've only had 1, so keep your fingers crossed this will be a good year and we won't have anymore. The only good thing about pull aparts is I get to light the Fire Snake and make a video of that. People love seeing things on fire....:-) Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Clarence, glad you enjoyed. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Thank you Scotty. Track inspections are pretty important to find things hopefully before they turn into major repair jobs or worse derailments. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping do a track inspection my friend.
Gotta love this inverted weather with El Nino. Up here in Rhinelander our lows have been in the 30s with highs in the 40s and NO SNOW! Thanks for taking us to work with you again, liked it much!
Yes so far this has been a very mild winter Poowg, I like it, however the cold at night and warm during the day is hard on my track. Glad you enjoyed the video. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you Joe for the very kind words. Hope you and your family also have a most happy holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Wishing you and yours a merry and safe Christmas Dave! Personally, I'm 55 years old and, my wife is 54 and, we've both missed a lot of family time due to our careers. I'm an owner operator truck driver, my wife is a nurse practitioner at a trauma center. With all that said, this holiday season will be the last that we miss. I'll be leaving early tomorrow morning for an "out and back" run and she's already at work (she'll be working 12hr + shifts through next Friday). I'll leave again Christmas afternoon and be home early next Saturday morning. We both still love our jobs but, our grandchildren aren't getting any younger and we don't want to miss any more that what we already have. Our "official" retirement day will be next Sunday (New Years Eve) and, weather permitting, the kids and grands will all be coming home to help us celebrate it! 2 weeks after that, my 2006 Freightliner Classic XL will be headed off for a motorhome conversion. With 600 horses under my right foot and 13 gears under my right hand, it should still be a fun ride going to visit family and friends! I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for you at rail crossings in Pennsylvania as well as watching every video that you post!
Thank you Mike for the nice comment. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Fortunately I work close to home and can be with family for the most part for important occasions. I do hear you on missing out on a lot of things, that is a tough life being an owner operator. I certainly wish for you and the Mrs. a great retirement! You are blessed to have grand children close that you can enjoy. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
My dad was a good man AE, he taught me a good work ethic and to be honest. Thank you so much for the very kind words. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you Lewis for the very kind words. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Dave, I like your mindset. I am a greenskeeper and I try to do my best for my employer. If I succeed, they succeed. I have good days and so so days. I’m 58 years old and I get tired. When they succeed, people come and pay money to enjoy the golf course. ⛳️😊.
Thank you for the nice comment George. I too have good days and so so days, but the older I get seems like the more I appreciate my job and that I can still do it. When I was 58 my track buddy was 64 and retiring. I thought to myself back then, how in the world am I ever going to make it to 64, yet I did and am still going. Hang in there my friend. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection.
Thank you Kathie for the very kind words. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.

Thank you dboatube, glad to hear you enjoyed this one. Yes it loads pretty fast doesn't it! That's where they load the train at. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Raymond. You may not believe this or not, but I still am learning new things about the RR all the time. That's pretty neat. Great to hear you are enjoying the shows. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment AC. Great to hear you still love what you do, that makes all the difference in the world. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
when you are a positive individual, and your profession is something you love to do! it is never “work! “ it like I have always said, “you are only able to do your best in your position “ but your attitude can have a positive impact upon others to do the same! if you do 100% you keep your area so safe! by doing that someone will go home in the same condition that they arrived ! there are so many hazards dealing with any railroad ! thanks for the explanation about the rail inspection, it is key to minimize joint gaps, or damaged bolts! you do not want the joints to break apart with an engine passing over it! great job ,you keep me smiling!
Thank you for the very nice comment Barry. Track inspections try to catch things and fix them before they turn into major repair jobs or worse derailments. Glad to hear you are still smiling....:-) Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
When i was in the mines the company shut down for two week between Christmas and new years. Although there wasn't any miners working, everything still had to be preshifted every 8 hours. I lived about a mile from the mine so I'd volunteer as many preshifting trips i could. Its was around a 3 hour trip from porthole to porthole and i got paid double time and a half for 8 hours for each run!
Whenever they shut down here the mine still has to be fire bosses Jughead. I believe that is federal law. But you have to have fire boss papers to do an inspection of the mine. They are planning on taking one of their vacation periods next year here Christmas week, the other week will be at Thanksgiving. Double time and a half is good money, good for you! Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
@@ccrx6700 a fire boss has to do the inspection here to buy the company required a mine emergency technician go with them. That's where I came in! I didn't want anything to do with bossing papers but I was a MET.
I really am a fan of the videos you make. I will always watch your stuff before anything else. I've been busy and can't watch as much youtube as I'd like, but I always watch your videos before anything else. thanks!

Thank you Daniel and glad you enjoyed. I guess working this track full time for the past 18 years I should know a little bit of something about it.... :-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to ride the rails with us and check out the track inspection video my friend.
What a wonderful video Dave! So much fascinating information to ponder. Very impressed by the high tech scooby doo detector too 🙂 Sure is an interesting time for you and the crews as the seasons change. Oh, and 54 was indeed a very good year Dave, just had my 69th 🙂 Safe travels 👍
Thank you for the nice comment Richard. Happy birthday and wishing for you many more to come. Seems like the older i get the more I appreciate my job and that I can still do it. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
I believe that our neighboring mine Baily sends some of their coal to Baltimore Jim, we used to via CSX but no longer send our coal that way. It was for overseas to Korea and S. American, but they didn't renew those contracts. I would love to go and visit where they load the coal at in Baltimore sometime. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
I’m with you I like winter that gets cold and stays that way once things adjust to the cold they seem to hold up better in my opinion anyway Merry Christmas to you and the Mrs!
You are right, cold and stay cold Wayne and things do seem to hold up better once it sets in place. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
You are right about that JPBSR1, sure wish he and I could ride track together, we would have a great time talking railroading! The Reading was a great RR in it's day. When we played Monopoly I always had to buy the Reading RR....:-) Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the kind words Tom. Got to do inspections to try and find things and fix them before they turn into major repair jobs or worse, derailments. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Like has been said many times. "If you love your job, you'll never have to work a day in your life." Really like your winning team analogy. Keep up the good work. Merry Christmas to you and yours Dave and may you have a wonderful New Year.
Thank you Donnie for the very nice comment. If you want to be on a winning team, you have to do your part in making that happen. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.
Thank you for the nice comment Marty. It does seem like the older I get the more I appreciate the job I have and that I can still go to work. Too a lot of things for granted when I was younger. I learned more about the rails in your video. What a great job explaining what happens to rails in the summer heat and winter cold. Track maintenance is a lot more than making sure they are straight! Have a great Christmas.
Thank you Mary for the very kind words. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.

Interesting topic with a lot of applied physics. I'm 79 and semiretired but have a part time job that I really like so I understand you comments and am so glad that you have an outlet for your talents and energy
Thank you for the nice comment Nat, glad you have a job you enjoy doing also, that makes it a whole lot easier to get up in the morning and go to work. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Hi Dave, seasons greetings from the U.K. A very informative video as always. by the way, over here ties are known as "sleepers" and joint bars are "fishplates"

When the temperature drops below zero, everything wants to play up. 1989, we had several days -15F. Every little task becomes a JOB. Machines don't want to start, everything is stuck, and nothing seems easy. Thanks for all the great videos. Takes me back to a simpler time.
You are so right about that halfinchholes. Very cold weather seems like everything is a much bigger struggle. Plus here we have a lot more problems with the trains in very cold weather. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Glad you are enjoying the videos.
Thank you Morse for the nice comment. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Looks as if you have a good handle on the line Dave, you seem to have good top and levels all the way up, one of the best freight only lines I have come across. A merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and yours 🎅🎄

Thank you zulubravo. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.
One has to keep their diligence on that track inspection lest and you have both your list of things to look for and then in your mind what to listen for or just doesn't seem right. Of course after years of looking at certain sections you'll easily remember where things are prone to going wrong. Thanks much for showing the truck being loaded and in the mining industry they are large but compared to some of the huge open pit mines they're tiny. A blessed Christmas to you and your family and all your little Junior track inspectors viewing this in the comfort of a warm home
Thank you for the nice comment Paul. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Track inspections are important as you try and catch things early before they turn into major repair jobs or derailments. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Lots of interesting chat on this one Dave Yes a lot of things to look and listen out for. Odd how some places have pull aparts more often, I guess the sun plays a part in that locally heating an area or that area being more shady causing uneven expansion and contraction. A good day with only a few bolts to replace.
Thank you Cedarcam for the very kind words. It is interesting from your comment that we have places the very seldom get any sun during the winter, yet never have joint pull aparts there. Then there are other places like west of the tunnel that don't get much sun, yet have more pull aparts than other areas. Track is strange and I'm still learning about all it's unusual quirks and behaviors. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
You got 12 years on me. I certainly for some unknown reason like work more in my older age than when I was younger. My grandfather worked until he literally couldn't anymore well into his 70s. My dad was no different. Dementia got him in the end but even that didn't stop him until within a year before he died. He passed Dec 15 2020. I hate twiddling my thumbs. I have to have something to do. Interesting about the tracks. Too bad there isn't a way to keep the tracks warm using geothermal of some sort. Heck, some day in the future we might have hover trains and tracks wont be needed anymore. LOL. Merry Christmas and stay safe. 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅
I like work better the older I get too David. Guess I feel very blessed I can still get up in the morning and do it. Whereas when you are younger, you pretty much take things like that for granted. I'm sorry to hear about your father, my mother in law had dementia, it's a very sad situation. Really appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
I do love that enthusiasm you have and pride in your work that you exhibit! I take it that welded track is less likely to break? For those rails, does excessive heat or cold still bother them? Thanks for taking us along! Loved the truck loading at the end!
Thank you for the nice comment Trena. Welded rail doesn't have the joints, joints are very hard to keep up to track surface, they want to keep dropping, they were the weak link in the chain. Welded rail holds up much better for track surface. How much the heat and cold affects welded rail depends on the amount of rail anchors they have in place and that are holding. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Kansas Trains. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
I notice that your rail issues are due to only hauling coal and dust is the reason for your maintenance and cost to your company for the muddy spots. But I am glad you work for such a fine company and treat you very well. 😊 Keep up the great work!😊 I have learned a lot about the railroad industry and always enjoy your videos and how a great railroad works.😊 DE N2JYG
You are certainly right about that Franklin, all the coal that has spilled and leaked from the hopper cars just ruin my ballast, then the water can't drain away and we get muddy spots which then won't hold track surface. It's a real mess here in some places. Really pleased to hear you have learned somethings from the videos. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
What a glorious day to be out working! I wish all my employees were as mentally engaged as you are. I have always said that positivity breeds positivity, but is much more work to create and maintain. Being negative about your employer is much easier and sadly, more fun for some folks. The grass is generally not greener on the other side, just a different type of grass. It means alot to an employer to hear positive comments-they need encouragement as much as employees do! I'm so happy to hear that you have that employer support and they are dedicated to listening, creating a better and more stable work place as well as keeping a vision for the future. 😊
Thank you for the awesome comment Jennifer. You are so right in everything you said. I've found one thing in life, the energy you give off is the energy you get back. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping out with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Robert. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Merry Christmas to you and your family, Dave. I used to drive tanker and hauled a couple loads of out-of-spec antifreeze to a coal plant in rural eastern Kentucky. I inquired about it, and they said it was a cold weather release agent for the washed coal in the cars. Go figure.
Thank you David. I would say the side release agent they use here is a glycol base with some additives in it. Interesting you also hauled some of that similar stuff. It's pretty slimy. Wet coal in aluminum cars has a real tendency to freeze to the sides and also the bottom doors. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.
Yes, Dave. I did enjoy today's episode. I was wondering about the release agent. It seems that graphite would cause too much loss of tractive effort. We use a spray liquid for concrete, but that might hinder the use of coal. Rooby Roo!
Thank you Jon, glad you enjoyed. LB Foster makes a special lubricant to spray the tops of the rails with that is a graphite base, then mix it with water, however you are right, too much graphite and the loco would just sit there and spin and never be able to stop either. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you Rick for the nice comment. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.
What you say and are such a BLESSING TO ALL WHOME WATCH YOU YOUR ATTUDE IS 1,000 % GOOD may the LORD BLESS YOU MORE AND MORE... Mr Magoo in Milo, Maine
Lot's of bolts Russell. But it has paid dividends, got to keep my track together. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Great video and once again took me back down memory lane on the RR. Thanks for sharing this with us and have a wonderful upcoming Holiday weekend.(Steve)

Thank you Scott and you are certainly welcome. Very much appreciate your taking the time to ride the rails with us and check out the track inspection video my friend.
Good job Dave! I love the 'Track defect detection monitor' on the dashboard. Your truck is pretty cool too! So nice to see a guy who loves his job, and takes pride in what he does. PA certainly looks like a nice part of the world. Keep railroadin'!
Thank you for the nice comment Neil and glad you enjoyed this one. This is a nice place to live. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
It was a great ride, Dave. Mini"you" has track#1 done on the layout. Speed restrictions off.2 GP38's and an Alco RS18 are pounding on it. Hopefully, I can take some time and post it. Merry Christmas, Dave&family. Your friend 150 nautical miles away on the north shore of Erie.🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲👷♂️⛏️🙋
Glad you enjoyed Doug. Sounds like you had a good MOW crew on that job. GP's which have 2 axles are much easier on track than the SD models with 3 axles are. Will look forward to watching that video. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Sorry haven’t been on not being well lately I guess 47 years of working in asbestos coal dust and steam oil is finally catching up on me lol ,I’ll be on more often getting back to normal sort of ,thanks for another great vid Dave wishing you and your family a merry Christmas and a happy new year ❤
No need to apologize Lawrie, you just take care of yourself. I sure hope you get things under control and get back to yourself soon! I understand how physical problems can bog a person down. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.
You are right in that Beverly, I'm so very fortunate to have a job I truely love doing. Scooby is now a big You Tube star and has already asked for a pay raise....:-) Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment KC, glad you enjoyed. These track inspections are pretty important to catch small things before they develop into bigger problems down the line. Very much appreciate your taking the time to pay us a visit and check out the cold weather inspection my friend.
Outstanding Dave. Really like the videos. Question, when it is that cold out, what type of clothing, boots and gloves do you recommend or endorse? Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas.
Thank you for the nice comment Bruce. I wear Carhart stuff when it gets really cold out. I actually like the cold weather and don't wear the heavy stuff unless it gets really cold like 10 or below. Fortunately both of my hi rail trucks have good heaters in them! Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
You are right nockreel, glad you enjoyed. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Things tend to break a lot with the cold temps. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.

A lot of folks don't love their job which as you know often makes it difficult to get up in the morning and go. I am very fortunate that I can still do this and love what I do here on the railroad. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
He works pretty well Donald, Yes it often is the simple things that make a big difference in track. Eyes and ears are simple things, but they are vital to track inspections and finding things that will prevent possible derailments. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you for the very nice comment Barbara. I care about my track and what I do. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping out with the track inspection my friend.
That;'s good to hear Denise. You've come to the right place to watch railroading videos here...:-) Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.

Thank you Peter. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Years ago, on the old IC Peoria district, it used to be jointed track. The MoW would use a track vehicle that would come through and loosen and then tighten the bolts on the joints. Very loud and hydraulic of course. The only time I ever saw such a machine. They had problems with some of them and would have to replace them as well. Of course, the jointed rail is long gone, and I would asume the same with the machine. Good video Dave.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed Aaron. We too have a bolting machine, it is gas powered and does one bolt at a time, have to push it down the tracks. I've heard they have machines that are hydraulic and can tighten all 3 bolts on one side at a time, but I've never seen one. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping out with the track inspection my friend.
Very nice video as always! I really appreciate your efforts. What is the purpose of the side-release agent you talked about? Wising you and your family a very Merry Christmas!
I'm sure Dave can clarify - in general, side release agent is likely meant to prevent the coal from freezing to the sides of the car (and not unloading - it's a long day with a crowbar) or to keep the coal car doors from freezing together. The stuff is probably some kind of glycol with a number of chemical additives, and colored black because of the coal dust it picks up.
Thank you Jeff for the nice comment. Side release agent is sprayed into the cars on the sides and bottom to keep the coal from freezing to the doors and the sides. It works very well. We used to have to beat the doors and sides with sledge hammers to try and get the coal to come out of the cars, sure glad those days are over!! Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.
Fortunately both of my hi rail trucks have good heaters in them northdetroit! So far it's been a very mild winter, today was up around 60! Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Your welcome Eddie, glad to hear you are enjoying the videos. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
You are certainly welcome Santafefrank. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
You and Scoobydoo have a very necessary and important job! Love your work ethic.
Thank you for the nice comment. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection.
When you said to your boss "I'm not here for the income, I'm here for the outcome", that just proves your love and dedication to your profession. May you have a blessed holiday this year, Dave! Happy Rails To You, Sir!!
Thank you for the nice comment John. Seems like the older I get
the more I appreciate this job and what I can still do. Hope you and
your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much
appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold
weather track inspection my friend.
You are one of a kind Dave! We need more people like you in this world ! Thanks for the ride .
Thank you for the kind words Wilbur. Seems like I appreciate
more the work now than when I was younger, took a lot of things
for granted back then.
Yes it certainly is a very
good thing they are spending money on the track, the railroad is
the life blood of the mine, without it we couldn't transport very much
coal at all.
It truly is a blessing when
you can still get up in the morning and go to a job you love to do.
Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also
have a blessed holiday season.
Yes things expand and contract with temps great video Dave Merry Christmas 💞
Have to keep a close watch on track in winter time for sure David. Hope you and your family also have a most happy holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Once again our man Dave gives us answers to questions we didn't know to ask. 😄 You keep the topic interesting and informative, explaining not only "what" is being done but also "why" and "HOW."
I hope you and your lovely wife have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy and safe New Year.
Thank you for the nice comment Robert, glad to hear you enjoyed
the show. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
And I surely could not agree more. He’s very dynamic one-of-a-kind.
Thank you for the nice comment Douglas. These track inspections are pretty important to catch small things before they develop into bigger problems down the line. Very much appreciate your taking the time to pay us a visit and check out the cold weather inspection video my friend.
Cold weather causes track contractions joint bars get stressed other than soil problems great video thanks Dave
Yes it does Gary. We typically have 5 to 6 joint pull aparts here every
year. So far this year I've only had 1, so keep your fingers crossed
this will be a good year and we won't have anymore. The only good
thing about pull aparts is I get to light the Fire Snake and make
a video of that. People love seeing things on fire....:-) Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thumbs up 👍 for the opportunity to ride with you 😊
Thank you for the nice comment Clarence, glad you enjoyed. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold
weather track inspection my friend.
Good stuff, Dave. Thanks for another fun informative ride with a pro. 🤠👍
Thank you Scotty. Track inspections are pretty important to find
things hopefully before they turn into major repair jobs or worse
derailments. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me
and helping do a track inspection my friend.
Gotta love this inverted weather with El Nino. Up here in Rhinelander our lows have been in the 30s with highs in the 40s and NO SNOW! Thanks for taking us to work with you again, liked it much!
Yes so far this has been a very mild winter Poowg, I like it, however
the cold at night and warm during the day is hard on my track. Glad
you enjoyed the video. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Dave, you are a joy to watch and so many answers to questions I have had for years. May God bless you with a very merry Christmas.
Congrats on your retirement
Thank you Mike for the nice comment. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Fortunately I work close to home
and can be with family for the most part for important occasions.
I do hear you on missing out on a lot of things, that is a tough life
being an owner operator. I certainly wish for you and the Mrs. a
great retirement! You are blessed to have grand children close that
you can enjoy. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
I greatly admire your sense of vocation and your attitude towards your work. It’s evident you were raised right, young man. ;)
My dad was a good man AE, he taught me a good work ethic and
to be honest. Thank you so much for the very kind words. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Good morning Dave. What a great video. I always love riding the track with you. Have a great weekend my friend.
I too have good days and
so so days, but the older I get seems like the more I appreciate
my job and that I can still do it. When I was 58 my track buddy was
64 and retiring. I thought to myself back then, how in the world am
I ever going to make it to 64, yet I did and am still going. Hang
in there my friend. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection.
The new mine owner is lucky to have you on his team. Have a Merry Christmas!
Thank you Kathie for the very kind words. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also
have a blessed holiday season.
Thanks for sharing Dave. Great channel!
Thank you Calvary on the Fly, glad you are enjoying the shows. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold
weather track inspection my friend.
And I couldn’t appreciate more. He’s a very dynamic person, an explanation and a grand personality.
Appreciate very much your kind words Douglas. Thank You.
Loved the vid! at the end... was that 43tons of coal loaded that fast!?!? WOW!
Thank you dboatube, glad to hear you enjoyed this one. Yes
it loads pretty fast doesn't it! That's where they load the train
at. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thank you for sharing Dave! I learn from you on every episode, pretty soon I will know everything! Not really, but I enjoy your channel very much!
Thank you for the nice comment Raymond. You may not believe this
or not, but I still am learning new things about the RR all the time.
That's pretty neat. Great to hear you are enjoying the shows. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold
weather track inspection my friend.
God bless the Railroads and Railroaders. Trains n Tracks have gave me so much joy for 60+ years now and I love my job too
Thank you for the nice comment AC. Great to hear you still love
what you do, that makes all the difference in the world. Very much
appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold
weather track inspection my friend.
when you are a positive individual, and your profession is something you love to do! it is never
“work! “ it like I have always said, “you are only able to do your best in your position “ but
your attitude can have a positive impact upon others to do the same! if you do 100%
you keep your area so safe! by doing that someone will go home in the same condition that
they arrived ! there are so many hazards dealing with any railroad ! thanks for the explanation
about the rail inspection, it is key to minimize joint gaps, or damaged bolts! you do not want
the joints to break apart with an engine passing over it! great job ,you keep me smiling!
Thank you for the very nice comment Barry. Track inspections try
to catch things and fix them before they turn into major repair
jobs or worse derailments. Glad to hear you are still smiling....:-)
Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Whenever they shut down here the mine still has to be fire bosses
Jughead. I believe that is federal law. But you have to have fire boss
papers to do an inspection of the mine. They are planning on
taking one of their vacation periods next year here Christmas week,
the other week will be at Thanksgiving. Double time and a half
is good money, good for you!
I've been busy and can't watch as much youtube as I'd like, but I always watch your videos before anything else. thanks!
Thank you for the very nice comment Kingibexx, so pleased to hear

Very interesting Dave man with a lot of knowledge
Thank you Daniel and glad you enjoyed. I guess working this track
full time for the past 18 years I should know a little bit of something
about it....
Happy birthday and wishing
for you many more to come. Seems like the older i get the more I
appreciate my job and that I can still do it. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
I was down Baltimore Fairfield yard today. Wondering where all that coal comes from... Now I know... Very cool stuff
I believe that our neighboring mine Baily sends some of their coal
to Baltimore Jim, we used to via CSX but no longer send our coal that
way. It was for overseas to Korea and S. American, but they didn't
renew those contracts. I would love to go and visit where they
load the coal at in Baltimore sometime. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
I’m with you I like winter that gets cold and stays that way once things adjust to the cold they seem to hold up better in my opinion anyway Merry Christmas to you and the Mrs!
You are right, cold and stay cold Wayne and things do seem to hold
up better once it sets in place. Hope you and your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
You and my stepdad would have got along great. He had 46 years on the Reading out of Manville,NJ and the last about 15 years was as a track inspector.
You are right about that JPBSR1, sure wish he and I could ride
track together, we would have a great time talking railroading!
The Reading was a great RR in it's day. When we played Monopoly
I always had to buy the Reading RR....:-) Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Love the video Dave! You are truly dedicated to your craft and your work ethic and positive outlook are inspiring.
Thank you for the kind words Tom. Got to do inspections to try
and find things and fix them before they turn into major repair jobs or worse, derailments. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Like has been said many times. "If you love your job, you'll never have to work a day in your life."
Really like your winning team analogy. Keep up the good work. Merry Christmas to you and yours Dave and may you have a wonderful New Year.
Thank you Donnie for the very nice comment. If you want to be on
a winning team, you have to do your part in making that happen. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.
Kids today just don't have that wonderful drive and vision you have.
Blessings my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Marty. It does seem like the
older I get the more I appreciate the job I have and that I can
still go to work. Too a lot of things for granted when I was younger. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.
Merry Christmas to you and yours Dave! Thank you for sharing your experience with us and your determination and love for your railway.

Hope you and your family also

Interesting topic with a lot of applied physics. I'm 79 and semiretired but have a part time job that I really like so I understand you comments and am so glad that you have an outlet for your talents and energy
Thank you for the nice comment Nat, glad you have a job you enjoy
doing also, that makes it a whole lot easier to get up in the morning

Hi Dave, seasons greetings from the U.K. A very informative video as always.
by the way, over here ties are known as "sleepers" and joint bars are "fishplates"

you enjoyed this one. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Very cold weather seems
like everything is a much bigger struggle. Plus here we have a lot
more problems with the trains in very cold weather. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Glad you are enjoying the videos.
Very informative video Dave. They are pretty lucky to have you there keeping the rail in good condition.
Thank you Ian for the nice comment. Cold weather track inspections are pretty vital to keeping my track safe for the trains. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also have a blessed holiday season.

Nicely done ! 3-26
Thanks so much for riding track with me Alan. Always fun to
take a ride down track here. Appreciate your writing in and
for watching my friend.
Thanks Dave. It's been a wonderful year.
Thank you Earl for the nice comment. Yes it has been a wonderful year, we are all so fortunate. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Merry Christmas Dave to you, your family and the crew you work with 🎄
Thank you zulubravo.
Track inspections are important as you try and catch things early before they turn into major repair
jobs or derailments.
It is interesting from
your comment that we have places the very seldom get any sun
during the winter, yet never have joint pull aparts there. Then there
are other places like west of the tunnel that don't get much sun,
yet have more pull aparts than other areas. Track is strange and
I'm still learning about all it's unusual quirks and behaviors.
Guess I feel very blessed
I can still get up in the morning and do it. Whereas when you are
younger, you pretty much take things like that for granted. I'm
sorry to hear about your father, my mother in law had dementia,
it's a very sad situation.
Welded rail doesn't have the
joints, joints are very hard to keep up to track surface, they want to
keep dropping, they were the weak link in the chain. Welded rail
holds up much better for track surface. How much the heat and cold affects welded rail depends on the amount of rail anchors they have
in place and that are holding. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Awesome Possom Dave Hope You and Your Family have a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Brother 🎄😊🙏
Thank you for the nice comment Kansas Trains. Hope you and
your family also have a wonderful holiday season. Very much
appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold
weather track inspection my friend.
I notice that your rail issues are due to only hauling coal and dust is the reason for your maintenance and cost to your company for the muddy spots.
But I am glad you work for such a fine company and treat you very well. 😊
Keep up the great work!😊
I have learned a lot about the railroad industry and always enjoy your videos and how a great railroad works.😊
DE N2JYG
You are certainly right about that Franklin, all the coal that has
spilled and leaked from the hopper cars just ruin my ballast, then
the water can't drain away and we get muddy spots which then
won't hold track surface. It's a real mess here in some places.
Really pleased to hear you have learned somethings from the
videos.
You are so right
in everything you said. I've found one thing in life, the energy you
give off is the energy you get back. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping out with the track inspection my friend.
Great show again , Dave. MERRY Christmas 🌲🎁 to you'll!!
Thank you for the nice comment Robert. Hope you and your family
also have a wonderful holiday season.
I would say the side release agent they use here is
a glycol base with some additives in it. Interesting you also hauled
some of that similar stuff. It's pretty slimy. Wet coal in aluminum
cars has a real tendency to freeze to the sides and also the bottom
doors. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also
have a blessed holiday season.
Yes, Dave. I did enjoy today's episode. I was wondering about the release agent. It seems that graphite would cause too much loss of tractive effort. We use a spray liquid for concrete, but that might hinder the use of coal.
Rooby Roo!
Thank you Jon, glad you enjoyed. LB Foster makes a special lubricant to spray the tops of the rails with that is a graphite base, then mix
it with water, however you are right, too much graphite and the
loco would just sit there and spin and never be able to stop either. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me and helping with the track inspection my friend.
Thanks Mr. Dave. Another great and very informative video sir. Stay warm and safe out there. Hope you and your family have a great Christmas.

So nice to see a guy who loves his job, and takes pride in what he does.
PA certainly looks like a nice part of the world. Keep railroadin'!
Thank you for the nice comment Neil and glad you enjoyed
this one. This is a nice place to live. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good
day my friend.
Sounds like you had a good MOW crew
on that job. GP's which have 2 axles are much easier on track than the SD models with 3 axles are. Will look forward to watching that
video. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold weather track inspection my friend.

asked for a pay raise....:-) Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.

Outstanding Dave. Really like the videos. Question, when it is that cold out, what type of clothing, boots and gloves do you recommend or endorse? Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas.
Thank you for the nice comment Bruce. I wear Carhart stuff when it
gets really cold out. I actually like the cold weather and don't wear
the heavy stuff unless it gets really cold like 10 or below. Fortunately both of my hi rail trucks have good heaters in them! Very much
appreciate your riding the rails with us and helping do a cold
weather track inspection my friend.

I wish I could love my job the way you do.
A lot of folks don't love their job which as you know often makes it
difficult to get up in the morning and go. I am very fortunate that
I can still do this and love what I do here on the railroad. Very much appreciate your riding the rails with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.
High tech track equipment inspection Scooby Doo, Dave but I know it is the simple things that make the job easy
He works pretty well Donald, Yes it often is the simple things that
make a big difference in track. Eyes and ears are simple things, but
they are vital to track inspections and finding things that will
prevent possible derailments. Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend.

We too have a bolting machine, it
is gas powered and does one bolt at a time, have to push it down
the tracks. I've heard they have machines that are hydraulic and can
tighten all 3 bolts on one side at a time, but I've never seen one.
Side release agent is sprayed
into the cars on the sides and bottom to keep the coal from freezing to the doors and the sides. It works very well. We used to have to
beat the doors and sides with sledge hammers to try and get the
coal to come out of the cars, sure glad those days are over!! Very much appreciate your riding track with me today and helping with the track inspection my friend. Hope you and your family also
have a blessed holiday season.
Stay warm.
