I have used a Canon 1 Dx Mark II for all of my Macaw parrot family photos/videos since 2016. But after watching a video by Jan Wegener on the Canon R6 Mark II, I decided to rent one. Absolutely incredible focusing capabilities and produces amazing 4K video. I do not like the smaller body of the R5, R6, and others, but love the large body of the 1Dx series cameras. I ordered a Canon R3 a few days ago, and it will be delivered today! Thank you for this video and for reinforcing my decision to buy the R3! The new R1 will not have any improvements over the R3 for my photo/video use, so no need for me to buy the R1. The larger 1 Dx body size on the R1 would be better than the R3, but not enough to justify the larger price.
First video I’ve seen where the photographer understands the importance of eye control and how to use it! Very nice! I found the same thing to be true - it gets my focus point to where it needs to be quicker than any other method - subject tracking takes it from there! Nice job!
Sabine, having watched your review on the R3, I took the plunge and bought it. I just spent 2 hours watching this video and kept rewinding back as I sat with my R3 and was doing the same set up per your video. Having done a course with Janine a few years ago, you guys are my game changers. This camera is mind boggling and have to get used to the numerous features but hei, I have a 180 days trip through Africa coming up. Thanks so much for the review video and this one on the customisations and set up.
Thank you :) I just got my R3 last night and your video definitely helped especially in knowing how to use the Eye Control Focus
Individually these things make some sense but - right now - I'm blown away. It's a good thing you can back up your settings along the way. Actually, that was a genius move by the Canon engineers. Theoretically, you could even load different personalities onto this camera.
Sabine, Thank you - very helpful. I recently received my R3 after 12 years of 1Dmk3 shooting. It is quite a culture shock - but the capabilities of the camera are amazing.
I would love to buy your 1 DxMk3, my photography/video needs do not require an R3.
@@MacawAviculture its a 1d not a 1dx

@@davesouthwood1545 OK, thanks!
Great ideas for setup, especially the use of eye focus and the corresponding shortcut.
Thank you, this is extremely helpful and very well explained!
Thank you for doing this Sabine, I just purchased a 2nd hand R3 and your back button AF setups helped already make it easier to get amazing results!
We’ll done. I love your well thought out set up of the back buttons for focus.
This has been the best setup video I’ve seen, I wish I watched it when I had the R3 on loan from Canon a couple weeks ago. I did decide to buy one and it should be here next week so I’ll probably watch this again then.
Thank you Sabine , I have the 90D being a relative beginner so I can apply some of your settings to mine 🌿 very helpful thank you 😊
I have set the lens control ring to quickly adjust the exposure compensation up or down.
Sabine as an owner of an R5 and now an R3, the settings videos Janine and yourself have produced have been invaluable.- detailed, clear explanations as to the “whys” as well as the “how’s” , I wondered if you both still used the settings as you first did? In particular the AF and custom dial and button set ups?
Many thanks and Season’s Best to you both
Hi Sabine! Got my R3 on friday, and follow all your tips for setting the camera up. It worked perfectly! Thank you so very much for the help. Best video in settings ever! Have some plans to go to your area for photographing. Take care and thank you again.
Thanks Sabine for the explanation of this settings👌
This was a good, in-depth review of the R-3 menu system setup for wildlife. I was hesitant, due to the reviews that pointed out it’s sweet spot for sports photography, but not wildlife. Because I do both as an amateur, both are important.
Thank you!! Its so much help. I just upgraded from 1dx mark 1 into R3. 😅
Great to hear!
Very helpful. Many thanks.
Wow Sabine! That is an awesome camera for sure. I don't know if I will ever be in a position to enjoy something like that, but I do appreciate your sharing of information. You do a great job. Maybe one day I will be able to join you guys on safari.
You should!
Thank you Sabine, I received my R-3 last week. I am thrilled to have a go to site to help unravel this comprehensive, but complicated camera menu, especially auto focusing. I am trying to understand what I have learned from you so I can apply appropriate settings for sport photography. RBrian
Thank you for the helpful video. I have used your settings to get started. It would be very helpful if there was a quick reference sheet to refer to for the buttons and dials as I get used to all the settings while walking around.
Un gran trabajo, as resuelto muchas dudas que tenía, muchas gracias por crear contenido útil y de calidad.
Thank you very much, Sabine. I'm about to leave for Tanzania in a few days and your settings proved to be very helpful for the R3 I just got. I haven't tried the eye control AF yet, but certainly will do so. There are mixed reports of the reliability and usefullness in the field, though. Some say that it's difficult to keep the focus on a desired point because of the natural pupil movements unless you gaze at the object all the time . As said, I will have to try by myself. Thanks again for your great work and efforts ! Wolfgang
Great explanation and walkthrough of the menu and customise settings for wildlife. Not a r3 owner but in the near future hopefully a r7 owner which should have a lot in common with the r3. Thanks for this very comprehensive video.
Always excellent videos. Any video on say Nikon Z9?
Not yet! But we are busy chatting to the powers that be!
Thank you,,Very informative that help to understand the r3 better. Thank again.
Glad you liked it Mitch.
So it's just a suggestion, maybe someone will get some use out of it: I've set the control ring to adjust AF point selection and in stills mode have the movie record button to select Full or Crop mode. It's very handy to be able to get to 1.6x crop factor very quickly through this method if you want some extra reach. Bearing in mind that the R3 resolves better than the 30MP 5D IV, 1.6x crop mode is suprisingly good imo and retains all the benefits of the camera's AF systems.
Great video! I am still playing with my R3 setup, so thanks for some good ideas.
Glad to help!
loved this. i am new to this camera and don't have much experience; hopefully I can figure it out. I just went thru all your settings and I could only get it to focus a few times. not sure what I'm doing wrong. I photograph wildlife, especially birds. but my focus today was on a buck standing very still . only focused a few times?????
Can you share how you were able to broadcast the camera settings on the screen for us to see and how you were able to show what it looks like through the viewfinder? I need to teach my students like this. You've done a great job!
Also, Eye control is following my eye in various calibrations but it's not focusing wherever my eye looks. Follows, but stays out of focus. What am I missing?
Very informative, thank you Sabine. I don't have the R3, however, this was very helpful for my R6 setup that I just purchased.

@@PangolinWildlife Yes, Thank You. Also great information.
Great video 99% the same settings I use on the R6 for those options I have, thank you 🙏
No problem 👍
I got my R3 in last week, i found lot of settings, which is confusing at times. Sabina, Your video is excellent to start with, gives confidence. Later I will post my experience here. I have 2 questions, 1st - If I attach non RF lens with adaptor then tracking, eye control, Auto focus works with same accuracy? and 2nd question Which lens you recommend for wild life. Thanks for the video again
Good stuff. I tweaked my settings to be even more effiencent, efficint, efficient,ha there we go! Ha
I like how you are calm and confident. What is that like? Haha 😂
Funny stuff dude!
Super very nice 👌👌👌👌👌
Thank you Sabine, nice video.
Is there any reason you didn’t mention the “Info” selection for fine tuning the back buttons, which I think offers even greater flexibility. ie). When assigning AF-ON button then select “Info”.
Thanks
I think this becomes unnecessary with having the three back button setup and I do not feel I need to customize the bb further. But sure anyone can adjust things further with that option
NIce NIce vare good settings
Theres very little chance of me ever owning the R3 or any other mirrorless camera, but the video was extremely thorough. It appears Canon's designers follow the rule of to make it more expensive just add another button. However, as I have admitted in the past, I'm a sucker for a beautiful accent. Sabrina, you could post a video reading the local news articles and get viewers.
Easy now Guy...we might just ask her to do that to see.....
Any upcoming wildlife setting on the OM system OM-1 which seems like an excellent compact option for hiking
We are working on getting one to test. Stay subscribed!
Wow amazing camera Mam..I realy love it..Beautiful clicks..nice tutorial too 7:10 wow 7:55 beautiful..new feauctures in this camera is amazing..actually i love the autofuss method in view finder..i heard that when we move the eye it automaticaly focus on what we see thats right

@@PangolinWildlife oh thats nice
Great video 👌
Many thanks.
Great video!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Now we're talking!!
Plz put custom button for video recording in r3
HELP needed! Is CRAW lossless compressed or lossy compressed? Couldn't find any info about this in the Canon R3 manual.
Thank you …
Madam! please help me with my new Canon R3. I would like to know how to sperate the custome set up button, on the right hand side there are 4 custome, but I see like a pair in which once I set up two buttons for something the other pair will have the same set up. I don't like it, and I want to have 4 buttons set up differently. Please tell me how to do it. Thank you.
why u film 4k and post 1080?
Hi Sabine... Nice video and love the way you explain all about settings and results. Do you have any video about Canon 1DX MKII or 1DX MKIII? Thanks! PS: Subscribed and Notifications ON :)
Thank you!!!
Does canon r3 don’t have autofocus lock in tracking irrespective of any af method , like of Sony A1 mechanism
