On a solid/high DC build revolving around Illusion, Weird is the utter bomb at clearing rooms full of enemies or masses of enemies in open field. Absolute bomb! Also, Deskari can nearly be one-shot with Phantasmal killer given a high enough DC. Mithrals did it in two-shots in his solo playthrough of a DC sorc/wizard but he admitted that if his initial Phantasmal killer had not been saved against by Deskari, he could have done it in one-shot.
There is also a robe that adds +2 to the DC of the fortitude save, this is the robe of determination IIRC, which drops from one of the street fights in the abyss (the island across from the slave market, not far from the assimar quest guy) . Not sure if you took the demongraft as well from the arena. That gives another +2 DC. Possibly you did as the 4th level PK has DC 36, from 14 (base) + 10 caster stat (31 int ) + 4 feats + 6 items. Not sure where the other +2 is if it is not the demongraft.
I do love buff spells however, by the time you can buff the entire party they are usually already wearing belts/circlets that give them the same or better in terms of raw stats. Fortunately, Nenio is a wizard so there are no such things as 'wasted spells' while leveling up because she can just cannibalize the scrolls you find or buy to learn every wizard spell in the game. I did a playthrough similar to your build, except I was playing a nine-tailed kitsune Sorcerer to troll enemies with illusion, enchantment and necromantic fear.
Thanks for this. It helped a lot drawing attention to gear and other methods to increase spell DC, as the problem with hostile spells I was having was it felt like rolling with disadvantage to beat both spell resistance and whatever saves the enemies could make. Now with misfortune and some debuffs from enchantment I feel powerful in a way that isn't just beating mobs over the head with a greatclub.
While not really a fix for Nenio in particular, if you as a player character are wanting to do a build along these lines, Undead Bloodline Sorcerer is actually a better choice than Wizard, as it can use mind-affecting spells on undead due to its Bloodline Arcana. This should, in theory, allow you to use Phantamsal Killer and Weird against undead, which constitute a significant chunk of the enemies with immunity to Phantamsal Killer. Just something to consider.
Ok now I have more foundation for the build. I heard something about phant killer nenio being strong but I’m still figuring out my MC build so Ty for this
Evil eye from either Ember or Camellia is also a good way to drop down Save DCs, best part of it is that they take the peneality for 1 round even if they make the save. Oone of my common strats was to evil eye with Ember and PK with Nenio. Also evil eye + slumber combo works really well in the early game.
I just one-shooted Devarra at party lvl 11 during random encounter with this build. It rocks, so much so I am now affraid I have screw up my quest, since I didn't have Greybor with me and haven't visited Grimwood Forest yet :-(
This is almost exactly how I built her too! Except I put some feats into evocation and used chain lightning a lot too for those pesky enemies immune to mind affecting spells
I am using this build for my Nenio (core difficulty playthrough + AEON). Adding Nenio with this build to the team, it was a game changer. Superb frontline buff with displacement. Insane instant killing power and area control. I am basically using killer/putrefaction + higher/persistent versions. I was thinking to start the next playthrough as Azata with spellcaster as main character, focused on spell penetration and DC. What would you suggest? My idea is Gnome (Illusion DC), Exploiter Wizard (+2 DC or Spell Penetration as Arcane Exploit).
I tried to build something like this in my first playthrough. I was pretty close to it and just missed some of these important gear for the DC boost. Pretty fun.
My build for Nenio ending up pretty similar, picked up Expanded Arsenal: Enchantment for more crowd control (Mind Fog, Confusion, and Hold Monster/Person). Although, the spells dont seem to be as effective as my Illusion spells, so I am not sure if the Mythic feat is working as stated. Bolster meta magic for Magic Missiles, other than that focused on pretty much all the same things.
I wasn't aware of that build, I'm doing the same thing on a Dirge Bard. On one hand, Bards can only cast 6th level spells (-3 DC compared to a 9th level spell), but on the other hand Dirge Bard's Haunting Refrain gives it +2 up to +5 on the DC of Fear spells, which cancel out the fact that there is no Magician's Ring for Necromancy. I'm not sure if I can cast Weird from a scroll, but casting Dirge of Doom as a Swift Action for a guaranteed -2 on DC to Will saves for anyone in range, coupled with a Heightened, Persisted Fear as a 6th level spell is very strong, Indeed. With a plus that you can affect undead with it, from Secrets of the Grave. There is just one question: increasing the caster level doesn't change the DC, doesn't it? This means you don't need to get Spell Mastery, not Mythic School Mastery. I guess it counts for Spell Penetration. Great build and video, as always
I really love this kind of videos mainly because I want to understand how the game works as I'm pretty new to the dice roll games ... One thing I would hope you would keep in mind for future videos ... I'm still in very early game and I now get the idea that nenio will turn into a fox at some point ??? Kinda a spoiler maybe ?? I'm still very early game as I said so I don't know if it is
Its a prerty mild spoiler since its part of her first companion quest but you can also find out just by looking at her character sheet at any time. But yeah, she's a kitsune (like the creature from Japanese mythology) and can shapeshift into a human form at will. Her portrait changes depending on what form she's in so she can stay in human form if you prefer it over the fox
@@davidmaxwell4696 I know about the kitsune part since I advanced in the story since that but as a first time player it was a pretty big spoiler especially since that first prologue can take up to 10-14 hours in my case ... I feel like it's way longer than kingmakers prologue
Metamagic is a little bit strange. I accidentally created level 7 spells under 5 and 6, but can't delete them. Solution was, to not create one after another, but instead choose the original level 4 spell every time before creating a higher one. But can't delete the faulty ones
36 is a lot? I dont know about these preset difficulties because i've just set stuff manually (no enemy stat reduction, normal crits, etc), but 36 DC was nothing in my playthrough.
It is 36 for the lvl 4 version, which is not that great. The lvl 8 version would be with heighten and persistent, and be 38, and require rolling twice. For me the lvl 4 slots are filled with improved invisibility, and the lvl 5 slots with extended improved invisibility. The rolling twice is the real killer, and turns say a 11+ required to save (50% chance) into a 25% chance to succeed as you need to do it twice, and it gets worse from there.
My build for Nenio is: Not-On-My-Team. In this build I leave her on the bench and don't do her quest after beating the game once along with the majority of my companions except ember.
I saw something on reddit about being able to use the expanded arsenal mythic and then grabbing spell focus in all the NON-Illusion stuff and that stacking to be able to reach crazy high DCs for Nenio. But some people called it a bug, others didn't, and I have played WotR waaay too much lately to test it out myself. Might be interesting though.
It should be a bug as it is very silly otherwise. It works with the main character and a legends build, so you have 10 extra feats to spend on it, and you get spell focus/greater spell focus on every other school and have +14 to save DC because of that.
You did not mention her headgear, but I assume it was headband of intelligence. But that it was so obvious to D&D players, that you forgot to mention it.
I tried full scroll savant playthrough with Nenio was fun, tho i realized going all 20 levels is pointless no real gains after 10 so gonna try a 10/10 savant/loremaster build with her this time
Great build. I have a lot of trouble with Nenio standing around doing nothing during fights. She does all the pre-buffs and then phantasmal killer on the big guys, but in small trash fights she's using her crossbow a lot more than I'd like (even at high levels).
This is generally what all spell casters do in D&D. They are control and buffers, for the most part. They only see any action in the hardest battles, because spell casters get very few spells per day they can use. It's not like they have some kind of mana pool and can blast away all day long.
@@thinking-ape6483 Sure, but that still does not change the fact that you only get a handful of casts, and that the RNG makes the spells unreliable, so you may have to cast PK two or more times on the same mob.

Yes. Raising the caster level doesn't make the spell any harder to resist, it just makes your caster level higher, meaning you have a better chance to beat spell resistance checks. The warmage makes the actual number they have to beat higher, which is far more effective.

There’s no bloodline that increases DC of Phantasmal Killer or Weird (Negative Emotion, Fear). Fey gives +2 to Compulsion and Infernal gives +2 to Charm. Undead allows you to mind-affect undead creatures and Serpentine allows affecting animals, magical beasts and monstrous humanoids.
