DJI Mini 4 Pro WIDE ANGLE LENS - Is it worth it?

- Because of my passion for landscapes, my preference is to use wide angle lenses in order to capture as much of the scene as possible.
So, it was natural for me to want to be able to do this with my DJI Mini 4 Pro drone. At the time, I couldn't find out a lot of practical information that easily demonstrated the difference between the Mini 4's normal lens and the wide lens that DJI was offering.
How much wider would the field of view be? Would the photo or video image quality be degraded? How much distortion would the wide angle lens create and how would it perform in lowlight?
This video is my attempt at demonstrating, the visual differences between the Normal and Wide Angle Lenses. To help others out there, who are considering purchasing the Wide Angle lens, but are unsure of whether it'd be worth it.
Thanks for your Work!
Thank you for doing the work that it took to put this video together. IMO you have proven that the wide-angle lens is very useful. In any decent video editor, a lens correction profile could be added to reduce the distortion at the edges. As an audio engineer, I want to personally thank you for properly ducking the background music track during the voiceovers!
Thank you very much. I appreciate your input. Yes, in post the distortion can be rectified with clarity and a little sharpness as well.
Thanks for your review, very helpful!
Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate the difference .
Glad it was helpful in some way.
Thanks, great comparison.
Thank you. I appreciate it
well made and on the point - thank you!
I appreciate it thanks.
Great comparison, well done
Thank you.
All the red reflective tape on the drone helping you ward off bird attacks?
Yes, it seems to be helping. There's some local black crows that would swoop at my drone every single time that I flew in my backyard. Now they aren't doing it any more.
That would make me so anxious when i fly!
I heard those sky-pirates are pretty aggressive down unda!
Here in Cold-ass Canada... i haven't had any birds show the slightest bit of interest in my mini 4 pro... thankfully!
@@JJRossi yes the first time it happened I got spooked. Then when I realised it was going to keep happening from the same flock of birds. I persisted one day. And for over 20 minutes they were at it. So I gave the reflective tape idea a go which I found online. Sounds like your feathered variety are a little more laid back in Canada. Here in the rural parts of Australia, you have to really watch out for the Wedge Tailed Eagles. As they will actually grab your drone.
thanks for the video :)
Thank you from france. Very helpful in the reflexion of buying , or not buying
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it
Great review, and thanks for sharing.
You're welcome and thank you
Ótima comparação!! Vou comprar uma para testar!!
Great comparison , I bought one ,totally going to be worth it.
Thank you and Happy Flying! :)
Thank you for the comparison tests. I am also into landscape photography and I was wondering about the possible distortion, vignetting, lens flares or color changes this add-on might cause.
Thank you for all these tests. I'll get one for my mini 4 pro now.

Thank you, I appreciate it. There can be a little distortion especially when tilting up or down at large angles but generally I've found it okay. Although a little soft in the details in some circumstances, but then I usually increase the sharpness with the DJI Fly app.
Happy Flying!
By far best video to watch to understand lenses wish you did some for other filters ! Thx you again for taking time too make this video for us drone newbies !! :)
Thanks I really appreciate your comments. Happy flying :)
Thanks for showing us the diff.
No problem. Thanks for taking the time to let me know. I appreciate it.
This was a good demonstration, made me buy the wide angle lens.
Very interesting video mate! Good job 😁😍👍
Thanks, I appreciate it :)
Interesting video ... Like a breath of fresh air ... And a new subscriber :)
Thank you so much.
Excellent video! Thank you. One question: How would you compare wide-angle photos taken with this lens to photos taken with the wide-angle function on the panorama mode?
If I wanted a sweeping view of the scene I'd definitely use the panorama function. I simply like the wide angle lens to get a slightly wider view for my hyperlapses or video waypoints.
@@OzLapserThank you so much for the prompt and helpful reply.
Have you had a chance to compare the Dji wide-angle lens with the Freewell wide-angle lens?
@@frankfountain7680 No, I don't own any other fiilters at this stage but maybe in the near future I'll give some a go.
Thank you for the review. Just a side note, How do you fly at night in Australia? I was under the impression it was definitely not allowed unless you abide by strict regulations. Just asking in case I have missed something in the regs?
Thanks from Czech!
You're wewlcome from Aus! :)
This is a great video. It appears to me that the wide angle lens barrels a bit. I am not a videographer so I don't know if the following observation is valid for videos. Post processing stills in good photo editor will easily fix that problem.
Thanks alot for your video
How about 360 Panorama with the wide angle does that work?
No Pano's don't work with the lens. When I was flying the app kept flagging that I had a wide angle lens attached and wouldn't allow me to do any type of panorama
Thanks for this video! quick question, have you used the wide angle lens in vertical mode? Does it really make a difference? I create content for social media and sometimes the 16:9 format is too narrow for whatever I am trying to record. This might be a good option.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it.
I haven't used vertical mode for video but I have used it to create horizontal panoramas where I manually rotate the drone 360 deg and take photos. You can see a quick glimpse at the end of this video.
From memory there was some slight distortion on the sides which you can lens correct in post or scale up the image so that they're not noticable.
But I'd say you'd still get a little more wider view of your subject compared to using the normal lens. Although the normal lens would be slightly sharper. But you could try increasing the sharpness in the DJI fly app prior to recording.
Give it a go. But yes, the wide angle lens would provide a wider field of view making the scene smaller or slightly compressed.
Thanks for the info. I will defo give it a go. Thank you very much 🙌🏼
Are you video shutter speeds higher or does the wide angle lens have a place for an nd filter?
Shutter speeds are higher. No placement to add another filter with it
I notice you're using reflectors on your drone, is that for birdstrike prevention and does it work?
Hi, yes. You got it in one. I had issues with a pair of local black crows that whenever I flew the drone in my back yard they would relentlessly swoop at the drone for the entire duration of the flight.
I saw a youtube video that mentioned reflector tape for this issue. So I gave it a go. I still occasionally have the crows swoop but they seem to only do the initial swoop then leave my drone alone.
So, either the reflective tape does work or the local crows have gotten bored. Either way it can't hurt.
Prior to adding the tape, I've never had the drone struck. But several times the waypoint flights have stopped because the swooping birds have triggered the obstacle avoidance system.
But I have noticed a difference since applying the reflective tape.
Great video, do they have a wide angle ND 32?
I’m not sure. I don’t think so but maybe 3rd party manufacturers such as Freewell may
Is it safe to say that the wide angle lens basically gives the same perspective as if you were farther away? At least that is what I'm seeing. It would seem that because a photographer using a DSLR is stationary a wide angle lens may have it's advantages but from the perspective of a drone you can simply reposition the drone (in most cases) by using more distance to achieve the same or similar result. Thoughts?
It is not the same, although in this case the difference must be difficult to distinguish.
Great comparison video !
The music was a bit repetitive 😅
Looks like the quality is "good enough"
My DJI wide angle lens for the Mini 4 Pro bends or distorts the horizon especially near top or bottom of frame. I didn't notice any of that in your shots.
I get a lot of horizon curving when I tilt the gimbal upwards. But not really noticeable if the camera is more or less level. Maybe every batch of wide angle lenses are slightly different due to the manufacturing process as well.
There are some aberrations on the wide and you do lose some resolution but i doubt people would actually notice or care unless they were pixel peeping. By the time the video gets through youtube's compression, wouldn't matter anymore.
Some barrel distortion at the edges but not the worst. Hard to get a perfectly rectilinear image especially with a cheap adaptor.
For $50, no brainer. Better to have when u need than not have. Nobody will be able to tell the difference.
@@DavidCheok Yes, I wouldn't pay over $100 for the lens as an example. You're right about the distortion as some buildings close to the edge of view are often slightly distortion. Which you can fix with lens correction when editing.
As you say with youtube's compression you tend to lose a lot of detail and with the original footage there didn't seem to be a large difference with detail. Having said that, without the Wide angle lens adapter the normal lens is noticeably clearer.
IMHO it's useless in open space shootings. If I have to shoot a big objekt thats close by in the foreground, I just increse the distance until it fits in the frame, rather than using a whide angle lens. For the background where that's not possible, I simple use the panorama function and stitch. In my oppinion the whide angle lens is only good for indoor shooting or when shooting between buildings aka confined space, where you can't increase the distance without chrashing into the building behind you.
Yes, Panorama's the way to go if you want to capture the majority of the scene in a photo. I like doing a lot of hyperlapses which can either be timed photos or 10 minutes of video sped up in post.
I find the lens wide angle lens useful when flying around the CBD or in the suburbs which can limit the range I can fly some times depending on the area.
If I was out in the country, I probably wouldn't use it unless I wanted to capture a long formation of clouds at sunset or something like that.
So personally I find the lens can be useful with single frame video or photo time lapse videos in some circumstance.
Although I recenlty found out that I should use Manual focus as Auto focus isn't always accurate when using the lens.
Is this a DJI lens? Thanks
Yes, this is DJI's wide Angle Lens for the Mini 4 Pro.
Wow, thanks a lot for this very detailed footage video. I will order one for my real estate photography. The downsides on Images are small and i hope to easily correct the bevel distortion in Lightroom.
Yes, it should be helpful with Real Estate Photography. As you mentioned, any distortion can be corrected with some edits. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it.
I just order one, it's was $ 61.99.. 🙈
it socks
Intro are so annoying. So noisy
I often IMMEDIATELY turn off vids like this with the totally annoying 'music'...but this topic was so essential and interesting to me, as I have just purchased a wide angle lens...
Why the silly AI voiceover?
It doesn't worth it
