Thank you for this video. I am from Gatlinburg in the Smokies and I'm practicing for a future thru hike. I found your videos while doing research. So far, yours have been some of the best. I need all the help I can get and appreciate the advice given on your hikes.
@@GuadalupePicasso No I haven't. On my practice hikes and trips camping with my kids, I've come to ther realization I'm terrified of the dark!😅 Especially being out in the woods at night even though I was raised there. Im just a big chicken! Too many scary movies.
I have watched all of your videos, and used a good bit of the info to lighten. Pretty stoked. My 13 year old son and I are leaving for our thru in six days. Good luck on the PCT.
That was a nice trek through Georgia. I have only been to Atlanta so this was nice to see what else the state has to offer. Thanks for sharing ! I've subscribed.

I've never hiked the AT, but your videos epitomize the type of experience I am looking for. Light weight and everything planned out very thoughtfully. Thanks again man!
The way you filmed this gives it an almost RPG like feel haha not just because of the first person but because of everyone's stances and displays of character as your recording as well as the buildings in the area. I was half expecting there to be a variety of mythical beasts you'd have to team up and slay in order to survive the journey. But thankfully everyone gets to keep their head in this day an age and adventure in a relatively peaceful world.
Love the videos. I just got back from sectioning the first 40 miles to Neel Gap in a few days. It's so different in the summer than your late winter videos. Cool, to see the difference and I appreciate your logging the videos to give me some tips.

I feel Toast's pain (literally). I recently did 9 miles on the AT near Hot Springs. It was my first time ever with a backpack (26 lbs), and I am trying to get used to carrying one before setting out on weekend & weeklong hikes. The last 2 miles of downhill were brutal on the knees. Have been doing leg exercises to try to strengthen my muscles around the knee, and I am also considering a brace such as the cho-pat.
Great Information... myself and 3 others are heading to Ga in a few weeks and this sure helped out. One thing I have not found yet is the terrain, like mostly leaves or sharp rocks, slippery rocks?? Check out the elevation changes from the trail conservancy or the AWOL guide and see what you're comfortable with. I also recommend the Bartram trail. It's also in GA and the first section is relatively flat.
Red Beard, I am starting the trail solo May 9th, everything that I look at bases the weather on a start in March, I wanted to avoid the crowds! Any idea what to expect weather wise?
Your favorite camping spot since high school, how many tent sites would there be? Taking 4 student and 3 staff, 5 tents from Teen Challenge in June. Starting at Springer and going to Albert. Thanks
Hey Red Beard, Thanks for this video. A group of us are planning a short run from Neels Gap to Amicalola Falls State Park at the end of May. Have you any advice or experience on that southbound?
Don't have any experience on that section southbound. Climb out of Neels gap to Blood will be the hardest climb on that section i think. Good luck on your hike! Wonderful section for sure!
Will Wood Thanks for the reply. I really admire your courage to go off the beaten path, both figuaratively and literally. I read in another post that you abandoned corporate life and are pursuing your passion. You are the man!
Thanks for posting and sharing your experience and knowledge. I am section hiking for 21 days starting at Amicalola Falls State Park and getting as far as I get. - Hopefully at least to Franklin but we shall see. Anyway, I have a couple of questions - first, I have read and seen where it is best to cook meals 100-200 feet from your shelter and it is best to hang a bear sack 100 feet or more from your shelter. Is that right? Is there a better way?
almost every shelter had a designated area where you can hang your food bag. it's a steel wire and pulley system. It definitely deters bears, but mice still tend to sneak through sometimes
Hi! Love your channel! I'm planning a Georgia section hike and starting in NC and going south... what is the best and closest place to have my ride drop me off by the GA/NC line?? I only have 7 days to do the section in so I'd like to cut out as many unnecessary miles as possible lol... thank you for any advice and help u offer!!
What is the greatest resource for hiking the Trail? I am 14 now and hike the trail quite often in the most difficult sections in CT/MASS and want to start planning. I need to figure out how you guys get food, what gear you bring ect. It would be amazing if you could help me out. Thank You!!!
hi Redbeard! I enjoy watching all your shows and see you're experienced. any recommendations for a beginner who wants to hike a few days in March? I don't think I want anything too steep, too cold, or too deserty.
Beth Ratkewicz well I guess it depends on where you are located honestly. Any hikes on the AT no matter what state are great. In Georgia I would recommend climbing up to Blood Mountain or doing the section from Springer Mt to Neels Gap. 👍🏼
Beth Ratkewicz yeah not a problem. Just make sure and check the weather and pack warm clothes regardless of what it says. It's always much colder up over 3,000-4,000'.
Will Wood thanks! I really value your opinion! are those good places for beginning hikers to start with too? btw LOVE your videos and the information you give!
How's it going Red Beard? Can you provide a gear review or comments on the Brooks Cascadia 10 shoes please? I know you loved the 9's , but there all gone now. I'm a AT section hiker from Panama City , Florida. Thanks and, hike on my friend...
I have never work the 10's because of the serious defect. Do not purchase the shoes. After 100 miles of use a dime size hole will appear on the inside near the toe box. Within 200 miles it will be a quarter size hole. Check out the shoes I am transitioning to Altra trail runners.
Thanks for quick response and advice: I almost bought a pair. Let us all know which particular Altra trail runners you'll be trying, as well as, if it has a narrow or wide toe box. I have wide feet (EEE), which limits many shoes I can wear. I usually buy shoes 1 1/2 bigger than my size to overcome. I'm currently trying the Hoka one one challenger ATR.
Hey Will I have a few questions you may be able to help me with about the Springer Mt to Ga/NC boarder. I will be walking it next month as my first section of the trail. Just to see if I can actually do it. I have a friend going and we are wondering about parking cars in these two ares. Have you heard of any one being able to do that? Parking them would allow us to take each other back and forth at the beginning and the end of the hike. Thanks for taking time to read Cliff
+Cliff F yes you can definitely park at springer mountain parking lot and at the border. However I'm not sure exactly where he closest road would be to the border crossing. You might have to do some investigating on that one.
I added up the miles from all 14 states that they have listed on their website and keep getting 1994 miles. Where are these other 200 miles coming from? Could they really be that far off with their mileage on the site?
Would you say the Georgia/North Carolina section is doable for novice hikers? I've heard it's pretty moderate terrain, but I'd appreciate any additional insight.
I would definitely say georgia North Carolina section is doable for a novice hiker. There are a ton of ups and downs so make sure your pack weight is light. The reason it's a bit easier is because it's not that Rocky or rooty. Purchase the AWOL Appalachian Trail Guide if you haven't yet. It will help big time! Happy Hiking!
No problems in freezing conditions. I slept with the filter in my sleeping bag when it was freezing. Check out my full review. m.ua-cam.com/video/-zs3re8mXn8/v-deo.html
What is a good under $100 camera to take recordings with ? I was looking at the Ematic EVH528BL. It is what I can afford. Vivitar seems to have some nice ones about that price to.
Hey Read Beard, thanks for this video! Quick question, did you record this with a GoPro, and if you did, what mount did you use? Also, did you (assuming not) use the wind shield foam accessory? Anyway, I'm looking at my camera options, so I appreciate any info you can share! Thanks again for the great video!
I do not use go pros. Sony action cameras are better. Sony HDR-AS100V is the one I use. I only use the stickpic. Google it. The rest of the shots I shoot just holding the camera. The stability is incredible
+Will “Red Beard” Wood omg, excellent quick reply! Thank you so much! I work at REI, and since we focus on the GoPros, sorry for assuming. I'm so impressed with your shots, I'll definitely look into your set up. I love LOVE your video. Thanks so much!
So you're in Georgia in March. what temp would you say is cold? I live up north and I just wondering what temps you guys are dealing with around that time of year.
Hey thanks for the cool video I subscribed ! Question ! How is the trail terrain ? Like for instance. I hiked Mt. Marcy its only 14.5 miles, but it took me a good 8 hours ! Im trying to find out if 15 miles a day on the Appalachian is about average or just taking your time. If its anything like Marcy, I dont know if I can do 15 mile 8 hour days I would be dead in a week!! So Im just asking because a lot of people say 15 miles + a day just want to know how many hours of actually walking that would take. I hope that made sense lol I hope to hear from you soon ! -Peace
You made a comment that you did not like Oboz footwear ! Any particular reason? I looking to begin a thru hike when I retire and am looking for foot what now to wear now for hiking to see what works for me. Thanks.
Hej Will, How did you manage the power supply for your camera and which one would be the best for? No one would believe me that I've done the trail if he won't see me doing it. Hope to do it in 2 years when I'm 62. With hearty greetings from Berlin Uli
Hi Red Beard. Thank you for the videos. I'm planning a first section hike from Springer Mt. to Neels Gap. I only have a couple days off (hope I can make the whole way over many years). Question: It seems it took you four days to make this trek. I may have read that wrong. Forgive me if so. Anyway, according to the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, this is 30.5 miles. I know you hiked strong, but why did it take so long? Yes, there are mountains I know. I'm in good shape and thinking I'd make 15 miles a day. That may be unrealistic. But certainly I can do 10 a day, no? I know you are not able to respond to all the messages so I put the question out there to other experienced ATers who are reading this.
Charles Boisseau We started at the start of the approach trail. That adds 8.8 miles to the 31.7 to Neels Gap. We did 11.6, 13, 8.5, 7.4 on each day. My hiking buddy had knee problems and it was the start of a 2,000 mile thru so most hikers start off at 8-14 miles per day. Lots of ups and downs but you shouldn't have a problem doing 15 a day. Cheers
Andrey Mejia bring lots of warm clothing and a good sleeping bag and you should be good to go. I always recommend not rushing out of the gate. For the first week or two just do nice slow stead days don’t over do it. Then you can pick it up after that. Good luck. 👍
@@RedBeard0924 thank you for the tip i been following you and seen alot of your videos you give good advice and very helpful tips on hiking .. thanks again
Im doing a thru-hike this march and im wondering what you did with your food at night throughout he trail as far as bears are concerned. Some say i need to hang my food, some sleep with their food but overall i cant find a concise answer. What did you do? Im leaning towards hanging my food every night but looking for a second opinion
I hung my food the first 2 nights and then never again. Occasionally if I camped near a shelter in a national park I would use their food storage boxes or hangers. I just keep my food in the vestibule of my tent. I have scent free food since everything is packaged so I never had issues. Not even with mice.
Sweet, thanks. Im using a hammock so i may need to end up hanging it for lack of space or maybe ill just take my food sack in with me. Thanks for the advice.

I mean reccomendations for destinations
Beth Ratkewicz well I guess it depends on where you are located honestly. Any hikes on the AT no matter what state are great. In Georgia I would recommend climbing up to Blood Mountain or doing the section from Springer Mt to Neels Gap. 👍🏼
Will Wood even in March it is ok?
Beth Ratkewicz yeah not a problem. Just make sure and check the weather and pack warm clothes regardless of what it says. It's always much colder up over 3,000-4,000'.
Will Wood thanks! I really value your opinion! are those good places for beginning hikers to start with too?
btw LOVE your videos and the information you give!
This is inspiring and cool, I'm so jealous.
It only gets better. Find your adventure. Happy hiking ✌🏼️
Willlllll, just wondering what camera and what app you used to edit your videos for your blog while on trail?
where is a good spot to stay between low gap shelter and neels gap? not really wanting to add and extra 2 miles to get to Whitley shelter...
Curious to know how many days it took from Amicalola to NC Line? Planning a trip one day. Thanks.
You can do it in a week or less. I took a zero day due to my friends knee issues.
Dude that was a killer video thank you. I'm gonna finish watching the rest.
+Will “Red Beard” Wood... I don't know if toast ever got to the finish line in Maine. but I hope he doing ok.
This video is really useful! Im planning to do Georgia at in august! (i know it will be steamy and hot)
Hi Red beard planning on moving back home soon to Georgia would you guide me through Ga too North Carolina
Thanks for taking time to read
Cliff
+Cliff F yes you can definitely park at springer mountain parking lot and at the border. However I'm not sure exactly where he closest road would be to the border crossing. You might have to do some investigating on that one.
Great video and info, thanks! What day of what month did you start in GA?
March 1st
The fire towers you encountered along the A.T, can you sleep in them overnight?
Really enjoyed watching
Noticed you were using a Sawyer squeeze. Did that work for you? Any problems in freezing conditions?
No problems in freezing conditions. I slept with the filter in my sleeping bag when it was freezing. Check out my full review.

Best one I have seen
What is a good under $100 camera to take recordings with ? I was looking at the Ematic EVH528BL. It is what I can afford. Vivitar seems to have some nice ones about that price to.
Did you start your mileage count at springer or did you account for the 8.5 to start at springer?
Good call, thats longer than the trip through to Springer.
Thanks so much!
.
Hi! Along the AT, how frequently have you seen someone make a campfire at a shelter? Say 50% roughly or less?
What is the name of the black 1/4 zip hooded jacket you're wearing in the 2014 AT videos? Thanks!
So you're in Georgia in March. what temp would you say is cold? I live up north and I just wondering what temps you guys are dealing with around that time of year.
In the mountains 40s to 50s during the day. 20s-mid 30s at night. Obviously it can get colder and sometimes warmer.
-Peace
15 miles a day would be tough every day in Georgia terrain. No way is it "taking your time"
You made a comment that you did not like Oboz footwear ! Any particular reason? I looking to begin a thru hike when I retire and am looking for foot what now to wear now for hiking to see what works for me. Thanks.
Hej Will,
How did you manage the power supply for your camera and which one would be the best for? No one would believe me that I've done the trail if he won't see me doing it. Hope to do it in 2 years when I'm 62.
With hearty greetings from Berlin
Uli

At the beginning of the AT is there places to get water from Springer to Blood mountain.?
Cheers
Looks like you are wearing Brooks Trail Runners? That is what I use, any issues with them?
Any advice I'm doing halfway starting in Pennsylvania working my way down to Georgia i start oct 13 and make my journey to the south
I want to do this but, how did you get so long off from work?! Awesome job. how did you work out a ride home after you finished the trail?
Usually people do this between big changes in their lives, for example between careers, between college and starting your career life, etc.
Thanks for the vids....what Maps or Books would you recommend for sectional hiking the Georgia trail???
can you camp "wild" at the amicalola falls state park before starting hiking the at?
Do you think it's possible to hike the approach trail and back to Amicalola Falls in one day?
Noah Lipsky absolutely..
How much did this adventure cost, in terms of equipment, transportation to the apps, and food? Did you have to re-stock on food anytime?
LOL. no, he carried 6 months worth of food supplies in his bag
Hang your food. A guy got attacked a few months ago because he had food in his tent. It take
Yup, i totally did when i was on the trail. Although i never even saw a bear in my 2.5 months on the trail.
