Imagine though, you’re in the apocalypse with whole group of people, at least 50 or 60 people. You come across a small group of intruders. You have them completely surrounded, and everyone in your group is armed with some sort of weapon. From your point of view, there is absolutely no way the other group could get out of this. Then all of sudden, one of them just starts smiling. Ear to ear, like a kid. That would honestly be horrifying, a dozen different things would across your mind about why this man is smiling and what exactly he has up his sleeve.
That's not fear, that's reigning yourself in. I'm not say he didn't fear him, but you're overselling it. And I think he didn't fear Negan as much as he feared what he'd do to his people
