Madagascar: Dicing With Death | Deadliest Journeys | Documentary

- In Madagascar, “rosewood” is at the heart of everyone's desire. For illegal loggers, the last trees in the country are the main source of their income; coveted trees are the last on earth. In Masoala, a villager leads a team of five lumberjacks, the “festy festy”, “les petits malins”. For 5 euros a day, they have to face the torrential rains, mud, mosquitoes and oppressive heat. They have to descend from the mountain a log of nearly 500 kilos for three days. A grueling journey. To transport “the rosewood” safely, these men risk their lives in the rapids. This is the most dangerous moment in transport. Before they can use canoes, carriers must pass the rapids with rafts. The logs are then sent to China. In Madagascar, poverty drives thousands of peasants to the south of the island, "Ilakaka", the largest deposit of sapphires in the world. For ten years, this Malagasy "Eldorado" has attracted students, the unemployed, taxi drivers, a whole population of underprivileged people who come to seek their fortune. As far as the eye can see, the ocher earth has been dug by hand , a multitude of manholes approximately 1 meter in diameter. Ilakaka, anyone can try their luck, all it takes is a shovel, a pickaxe and a lot of luck. To find precious stones, a miner goes blind down the well, digs, fills buckets that another man brings to the surface by a rope. All that remains is to pass this land through a sieve to hope to find the precious stone. It’s simple, but dangerous. Problems arise as soon as the shafts are a dozen meters deep and the miners decide to dig the galleries horizontally, without shoring. In this Gruyere that the region has become, collapses are very frequent and, regularly, minors do not come to the surface!

What a crazy episode. The things these people have to do for survival is unreal. And those mines were a nightmare. The cameraman and that toyota get some huge props from me.
Thumbs up for the camera man indeed , I think he was sensible enough to ask a miner to take a smartphone down in the mine.
Can we all just take a moment and thank the cameramen for their hard work and brave gesture. Wow i cant even imagine how tough was to film these footages.
No.
is it just one dude in sitting in passenger?
No, the trees need some thought though.
These type of comments we see in every next documentary.
Excellent documentaries, all of them. We are in our houses, with air conditioner and beers, watching the real world and the real people struggling with their enviroment to make a living.
Yeah
We ought to be ashamed of our houses because they are too stupid to build a bridge 🙄
I am so claustrophobic that I couldn’t even watch the mining section of the video, As soon as he started to go down the hole in the camera give a shot of the angle looking up I struggled with my own breathing and I just am just watching! I don’t know how you guys do it my prayers for anyone who goes down any small space.
once again a testament to the toughness of the Toyota Hilux and to the resilience of these people who make do with what little they have…no moaning or whinging and whining …just get on with it…and keep smiling..another great doco…keep em coming
These are some of the very best documentaries on YT. Really first class job. Very well done video and comments. 👌👌👌👌👌
Preach bro,you are correct
Indeed , I keep coming back to them , don't mind seeing them three times . There's so much to take in .
I love them, make some of us appreciate how lucky we are and never take things for granted
I enjoy the atse of humane fleshy
Come ans r8de with me brother
Toyota, sapphire, rosewood......a fabulous fusion. Videography , commentary and background score.....all are outstanding.
The daily struggle of the people here is beyond any comment. Still the innocent smile in their faces is just divine.
Deep respect for all of them from india. 🙏
👌👆❤️
That wood is beautiful, there are a few farms but the stuff they produce will never replace what was taken
I love this narrator so much
Me too! Me too!! Love how he takes on each character, makes it so amusing. 🥰
I'm a 45 year old Irishman this is a picture of my son have always loved this videos

Iv seen this documentary before but can't remember where but still love the uploads 👍👍
Always great to watch these Documentary
Worth watching..very informative.👍😀
I think the guy who narrates is great! I love how he says whats the people are saying instead of you having to read the words so quick, i wish more documentary vids do that.
The narrator is great! But they do make up some translations and say completely other things sometimes. But it's almost like it's that that makes these series so good, they just wing it. xD
I love these. I love thinking about the logistics and strategies needed to put in lasting improvements. It provides excellent thought workouts. And the infrastructural differences between my home and many other nations.
That 1999 Toyota Hilux engine gets completely submerged and ready to run again in a few hrs. That's impressive.
Ain't it....
To new Toyota... Is no match😔
Ever seen top gear?
He had to drain the engine oil though to check for contamination.
Oil+muddy water= brown marshmallow
Check out what Whistlin Diesel puts a Hilux through. Only a Helicopter drop could kill one!
What a wonderful place to travel to! The accomadations look splendid and exotic! Perhaps this will be my next vacation destination.
Bravo Upload..
Kaka Ubarikiwe..
Those miners are brave...no protective gears they only have lights and clobbers,I wish them all the best from South Africa 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
amazing love the documentary
Can we chat more on ig?

Special kudos to the camera men and crew for this amazing footage. Beyond that a special mention and thought to these men who have to make a living in such dangerous conditions. Its easy to speak about conservation if the government and environment meets the basic needs of its citizens.
Here its obviously not the case...
The local get use with such kind of life ,they are happy enjoying their ride ,watching from TANZANIA daresalam
"The government" is just people, its not some ethereal entity able to solve all problems and provide for everyone, especially if the underlying system is broken. "The environment" is the responsibility of all native people living in the area, they must all take care of their own soil. What these men are doing is destroying their homeland by exporting rare materials to other countries so some rich guy can buy a sapphire necklace or have a rosewood dining table. I wouldn't even dream of starting a family in such conditions, they say they're doing it to provide for their family so their kids can have a better life. What exactly is their kid going to do when they remain in poverty? The cycle will just continue, their homeland will continue to deteriorate as all resources are sold off until there is nothing left. What is the solution you may ask? It's both simple in explanation but complicated in execution. There are simply far too many people trying to survive off of too few resources. The choice is this, if you cannot even provide for yourself, why would you ever bring a child into the world who will only suffer alongside you?
Waaoh thanks ! That's a very nice documentary I enjoyed every bit of it especially where the narrator digs deep to translate even the ludicrous statements with the deep commandingvoice..I wish it was longer than that ..anyway thumbs up.
On the flipside it's sad to realize how poor the cuisine with little or no road infrastructure...just really makes one to app where they are in life.,without some challenges.
Mmh this is also where you get to see or rather experience the power and agility of a 4*4..waaoh
Like if you have enjoyed the Documentary let's make it go viral
Damn bloody good doc. You guys are the best.
HAVE RESPECT for TOYOTA it UNBELIEVABLE GOOD
That Toyota truck driver needs sponsorship from Toyota, itself, because in that country, the driver must be tough, but his vehicle must be tougher

Wow! What a documentary! I must admit that I found it hard to watch the part of the miners when they were underground.
This is a bery different life from where I live so it is fascinating to see.
Can we just give credit to the camera man...like how does he do that, wow
I missed your videos. Keep them coming
I enjoy watching these videos 👌
Surprisingly quite good docos, nice slow raw footage
Thank You, Beloved Father...
Love these.. plus the vehicles there can take a beating.
Those african documentaries are the best
I love how although these journeys are full of problems, they don't complain or seem frustrated by being inconvenienced. It's just a fact of life there, so everybody gets on with clearing the way and trying again. Interesting to compare that with western drivers who can get almost anywhere with ease and still express rage/despair at the mildest unexpected holdup. This is true resilience and a can-do attitude, they'd never get anything done otherwise.
Wow 😭 and we are in the USA complaining
Yes, USA is the problem
@@wallerstc Hes saying: people take living in such a great nation for granted. Why dont you focus on your shit hole country of India.
Great Documentary, absolutely love it! but I don't like the fact that you use different titles with the same footage.
Another toyota proving itself in another country in need of a product called asphalt..yota pride
Those old Toyota’s are bulletproof
The narrator's voice is legendary, like if you agree with me.
Great voice. Unfortunately they dont display his name at the end.
And I want to know his Name so that I can search on net. This man's voice is so legendary indeed but recently, I hear his voice no more in these documentaries by show me the world, free documentaries, best documentaries or deadliest journeys .
I have searched every where but cant find his name
You did not look very far. Actor Adrian Dunbar
No... its not Adrian Dunbar
I used to own a 1972 Toyota Hilux pickup like that so when I saw his I knew he would get to where he was going
THIS IS REALY INTERESTING DOCUMENTARY
thanks for your video
I hope this road can be repaired by the Congo government as soon as possible
I thought this would be boring. Now bingewatching

Em todos os vídeos com estradas ruins , a Toyota está presente, prova de que é um carro muito resistente
Waiting... It will be great if Voice over artist is same from "Deadliest journeys-Congo" video.
Yes brother
Name of this narrator/Voice over artist please ..
I want to know aslo
Agree with you bro✌🏻✌🏻
Just imagine if voice narrator is Morgan Freeman..
Rosewood is a prized wood in the stringed instrument industry. Some instruments especially acoustic guitars made from rosewood are 10,000 plus, US DOLLARS.
Waiting from Nigeria
I like the scene in the introduction where the small plane flies over the truck.

Beautiful madagascar
What's the name of the narrator? He's one of my favorite VO's ever. I like how he translates as well. He has a lot of character and cadence in his voice and doesn't sound like he's just reading a script.
Toyota,best pickup for 2020
That toyota can be everything. You can off road and on road. 👍
13.00: "It's not safe". Meanwhile in the background another 4WD safely crosses it.
Keep them coming in Black Thunder will always approve
That Toyota truck is the most impressive thing about this documentary.
Waiting from India
Okay keep waiting the rest of us will keep watching
The tree thing was amazing AF.
I need those Madagascar ancestors to come through there and wreck havoc on those people who my people slaving
*Around 3.000 rosewood trees are seized by the authorities every year...so I wonder what do they do with it...*
it will be out of the country one way or the other
I work for a big guitar company in California... we buy a ton of rosewood and I’m sure it’s not all legally exported.
@@theflanman1986 even most gibson's stock are unlikely legal
nutty nut I work for fender... we have a small contingent of Gibson at our facility but they only do about 20 guitars a day while we do 450. Some custom shop guitars cost more than 10,000 dollars. Mostly rosewood and ebony
That 99s Toyota's superiority made me to accept that old is definitely g(old). 🔥
I'll Never Complain About another Dang Thang...

Same MO as in Borneo, pillage until it's all gone, then make another plan. Why not save the forest and make another plan now.
When you have to choose between death due to poverty, and destruction of forest . 90% will choose destruction of forest
@@longlee1100 and what do they do once the forest has been destroyed? At this point the forest can still draw tourists etc. and offer residents an alternative way to make a living , nobody will come to a country reduced to a desert. Cutting down the forest is a narrow minded, short term 'solution'.
@@Visionery1 The higher ranking government in that country for sure couldn't in their wildest dream think of that solution. even if there is tourism, the question is the pay. to you on the internet, getting paid is enough to stop them from stealing wood. in reality though, it involves so much more. When you are poor (I was almost homeless once but thank god, my mom educate me good) , all you can think about is money to make your lives better, to save up money for when sht happens to you. While I agree that cutting forest is shortsighted, you have to pay attention to how much education is being offered to them by government....to get education to see the shortsightedness of cutting forest, you need education. to get education, you need money to pay tuition if government doesn't help you. to get money? you guess it, cutting down forest.
If you listened closely enough, you would know that the rose wood tree is like finding a needle in a haystack. The forest is not made up of rosewood. They are not eliminating the forest. By the way...... Is the house you are in right now as you posted your comment framed with wood???? ..... Yes I thought so.
@@todeotodeo140 no, you thought wrong, it's not, don't automatically make assumptions! It's concrete and brick throughout, I'm not in the US or Canada where timber is the norm. By the way, US and Canadian houses are built with commercially grown timber from managed plantations, forests are not cut down indiscriminately.
Once they take all the trees then what will they take next
I always thought that sapphires were "semi-precious".
Bloody hell.
Life-threatening.
That makes them precious...
Nope. Precious. I have one on my finger and I wonder where it came from, and how people likely struggled to get it. Sad.
good.
Good one
U ll never complain of anything in ur life after watching madagascar related videos
The poverty you mean ?
@@pietrojenkins6901 wat is shown in the video i was saying about dat

One serious question please...
Why do they populate like rabbits if they can't care/feed them kids ?
Good question i think
Pillaging their own survival basics for pennies is nuts!
As much empathy and sadness one can have for these men, it's a hard knocks life for the women who marry them. It's a re-cycle of ongoing frustrations, permanent danger and bitter hardships. If I were in such a situation, to change my position I would CALL ON JESUS WITH FERVENT FASTING AND PRAYER.
Or you can send them $ome aid or material goods.
Agree - Giving alone won't just help - how many times can any individual give. What they need is EDUCATION from their government to help themselves or from foundations who can make a huge difference and of course lead them to seeking a higher spiritual life in Christ...
@@pietrojenkins6901 You give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. You teach a man to fish, he will eat forever.
Holy shit when the tunnel almost caved in was terrifying
Are these men doing the actual chanting/singing, or is it just background music? They have good voices lol
Always interested in Madagascar after The Madagascar cartoon film...i thought there would be very few people and would be a lush green tropical jungle... Was dissapointed to know it rains there quite less often and already been vastly habituated by humans... I am from Pakistan tho
Those rapids look fun, Niagara Falls would be fun, someone should start a business
why oh why does humanity feel the need to keep populating when they can't feed the family they have??????
Can't afford condoms .
Plus the animal desire to have sex
Where can I watch the documentary about Central African Republic?
The ppl are sturdy and of steel bodied but have no sense of paving the tracks on self help basis. it seems everybody is in a kind of hurry and government is totally indifferent to ppls' plights. Feeling sorry for the ppl after watching this video.
God bless Toyota
Wow they're soooo lucky! They've got chocolate milk rivers!
Races why you say that?
They are torturing those chickens! So bad, so sad and so wrong!
The legal authorities that secures their resources must collaborate with each other to enforce law, in order not to elligaly exploit their natural and endangered species of trees, plus those roads must be fixed for an easy access of goods from farm to market, e.g. corn, bananas, pineapples or any farm crops profitable. There should be a better livelihood program that suits their community.
These folks are not the brightest bulbs in the forest.
They notice some poor people cutting down trees but they don't see the big illegal logging company and illegal mining
It’s is a shame seeing this decade years old massive jungle tree being chopped for the sake of a greedy multinational companies.
It had a good run
Again...a toyota hilux. Now that why it is the favourite vehicle here in Namibia.
Here i am in toronto complaining about pot holes while these guys barely have roads
At least u can put a claim in when your car gets damaged on a city road, these guys got no choice
seems to me 2 officers in a small boat searching boats going down river would stop this immediately
