    if you haven't done the spindles already use soda crystals in water in your wheelie bin I did all mine and stripped 2 fireplaces this way i did door trims too just turned them upside down i used 10 packs soda crystals to full bin water left spindles overnight and just used a green scrubber and they came clean very easily i then put the water in an old paddling pool and dipped the fire places the same way was a game changer for me. worth a try!

      I shall try one of the loose spindles and let you know how it goes. Thanks

    Glad you are keeping the skylight! The box is a great idea.
    Yes, painting that wall--even if as a temporary fix-- will make the house feel cleaner and more homey.
    I've heard it said, 'You know, you don't HAVE to have all that stuff. If it spontaneously combusted, would you miss it? If not, consider selling or donating." 😉

    You might consider taking the stair spindles to be dipped by a professional, worth the time and probably cost less in the long run considering the cost of chemical stripper!

    I spent miles too long on my previous house heat gunning all the spindles. Your plan sounds better. I had broken ones that I couldn't fix and swapped upstairs ones to the downstairs. Try water and an iron to get out dents in the banister if you can, but battle scars are part of the history. Yes to filling the cracks on that wall. It's easier to paint than to hand wallpaper. Make the skylight fake as you suggested. You can get glass paint if you change that yellow piece out for clear and then try to match the red. I put white laminated glass in the bathroom to make more light come into the landing upstairs - easy enough to do on old doors. Neighbours should be grateful someone is fixing up next door as it ups their value - wait until they want to do some work.

    Hi Dave. Love your ideas for the skylight. The broken glass is almost certainly the original. It's beautiful. You could probably achieve the same effect with some privacy film that just sticks on. A lot cheaper than new glass. Good luck and happy times in your new home

      I just had a look. Lots of options. Just want to make sure now I can get some glass that conforms with building regs. I assume it would have to be laminated but I will look into that. Thanks.

    Seeing the skylight a good clean and then possibly a window privacy film (not sure what its realy called) placed on the center glass, have seen lots of different patterns. Maybe Amazon would be a starting place.

      It’s currently wire mesh glass so I’ll swap that out for something else. Good idea. I’ll take a look. Thanks.

    Very glad to hear you are keeping the skylight above the hallway. We have one in our Blackpool house, in about the same condition as yours, and I was thinking of a similar solution to yours. Your idea sounds brilliant, so I will follow your lead and do the same with ours. We get so many ideas from your videos, we can't wait to see the next one. Thank you! 🙂

    Hi! Great work! You can try by putting a wet piece of paper towel untop of the dents over night and see if they rise up. Otherwise you can use a soldering iron and a wet kitchen towel to try to stream up the indents. Kind regards a funiture conservator and cabinet maker :)

      Everything’s worth a go. Will give it a go. I could splice in a new piece of wood if I can find something the same with similar grain.
      All the work and we might have to paint it. Which won’t be the end of the world. Anything’s better than what’s there.

  • @cferguson3368

    A suggestion for when you use stripper on the stairwell. Definitely, take balusters off. If you make a trough a bit bigger than the balusters & use your chemicals in that trough, you will be able to manage the mess a bit better. You can make the trough of wood or metal. You can push your chemicals out the end as needed, particularly if you slant the mounting. Not sure what kind of stripper you plan to use...remember that not all strippers work on all paints. However, essentially all strippers work better when warm. One the stripper is applied, wrapping the piece in plastic wrap will help maintain "heat." Don't forget you can use a soft metal or plastic brush for crevices. And you might consider a heat gun.

    I don't have an answer but I am so so glad you are keeping the skylight. Its gorgeous. Check salvage yards for replacement glass. The piece you showed most certainly could have been original.

    • @FromLeedsToWest

    I'm so glad you're keeping the stair railing. Every episode I wonder who could have spent so much time painting it that crazy colour scheme.
    Boxing in the skylight is a good idea. It'll keep any insulation up there away from the glass. If you top the box with double or triple glazing, it shouldn't develop condensation.
    You must be so excited to move in! I hope that all goes well.

    • @FromLeedsToWest

      Thanks Erin. People do keep asking who lived here but it’s difficult to mention it following UA-cam guidelines. Basically they use to deal certain items. Caused chaos on the street and were not what everyday people would call sane.
      The staircase I really want to do the best I can with it. Well with everything that’s left. It’s a shame all the doors and wood work were destroyed around most of the doors.
      It’s are first night as we speak. We are over the moon. So thanks for watching and sharing your thought and continuous support.
      When I started the channel I wasn’t expecting people to be interested. I think this is the first renovation that’s not bank rolled into existence, that I’ve seen anyway.
      Thanks again. We are celebrating 🎉

    If vintage pattern glass is cost prohibitive, a budget friendly but possibly tedious way to replicate the pattern glass, find your local Cricut vinyl cutter to copy your broken piece making a stencil and use etching cream to diy a new sheet of glass for the skylight???

    • @FromLeedsToWest
      @FromLeedsToWest  15 днів тому +1

      We actually have a cricut cutter. So I will look a little deeper into this. Not a bad idea to recreate the original glass. Good shout. Thank you.

    Current state of affairs for me the 3rd bedroom lath & old plaster on the walls have come off today, I had 2 showers. I’m in the same situation as you for the stairs but I’m biting the bullet & taking the ceiling lath & all the old plaster on the walls, messy yes but I think it’ll be worth it & I also have the same spindles as you too, they’ll be a labour of love to get back to wood but worth it.

    Does your wife not want to help at this stage of the renovations,especially with decor and furniture decisions?I had to renovate a similar staircase and had to sand ,fill holes and cracks and painted the walls. could not afford a £1000+ for plastering or wallpapering less than perfect but always possible to either option at a later date if you can spend the money😊

    • @FromLeedsToWest
      @FromLeedsToWest  15 днів тому

      She does want to help. So so much but she’s basically working full time. She gets home and looks after the little one while I try and tackle stuff at the house. I have been looking at a diy skim plaster. Might do that if the filling and sanding fails.
